Sara Lee debuts new lower-sodium offerings
By Ann Bagel Storck on 5/6/2010

Sara Lee Deli announced plans to debut the new Sara Lee Fresh Ideas Lower-Sodium Pre-sliced Deli Meats nationwide this spring.

The products are available in four varieties: Oven Roasted Turkey Breast, Honey Roasted Turkey Breast, Honey Ham and Virginia Brand Ham. The two turkey offerings have 25 percent less sodium than USDA data for comparable products, and the two ham offerings have 32 percent less sodium than USDA data for comparable products. They all have earned the American Heart Association's heart-check mark.

Suggested retail price for a 10-ounce package of the pre-sliced meats is between $4.99 and $5.99.

This launch follows last year's introduction of lower-sodium sliced-to-order deli meat from Sara Lee Deli. (See Sara Lee debuts sliced-to-order lower-sodium deli meats, Meatingplace, May 5, 2010.)

Celebrity chef brings 'Meatless Monday' to restaurants
By Dani Friedland on 5/6/2010

Celebrity chef Mario Batali is making it easier for diners to participate in Meatless Monday by offering vegetarian fare at his eateries.

Batali's 14 restaurants, which include Babbo, Del Posto, Bar Jamón and Osteria Mozza, will feature at least two vegetarian entrees every Monday, starting next week. The Meatless Monday logo will be printed next to these menu items.

The restaurants, however, will continue to offer meat on Mondays.

"The fact is, most people in the U.S. eat way more meat than is good for them or the planet," Batali said, in a statement. "Asking everyone to go vegetarian or vegan isn't a realistic or attainable goal. But we can focus on a more plant-based diet, and support the farmers who raise their animals humanely and sustainably. That's why I'm such a big believer in the Meatless Monday movement!"
