CAPISTRANO VALLEY HS STUDENT SELECTED TO ADVISE TRUSTEES

Leilah Rodriguez Named Student Adviser to Capistrano Unified Board

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO—Capistrano Valley High School senior Leilah Rodriguez, founder of the Hand in Hand club, which helps children with social disabilities transition from middle school to high school, has been selected to serve as Student Adviser to the Capistrano Unified School District Board of Trustees for the 2013-2014 school year.

Rodriguez will be a voice and advocate for the District’s 50,000 students during twice monthly meetings of the Board of Trustees. She succeeds Capistrano Valley High School graduate Madison Wolfert.

Along with being the founder of Hand in Hand, Rodriguez is captain of the girls’ golf team, and a member of the National Honor Society, Club Namaste, and Colors of the Middle East Club. She has been a Girls Scout for 12 years and holds a leadership position in Model United Nations. Rodriguez is also a candidate for a full International Baccalaureate Diploma and has earned a 4.5 weighted grade point average. In addition, Rodriguez is active in her church, serving as president of her local youth group and is active in regional youth affairs.

The Student Adviser serves a one-year term and attends all meetings of the Board except for closed sessions. She may cast an advisory vote on all matters except those subject to closed session discussion. The vote is recorded in the minutes but does not affect the outcome of a vote.

COMMUNITY EVENTS

The Community Liaison for Hidden Hills Elementary school in Laguna Niguel is searching for high school students who may want to tutor students at Hidden Hills.  Tutoring is normally scheduled on Thursdays from 1-2 pm, or the tutor can meet the student at a library any day of the week from 2:30 – 3:30.  The plan is to start the tutoring program in November. If anyone is interested, they can contact Gabi Boulgarides by e-mail, glboulgarides@capousd.org or by calling (949) 495-0050 ext. 2205.  This does require a commitment as the tutoring will run until the end of May 2014.

The “Text After Driving” walkathon is an effort to raise public awareness about the dangers of texting and driving to help keep our teens safe on the road. The walkathon around Lake Mission Viejo is open to all teens (ages 12-18) and adults, and will be held on Saturday, September 28, 2013. Walkers will begin their 3-mile trek around the lake at 9:00 a.m. from Vista Del Lago on Marguerite Parkway in Mission Viejo. Balloons and signs to carry will be provided. The walk will end at the same location by 10:30 a.m. ALL walkers must submit their own registration form and donation.  Contact – Lori Kelman LoriKelman@aol.com 949-633-5303    ETC HELPS, 23261 Via Ronda, Mission Viejo, CA 92691
