News Updates from Corpus Christi Christian Community FKB - Aliso Viejo
July 3-4, 2010
Our famiglia is gathering for ‘La Cena’ ….in TWO weeks!!!
On two Summer Saturday evenings, July 17th and August 14th. the famiglia of Corpus Christi will gather alfresco on our lawn to fill the night with food, beverage, song and dance. On two balmy Summer nights our parish will gather, as Tuscan villagers have gathered for centuries, to celebrate the familial bonds that weave us together. ‘La Cena’ (Lah…Chain…Ahhhh) is the communal meal of Summer celebration, of taking pleasure in each other’s company, of languorous conversations accompanied by ample food, wine, beverage, song and dance. ‘La Cena’ is all about our famiglia sharing table space, passing bowls of pasta and sizzling platters of sausage, breaking bread with one another and sharing famiglia stories along with favorite appetizers and desserts. Commencing immediately following the 5:00 p.m. Mass, ‘La Cena’ will feature full evenings focused on the leisurely meal and those who gather to enjoy it. While a movie will be available for the bambinos downstairs, there will not be any organized activities for children…they are welcome to romp and improvise their play as village children are known to do. ‘La Cena’ participants are asked to bring their own appetizers with which to make new friends as well as a desert for sharing….and bragging! Wine and summer cocktails will be available for purchase but participants are encouraged to bring their own favorite vino with which to quench summer thirsts. Replacing both the former ‘Summer Experience’ and the ‘Wine and Food Festival’, the two opportunities of ‘La Cena’ are the primary parish fund-raising events benefiting the Building Fund. Mindful of tight budgets, each evening of ‘La Cena’ is a modest $25 per adult (15 and up), $15 for children (10-14) and only $10 for bambinos (2-10), infants under 2 are free. To ensure adequate table space on our lawn, please complete the Reservation Form available on the Concierge Shelves and return it to the Parish Offices via USPS (27231 Aliso Viejo Parkway, AV, CA 92656) or via the weekly Stewardship/Offertory Collection. A special La Cena Booth will be up and available for hands on purchase of your reservations NEXT weekend after all the Masses.
A Parish Registration starts every conversation. Are you Registered?
Not a week goes by when we do not have a whole bunch of inquiries to our Parish Offices about Baptisms, First Communions, Marriages, etc….and it can end up being a disappointment to those who have NOT taken the time to become Registered (and participating) Parishioners. Our policy is that conversations about Sacramental plans can ONLY begin AFTER a person has been Registered and Participating within the parish for a minimum of three months (some parishes require six months of participation…in comparison we are pretty generous!) So, please, this is a gentle reminder of the importance of getting Registered…not to mention if you leave your purse, wallet or camera in the Grand Hall, it would be nice to be able to contact you! Registration Forms are available on the Concierge Shelves.
With summer vacations, misplaced Stewardship envelopes….if you are looking for a possible way to simplify your Weekly/Monthly Stewardship/Offertory support of Corpus Christi you may wish to join a growing group of parishioners who simply enroll their VISA or MasterCard with OUR Parish Office for monthly billing. You tell us how much you wish charged to your card, your information stays in OUR Office, we do not have an agency do the inputting of information, you get a handy record of your donations for IRS purposes…and you gain valuable points if you are enrolled in one of their Reward programs. If interested, please just give a call to Susie Hays at 389-9008 for more information or to get started.
Our POPs ministry (dads with their kids) is heading to an Anaheim Angels versus the Texas Rangers game
on July 31: Game Time: 6:05 pm.; Tailgate Time: 4:30 pm. Tickets are $16 with an additional $5 if you want to come early for the ‘Tailgater’ of hot dogs, potato salad and soft drinks. We have 30 tickets to start; dads can buy these tickets or buy their own, but still participate in the tailgater for $5. Reservation forms are available on the Concierge Shelves.

