Volunteers Help Bring Award-Winning Elks U.S.A. Float to Life at the 2026 Rose Parade

0

By Jenny Buford

The beauty and brilliance of the Elks U.S.A. float at the 2026 Rose Parade began weeks before New Year’s Day, inside the iconic Pasadena float barns, where dedication, patience, and teamwork transformed natural elements into a true work of art.

In the days leading up to the parade, 23 friends and family members from the Mission Viejo–Saddleback Valley Elks Lodge #2444 proudly volunteered their time to help decorate the Elks U.S.A. float. Their hands-on work began with the most intricate stages of float construction—carefully gluing seeds, beans, leaves, bark, and other organic materials—before advancing to the final and most anticipated phase: the placement of thousands of fresh flowers, each chosen and positioned to create balance, depth, and harmony.

As the float took shape, volunteers worked long hours alongside fellow Elks from across the country, sharing laughter, stories, and a shared sense of purpose. The result was a stunning visual tribute titled “Elks Care, Elks Share,” reflecting the organization’s enduring commitment to charity, community, and service.

When the float made its way down Colorado Boulevard on New Year’s Day, it captured the attention of spectators and judges alike. The Elks U.S.A. float was honored with the Isabella Coleman Award, recognizing the “most outstanding presentation of color and color harmony through floral design.” The award is one of the Rose Parade’s most prestigious honors, celebrating exceptional artistry, thoughtful design, and flawless execution.

Rose Parade Fun Facts

  • The Rose Parade dates back to 1890, making it one of the oldest and most celebrated parades in the nation.
  • Every float must be fully covered with natural, organic materials—no artificial flowers permitted.
  • Many floats use tens of thousands of flowers, often placed just hours before the parade to ensure peak freshness.
  • Volunteers contribute thousands of hours each year to bring these masterpieces to life.

A Tradition of Service and Pride

The Elks have a long-standing tradition of participating in the Rose Parade, using the national stage to highlight values of charity, patriotism, and community involvement. For the Mission Viejo–Saddleback Valley Elks Lodge #2444, participation in the 2026 Rose Parade was more than a volunteer opportunity—it was a proud moment of service, creativity, and unity.

From gluing seeds to placing the final rose, the experience embodied the spirit behind the award-winning theme: Elks Care, Elks Share.

Elks Lodge #2444 Celebrates 20 Years of Giving Dictionaries to Local Students

0

The Mission Viejo–Saddleback Valley Elks Lodge #2444 proudly announces the completion of its annual Dictionary Project, marking 20 consecutive years of providing dictionaries to local third-grade students.

Since the program began, the Lodge has distributed more than 90,000 dictionaries to students in the Saddleback and Capistrano Unified School Districts. This year, once again, every third grader and their teachers in both districts received a dictionary—continuing a nationwide Elks charitable initiative that the Mission Viejo lodge has supported annually.

Over the years, the impact of the program has reached far beyond the classroom. Former third-grade recipients have written back to the Lodge to share how their Elks dictionaries became valuable learning tools as they advanced through school—some even carrying them into their college years. Today, several local elementary school teachers proudly tell their students that they, too, once received an Elks dictionary as third graders.

This year’s project was made possible by a dedicated group of volunteers who gathered to stamp, rebox, and prepare the dictionaries for delivery. Special thanks go to Gene and Tracee McRane, Margaret Moore, Debbie Woog, Larry Colgan, Pam Simpson, Debby Lamb, Jack and Sandy Jacob, Alan Harkness, Carolyn Kruebbe, Lori Cincotta, Gerard and Jane Doherty, Sandie McClure, Bryan and Pam Takamiya, Sheryn Howlett, and Jenny Buford.

Additional appreciation is extended to those who loaded boxes into their vehicles and delivered dictionaries directly to the schools: Tracee McRane, Carolyn Kruebbe, Sandie McClure, Michelle Scaglione, Dinah Grosch, Diane Cannon, and Lynette Holmes.

“With so many hands on deck, we were able to complete the project quickly and efficiently,” said Lynette Holmes, Dictionary Chair. “I sincerely thank everyone who helped make this year’s dictionary project such a meaningful success.”

It is one of 8 lodges in the Orange Coast District of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks (BPOE) whose headquarters is in Chicago, Illinois. The BPOE is a charitable organization with a 157-year history of giving.  For information regarding Elks programs or Elks membership, call 949 830-3557

Laguna Art Museum Presents Silence and Solitude: Conrad Buff and The Landscapes of the American Southwest

On View September 20, 2025 – January 25, 2026

Laguna Art Museum is pleased to present Silence and Solitude: Conrad Buff and The Landscapes of the American Southwest, on view from September 20, 2025, through January 25, 2026. This landmark exhibition, curated by Dr. Deborah Solon marks the first major museum retrospective dedicated to the life and work of Conrad Buff, a modernist pioneer whose depictions of the American Southwest helped shape the visual language of twentieth century California art.

The exhibition is accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue and an in-depth curatorial essay which offers a comprehensive look at Buff’s artistic evolution and enduring legacy. “Conrad Buff’s work invites us to reconsider how the American landscape has been interpreted through modernist eyes,” said Dr. Solon, curator of the exhibition. “This exhibition not only celebrates his legacy but also deepens our understanding of how he shaped a distinctive vision of the West.”

By the 1930s, Conrad Buff was widely regarded as one of the most significant artists working in Southern California. Though rooted in modernist traditions, Buff’s work resisted the extremes of Surrealism or non-objective painting. Instead, he remained devoted to the landscape, particularly the rugged terrains of Arizona, California and Utah, where he discovered profound inspiration in remote, untamed environments.

Buff’s talent ranged across media from easel and mural painting to lithography to book illustration. Buff’s artistic output was prolific and he was nationally recognized. His early technique, marked by a cross-hatched Divisionist style, gradually gave way to a more architectonic, reductive approach by the 1960s. While his subject matter remained consistent, his stylistic progression revealed a deepening exploration of form, structure and color.

Buff’s large-scale canvases echo the vastness of the places he painted, transporting viewers into the quiet, expansive beauty of the Southwest. “At Laguna Art Museum, we are committed to exploring the full breadth of California’s artistic heritage,” said Julie Perlin Lee, Executive Director of Laguna Art Museum. “Conrad Buff’s work expands that narrative, bridging regional identity, modernist technique and a lifelong devotion to the natural world.”
