City of Mission Viejo – News and Upcoming Events Summer 2016

Pokemon community huntIn response to last week’s successful “Pokémon Go Community Hunt,” the Mission Viejo Library is hosting a second hunt on Thursday, July 21 for Pokémon enthusiasts of all ages.

This free event is from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and begins at the library at 100 Civic Center. Participants will head to the Oso Creek Trail for Pokéstops and to catch some wild Pokémon. The evening ends at the library where folks can pit their newly acquired monsters for supremacy over the library’s Pokémon Gym.

Participants must have Pokémon Go installed and accounts created on their Apple or Android devices. Trainers must be at level 5 to participate in Gym battles.  To take part in the hunt, people must sign a waiver and should bring water along with comfortable walking shoes. Minors must be accompanied by an adult.

National Night out resizeMission Viejo will join thousands of communities nationwide for the annual National Night Out crime and drug prevention event on Tuesday, August 2.

In celebration of this safe city, Mission Viejo Police Services is hosting an interactive community safety fair from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Target parking lot at 25601 Jeronimo Road.

National Night Out is a community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make our neighborhoods safer, better places to live. The event will offer residents timely and important safety information along with fun activities for kids. Free hot dogs will be available while supplies last and DJ – “The Mad Platter” – will keep the event pumping with music.

barbecue steakGrab your tickets, sport your favorite cowboy boots and get ready to kick up your heels this Sunday during the Boots, Beer & Barbecue dinner.

Hosted by the Mission Viejo Marines and Sailors Adoption Committee, the event is Sat. July, 23, 2016 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Norman P. Murray Community and Senior Center at 24932 Veterans Way.

Guests will enjoy a delectable barbecue buffet by Outback Steakhouse, music and camaraderie. They can also enjoy or learn line dances like the “2 Step”; Cowboy Up”; and “Sun Daze” with popular dance instructor Carrie WoJo. She will be joined by disc jockey extraordinaire Roy Southerland – dubbed “The Karaoke King” – pumping out the tunes.

Tickets are still available at the Norman P. Murray Community and Senior Center for $25.  This fundraising event supports year-round programs for the City’s adopted Headquarters Battalion of the First Marine Division from Camp Pendleton.

Camp Out cute famIf you want to savor the great Mission Viejo outdoors while giving back to the community, then consider volunteering during this year’s Camp Out at Beebe Park August 6-7.

The sold-out event begins at 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 6 and ends the next day at 10 a.m.

Volunteers, who must be at least 15, are sought to help in different roles during 4-hour spans.

Mark your calendar for Saturday, July 30 when the Pacific Symphony returns to Mission Viejo’s Oso Viejo Park for an evening of fun and music under the stars.

Symphony in the Cities is a free concert featuring the talented Maestro Carl St.Clair and the Pacific Symphony. The summertime celebration begins at 4 p.m. with the Prelude in the Park – featuring a special nod to Broadway. This family-friendly event will boast a cornucopia of activities including face painting, airbrush tattoo artists, Bingo, a cookie walk and scavenger hunt, caricature artists, harmonica making, musical playground and “Conducting Clinic” with Maestro St.Clair.

Before the symphony takes center stage at 7 p.m., guests will enjoy performances by OC Swing Machine, a talented ensemble performing swing jazz, as well as Saddleback College students performing beloved Broadway show tunes.

Along with music and activities, patrons can enjoy tasty fare for purchase including hot dogs, hamburgers and Mediterranean dishes along with sweet treats from Nothing Bundt Cakes, Kona Ice and others. Food trucks including The Burnt Truck will also be on hand.

Free shuttle service will be available from the Civic Center from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m.  Guests can reserve their spots on the lawn after 1 p.m.

With Olympic fever spreading around the world like wildfire, the City of Mission Viejo has produced three television programs spotlighting the local organization long responsible for producing countless Olympians. 

In this episode of “Coaches Corner with Paul Higgins,” the Mission Viejo Nadadores bid farewell to the club’s talented swimmers heading to the Olympic Trials in Omaha.  The show features Coach Bill Rose and includes interviews with Katie McLaughlin, Stephanie Peacock, Samantha Shelton, Grant Shoults and two-time Olympic gold medalist Ous Mellouli.

Coach Ivan Bondarenko and Olympic hopefuls Camryn Hidalgo and Michole Timm are featured in this MVTV News program on the Nadadores diving team – and viewers can learn more about the Nadadores and exciting renovation of the Marguerite Aquatics Complex in this short video.

“If you’re looking to learn how to swim, you can do it here,” said Ous Mellouli of the Nadadores’ impressive track record.  “If you’re looking to become the next fastest swimmer in the world, you can do it out here, too.”

 

Parks Make Life better winning collageMission Viejo is known for its tree-lined streets and bevy of parks and recreational opportunities.

In honor of July’s designation of “Parks Make Life Better Month,” the City produced a vibrant commercial spotlighting the rich, active lifestyle we enjoy in Mission Viejo.

Whether it’s a park or playground, senior program, youth or adult sports league or the Oso Creek Trail, the opportunities for folks of all ages to get fit and have fun are endless.

If you are seeking an exciting evening your entire family will enjoy, then make plans for Family Fun Night from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, July 23 at the Montanoso Recreation Center.

This fun summer event features a family luau, activities and the chance to test your skills on an inflatable pool obstacle course.

Family Fun Night is free for members and included in day fees for guests. General admission for non-members is $4 for kids under 13; and $8 for 14 and older. If you’re yet not a member, you can still obtain a 3-month seasonal pass starting as low as $75.