Not only does our weekly effort at selling SCRIP provide a regular contribution to our Building Fund, it provides an opportunity for those who sell Scrip to meet and converse with those purchasing it….in other words…it expands the world of those helping sell SCRIP. Our SCRIP ministry is in need of additional volunteers to help staff the table before and following the regular weekend Masses. All volunteers, like every other ministry, will be required to be fingerprinted (at parish cost) and complete the Safe Environment Training internet program. So…if you are looking for a fairly benign way in which to help the parish, are reliable and regular in your Mass attendance (not to mention trustworthy and with no criminal record)…please give a call to Betsy or Gary Kessler at 389-9008….or drop by the SCRIP table and leave your name and contact information with the sellers. Thanks!!
Fresh faces…and loving farewells…Pastoral Council changes….
We said it a few months ago but with the arrival of July it marks a transition within our Pastoral Council of four members. Our deepest gratitude and appreciation go out to Kevin Trout, Jan Kwok, Lisa Aguirre and Georgina Yacap for their past four years of service on the PC. Thanks for the sacrifice of time and the gift of your wisdom and insight you have so freely offered over these past four years. As of July 1st we welcome our newest members: Chris Watson, John Brady, Jeannie Conklin and Janet Cheetham to the Council and we ask God’s blessings upon them as they embrace fresh four-year terms. Corpus Christi has been strengthened and graced with the involvement of those who have, are and will serve on our Pastoral Council…in your generosity of spirit, please convey your appreciation to them when you encounter them! Thanks.
Please remember, the Parish Offices are closed this Monday, July 5th. Thanks.
On the weekend of July 24-25, we will have a guest speaker at all the masses offering the annual mission appeal for the church’s many-faceted missionary activities throughout the world. Foundation for Children in Need is a Catholic lay organization based in Arlington Heights , Illinois . Dr. Geetha Yeruva, co-founder of this Foundation is very happy to visit us and share about their mission work in the interior villages in the Southern part of India . FCN sponsors 2000 children and 50 elderly. This Foundation has been responsible for building several schools, boarding homes, a community health center and a home for the elderly. They have been providing free medical check-ups and medicine to thousands of needy people and children. We welcome Dr. Geetha and as always, the basket will be available on the altar for your consideration. To know more about their mission work, please visit: www.fcnindia.org.
Thank you for your generous offering of non-perishable food items, South County Outreach is extremely grateful for your faithfulness and kindness. The next food collection will be the weekend of July 24-25th. Thanks.
If men are clearly from Mars and women are truly from Venus as the famous book asserts, how are we different or similar in our expressions of faith? This is the topic of what will be a lively discussion on Saturday, July 10 when Heartprints and First Saturday Men’s Fellowship join together. Breakfast starts at 8 a.m. in the Lower Hall but as always, all women and men are welcome to start early with breakfast preparation and faith sharing at 6 a.m. All women and men of the parish should not miss this eye-opening conversation for a Saturday morning.
Our thanks, as always, to Chris Mackey for coordinating and shepherding our most recent Corpus Christi Diner’s Night at Stadium Brewery…and thanks to all those who came out and enjoyed the evening while helping our Building Fund.

Questions For Tim, Co-Owner of Tribeca;
Debi from laguna beach; "what is the difference between the smoothing treatments available for hair?
Tim: Keratin treatments are the new high in haircare. They cut frizz, add shine, cuts your blowdrying time in half. It leaves your hair soft and manageable but does not take your curl out. Not a relaxer but a smoothing treatment. Kerasmooth treatment lasts 3 to 4 months at a cost of $300. to $400. depending on length of hair. You must wait 3 days before you can shampoo hair. Keratin Express lasts 4 to 5 weeks and can be done right after a color. It will lock your color in besides adding shine and cutting frizz. Cost is $100. Keratin Complex is similar to Kerasmooth. Cost is $300. Consult with one of the professionals at Tribeca.
Joan of Aliso Viejo; "what type of hair is best for this smoothing treatments?"
Tim: That's the beauty of smoothing treatments. They make old hair look young and fresh. Chemical treated hair looks healthy again. And if you do not color your hair that is ok . Shine,Shine,Shine. Any hair questions you have just sent a email to tat@tribecahairsalon.com.

Traffic-easing project starts July 5
Work to improve traffic flow at the intersection of Pacific Park Drive and Aliso Creek Road is expected to begin Monday, July 5. This traffic-easing project is part of the city's ongoing efforts to maintain its roadway system at a high level of service.
The Pacific Park and Aliso Creek Road Intersection Project includes adding right-turn lanes from eastbound Pacific Park onto Aliso Creek Road, and northbound Aliso Creek Road onto Pacific Park Drive.
During construction, motorists may experience short delays, as eastbound Pacific Park Drive and northbound Aliso Creek Road will be reduced to two lanes in these directions.
Traffic control signs will detour motorists through and around the construction zone. Pedestrian traffic will also be re-routed at this intersection. Construction is expected to take place from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day, but the sidewalk and lane closures will be permanent during construction.
Entrances to the businesses next to the project will remain open from Pacific Park Drive, but alternate exits to Aliso Creek Road will be used.
The project is expected to be completed in September.
For more information, contact the Aliso Viejo Public Works Department at 949-425-2530 or pworks@cityofalisoviejo.com or visit the "Project Alert" link on the city's website at www.cityofalisoviejo.com.

