Free Family Entertainment in July – Summer of Theatre at Saddleback College – Starts This Friday!

The Department of Theatre Arts is thrilled to bring live performances to Saddleback College outside on the upper campus quad in July.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Audience members of all ages will enjoy summer evenings under the stars with an ogre singing in concert, a 100-year-young crooner singing with the big band, a Scottish general and a Shrew doing Shakespeare, and 76 trombones leading a big parade.

 

Festival seating begins at 5:30 p.m. All performances start at 7:30 p.m. The setting is perfect for picnicking or food is available from a variety of food trucks. For those who don’t wish to bring a blanket or sit on beach chairs, reserved seating is available at $20 per person (presale only). On Friday and Saturday, July 7th and 8th, Shrek the Musical, Book and Lyrics by David Lindsay-Abaire; Music by Jeanine Tesori, and originally produced on Broadway by DreamWorks Theatricals and Neal Street Productions, will grace the outdoor stage in all its green glory. Directed by David Anthony, this musical about a beloved hulking green ogre is in concert version with a full orchestra and cast of characters.

 

On Friday, July 14th, the Saddleback Big Band, under the direction of Joey Sellers, will be joined once again by 100-year-young Shep Shepherd. Last summer, at 99, Shep entertained the crowd with a CD release party featuring popular standards.

 

On Saturday, July 15th and Sunday, July 16th, The City of Mission Viejo presents Shakespeare by the Sea’s productions. On July 15th, Macbeth and his Lady embark on an ambitious quest to win the Scottish Throne. On July 16th, The Taming of the Shrew is a story about rebellious Katherina who stands in the way of her younger sister’s marriage and Petruchio who is enlisted to “tame” the elder daughter.

On Friday and Saturday, July 21st and 22nd, enjoy a summer night under the stars to the fully-staged production of Meredith Willson’s The Music Man, Book, Music and Lyrics by Meredith Willson, and story by Meredith Willson and Franklin Lacey. Directed by Natalie Baldwin, the story features a fast-talking traveling salesman who cons the citizens of River City into paying him to create a boys’ marching band, but his scheme flops when he falls for Marian the Librarian.

 

Location: The Saddleback College Upper Campus Quad (in front of the Administrative & Governance Building‐AGB), located at 28000 Marguerite Parkway, Mission Viejo, CA 92692. Parking is free for this event in Parking Lots 9 & 10. Festival Seating begins at 5:30 p.m. on a first‐come, first‐serve basis. Local food trucks will be available, as well as other vendors providing drinks. Attendees can bring picnic meals for these performances. Show Time: 7:30PM – Includes Welcome and Show.
