Aliso Viejo pays homage to volunteers

Date:

Ray De Leon volunteers because he likes servicing the community and practicing his skills as a photographer.  Young Travis Mooney volunteers because he wants to have fun while helping the community. For the retired Jim Burge, volunteering is all about “meeting very interesting people.” Whatever their personal reason, Aliso Viejo’s volunteers are the lifeblood of this community.

On Tuesday, the city of Aliso Viejo recognized about 70 volunteers who donate their time and energy to making this community great during its annual Volunteer Appreciation Dinner at the Aliso Viejo Conference Center.

Mayor Bill Phillips, Mayor Pro Tem Mike Munzing, Council Members Ross Chun and Dave Harrington and City Manager Dave Doyle were on hand for the festivities that included a delectable dinner, dessert and certificate and coffee thermos for the volunteers.

“You spend a tremendous amount of hours volunteering and you are doing this for free, but it really takes all of us to make this place spectacular,” Phillips told the crowd. “I cannot thank you enough for all that you do.”

Some of the volunteers help out during the city’s annual Snow Fest, Founder’s Day Fair and Community Cup. Others help paint and maintain the Aliso Viejo Family Resource Center or serve as a member of the Police Assistance Liaison Services (PALS). Some volunteer at the Aliso Viejo Boys & Girls Club. Brian Chichi makes things for the club like the reception front desk.

“Whatever they need, I like to make and donate,” he said.

No matter what their roles, all Aliso Viejo volunteers make a difference to this community.

“We are such a small city and we really could not do what we do without all of you, so thank you for your tremendous contributions,” said Community Services Director Karen Crocker.