ORANGE COUNTY CONSERVATION CORPS CELEBRATES A RECORD NUMBER OF GRADUATES
Anaheim, CA – June 28, 2010–Succeeding against the odds is never easy, but a record number of graduates proved what they are capable of by earning their high school diploma from the Orange County Conservation Corps.
Assemblyman Jose Solorio was the keynote speaker at the June 25 ceremony, during which 55 students received recognition for completing a program which often requires 12-13 hours of work and study per day.
"The Corps gave me the opportunity and desire to have a better future for myself," said graduate Jannette Delgado, 19, of Santa Ana. "I had many distractions and I didn't care for school, I wasn't motivated. What the Corps has given me ... I started to care about doing better for myself."
Delgado's immediate plans are to attend a local junior college, move on to a four-year college and then pursue a career in psychology.
"This is the biggest day for the OCCC all year," said Jarom M. Luedtke, the OCCC's Director of Education. "It is a day to celebrate OCCC’s best and brightest. It is the tangible evidence that the OCCC not only changes lives, but does so in a extraordinary way. The vast majority of these students were told that they would probably never receive a high school diploma.
"This event silences the critics and cynics who give up on OC young adults. It infuses into every 18- to 25-year-old that a high school diploma is still possible. It demonstrates that there is a better choice. The OCCC is certainly one of the ways - if not the best way-for OC young adults to become the best that they can be."
Corps members, many who will go on to college, volunteered their time for such events as Toys for Tots, Renegade Races, Green Job Corps workshops and graffiti removal through Senator Lou Correa's office, all while attending school.
"The young men and women graduating today have overcome tremendous adversity just to get here," said OCCC Executive Director Max Carter. "So many must overcome poverty, avoid gangs, stay free of drug abuse, and avert incarceration in an effort to ensure a positive life for themselves and their children. These Corps members will now go on as working, productive members of their community."
Corps members must earn 200 credits and pass the California High School Exit Exam to graduate, and they understand the importance of a diploma and how it will help them get better jobs, earn more money and increase their self esteem.

Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time USA 234th Birthday!
Isaiah 66:10-14 Galatians 6:14-18 Luke 10:1-20
One or two people can do very little by themselves but when one or two raise their voices and speak out, others begin to listen. One by one and two by two something small begins to grow and what was once small and forgettable becomes a force with which to be reckoned. In the building of a great bridge or a splendid structure…someone has the initial idea and raises the concept….others start to imagine it….imagination catches fire amongst more and more people…and the idea of bridges and splendid structures become real…not by the labor of one person…but through the efforts of many.
In this weekend’s Gospel we hear of Jesus sending out his disciples as ‘evangelists’ of his message. He gives them some rudimentary instructions and we hear of their excitement at their efforts and results. In Galatians we have a powerful statement by Paul about the meaningless of ‘external signs’ when it comes to depth of meaning and commitment, rather, Paul directs us to the ‘new creation-new concept’ we become in Christ.
It is an apt thought by which to jump into all things Fourth of July. While the media will flash images of our splendiferous structures, national shrines and natural wonders, while Old Glory will be featured prominently (as it is on our elevator tower)…the Fourth of July is more a testimony to what people can do when they get their minds and souls around an idea. On Independence Day, we are encouraged to look beyond just the national barbeque and picnic and consider what happens when compromise and commitment walk hand in hand with dedication and sacrifice.
The IDEA of the United States was born not so much from a clear understanding of what the original signers of the Declaration of Independence knew they wanted…but what they knew they did NOT want. Who we are today (and who we will be tomorrow) is the result of thousands, millions, of voices being raised in discussion, sometimes passionately, about what defines us. That we can be united as individual states is remarkable. That we can wrangle, fight, bloody each other…and still pull together is remarkable. E Pluribus Unum, out of many, one.
From one, something strong and grand….be it a splendid structure, a bridge, the Church, the Body of Christ, made up of billions of parts…or the United States, 234 years young…and made up of 300 million parts..and growing! Remarkable what we can do when we set our minds and hearts to something….even more remarkable what we can accomplish when God is woven within our endeavors.
Thank you for joining with us as we celebrate and honor our 234th birthday, may your celebrations be safe and satisfying. Our La Cena Dinner is TWO weeks away…make sure oyu make your reservation NOW. Please take a Bulletin with you with news of others things coming up in the weeks ahead, it might be summer, but we don’t slow down. As you break open the chicken salad and crunch on fried chicken and slurp the watermelon….in the glow of the rockets red glare, remember, you are loved! Happy Birthday USA!!! FKB

