City of Mission Viejo Summer News and Events

Date:

PhoneAt this year’s Symphony in the Cities on Saturday, July 30, be prepared to tap your creative, fun side through social media.

That’s right – the City will offer concertgoers the chance to win prizes through its first Instagram Scavenger Hunt and to be a star on its social media sites.

The fun takes place during an enchanting evening of music under the stars –with a special nod to Broadway. Symphony in the Cities is a free concert along the Village Green at Oso Viejo Community Park featuring the talented Maestro Carl St.Clair and Pacific Symphony.  The event begins at 4 p.m. with the Prelude in the Park featuring a conducting clinic with Maestro St.Clair and Musical Playground led by Pacific Symphony musicians. The symphony takes center stage at 7 p.m.

Instagram Scavenger Hunt participants can have fun completing different elements for the chance to win passes to the City’s recreation and fitness facilities along with a free ticket to an upcoming cultural arts event. Symphony in the Cities is also the last day to enter the “Play, Pose and Post” social media photo contest (see details here). Finally, residents are encouraged to take and post photos during the event using the hashtags #Preludeinthepark and #PMLBinMV.

Along with social media fun and activities, patrons can enjoy food and beer and wine for purchase.  Free shuttle service will be available from the Civic Center from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.  Guests can reserve their spots on the lawn after 1 p.m. For more information, visit http://cityofmissionviejo.org/DiscoverMV/ or call 949-470-8440.

Pokemon community hunt1The Pokémon craze continues at the Mission Viejo Library, with a third and final “Pokémon Go Community Hunt” set for Thursday, July 28.

This free event is from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and begins at the library at 100 Civic Center. Participants will head to the Oso Creek Trail for Pokéstops and to catch some wild Pokémon. The evening ends at the library where folks can pit their newly acquired monsters for supremacy over the library’s Pokémon Gym.

Participants must have Pokémon Go installed and accounts created on their Apple or Android devices. Trainers must be at level 5 to participate in Gym battles.  To take part in the hunt, people must sign a waiver (available here) and should bring water along with comfortable walking shoes. Minors must be accompanied by an adult.

No registration is required to take part in this exciting event. For more information, call 949-830-7100 ext. 5105.

Bocce ball2In an effort to provide families with a free night of fun, the City will host another Family Bocce Night on August 24.

The event, which follows three recent sold-out bocce events, is from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at 24932 Veterans Way.

Catering to all ages, this exciting event features bocce instruction and demonstration, family competitions and refreshments along with other games and activities.

Bocce ball, otherwise known as bocci, boccie, volo, lawn bowling or Italian bowling, is played with the small ball, also known as the jack or pallino, and eight larger balls.  The sport is a favorite at picnics, parks and barbecues. People have flocked to the community center to play the sport since the courts opened in February.

To participate in the August 24 Family Bocce Night, register online at econnect.cityofmissionviejo.org by referencing course #4717. For more information, call 949-470-3062.

Parks make life better entryThese are the final days to enter the city’s “Play, Pose and Post” photo contest that ends on Sunday, July 31.

The contest was launched in celebration of “Parks Make Life Better” month – asking residents to submit photos of themselves, family members or friends enjoying a favorite Mission Viejo park, program or facility.

To enter, simply post your photo with a description of 15 words or less and the hashtag #PMLBinMV to your Facebook or Instagram page through July 31. (Privacy settings should allow city staff to view the photos.) The number of likes will determine the winners, who will be announced on Aug. 5.

Grand prizes for the top three entries include family passes to the city’s recreation and fitness centers and gift cards.

National Night out resizeMission Viejo will join thousands of communities nationwide for the annual National Night Out crime and drug prevention event on Tuesday, August 2.

In celebration of this safe city, Mission Viejo Police Services is hosting an interactive community safety fair from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Target parking lot at 25601 Jeronimo Road.

National Night Out is a community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make our neighborhoods safer, better places to live. The event will offer residents timely and important safety information along with fun activities for kids. Free hot dogs will be available while supplies last and DJ – “The Mad Platter” – will keep the event pumping with music.