CALIFORNIA FIRE MUSEUM APPROVED FOR ORANGE COUNTY GREAT PARK
After several years of planning, the California Fire Museum and Public Safety Education Center was approved by the Orange County Great Park, Board of Directors, this week as one of the first venues to be placed in the Great Park in Irvine, California.
The 31,600-square-foot facility, designed with a mix of exhibits, interactive learning facilities and multi-purpose space for classes and other events, will be located on nearly three acres adjacent to the Great Park balloon ride. The project will be built in several phases.
Phase # 1 will begin with a 5,800-square-foot "public safety education center" on 1.2 acres at an approximate $5 million price tag, with construction anticipated to begin within the next three years.
Don Croucher, President of the California Fire Museum, noted: "To be selected as one of the first venues in the Great Park is a great honor. Now the hard work begins, seeking support from all aspects of the community and the financial resources from philanthropic organizations and others required to bring this concept to reality".
The California Fire Museum and Public Safety Education Center will be the first of its kind in California and unique among similar facilities throughout the country. A premiere destination for the public and fire service professionals to engage in educational and cultural programs, the venue will provide a full range of learning experiences, using advanced technologies, to bring historical and other displays to life, and facilitated learning through the use of interactive multimedia presentations and experiences.
As one of the first to be approved by the Great Park Board, the California Fire Museum and Public Safety Education Center could serve as a preview site for those that follow and a partner in developing this park into the greatest urban park in the nation from the ground up.
Spanning more than 1,300 acres, nearly twice the size of New York's Central Park, the Great Park will be the largest urban park in the United States. Its location, in the center of Orange County, California, situates the Great Park in a diverse metropolitan community of three million located halfway between Los Angeles and San Diego and easily accessible to more than 10,000,000 Southern California residents.
The California Fire Museum Board does not intend to wait for construction to be completed. It plans to continue the community outreach it has provided for several decades and has a list of events to be held at the Great Park in the near future and as the project is developed.
David Hubert, Vice President of the California Fire Museum, agreed with Don Croucher: "We are looking for sponsors, members and assistance from the fire service, related organizations, the public it serves and particularly those with the financial resources to bring the Public Safety Education Center to reality".
For more information and for opportunities to support and fund this effort, contact the California Fire Museum and Public Safety Education Center web site at: www.cafiremuseum.org and for information on the Orange County Great Park contact: www.ocgp.org

LEGOLAND Water Park Hosts VIP Celebration
Link: http://www.LEGOLAND.com

Merlin Entertainments CEO Nick Varney took an inaugural tour of LEGOLAND® Water Park June 15 following a VIP reception in honor of the world’s first LEGO® themed Water Park. Today’s festivities included rhythm water drummers, rafts customized with soft LEGO bricks modeled by Water Park lifeguards and 40 local children celebrating the start of summer.
The day's special guests were among the first to see the newest features of LEGOLAND Water Park and many accompanied Varney on a tour led by LEGOLAND California Resort General Manager Peter Ronchetti. “For me, the Water Park has a lot of significance, a lot of meaning,” said Varney during the event where he started his presentation by describing how much he loved both LEGO and water as a child. “It is at base, a Water Park based on LEGO. From my perspective, to every child in the whole of California, that makes it the most exciting place to go this summer.”
Ronchetti also spoke during the event: “After all the discussions and brainstorming and creative thinking that went into the Water Park design, the magic ingredient was adding the children – it was when we added children that we could really see how they would behave and interact with the Water Park. I can tell you that we are really, really thrilled and excited with their reactions.”
VIP guests came from all over San Diego County and included 40 children from local schools. They were among the first to see Build-A-Raft, the LEGO inner tubes kids customize with soft LEGO bricks before floating down the lazy river; the Imagination Station, where kids can build bridges, dams and cities out of DUPLO® bricks and test them against the flow of water; Aqua Tune, a musical fountain where kids conduct their own water symphony with the touch of their hand and the Water Fall dumping water down from the 45-foot-tall LEGO themed tower. While many of these features were in the original design, several had not been revealed to the public yet as final touches needed to be made.
Key attractions at LEGOLAND Water Park include Orange Rush, a family tube slide where up to four people can ride together down a 312-foot-long curving track on an 11-foot in diameter half pipe; Twin Chasers, two side-by-side enclosed red tube slides that stretch nearly 130 feet; Splash Out, an open body slide that invites guests to slide 240 feet and “splash out” into the water below; Joker Soaker, a fun interactive platform in the wade pool where kids can aim water cannons at each other as a LEGO jester model tells jokes and pours 350 gallons of water down upon them; the Build-A-Raft River, an 850-foot-long lazy river where guests are splashed and sprayed by jumbo LEGO models; DUPLO® Splash Safari, a water play area designed especially for toddlers with three small slides and interactive DUPLO creatures including an alligator, polar bear and an elephant; and Kid Creek, a mini lazy river built with younger kids in mind.
LEGOLAND Water Park is located at the north end of LEGOLAND California adjacent to Fun Town with the entrance located between the Factory Tour and the Adventurer’s Club. LEGOLAND guests can upgrade their Park tickets to include LEGOLAND Water Park for just $10. Geared for families with children ages 2 to 12, the Water Park will be included in the price of Water Park Hopper tickets and Resort Hopper tickets which include SEA LIFE Aquarium as well. Water Park admission will also be included in Resort Memberships. To learn the latest Water Park news, see photos and video, visit www.LEGOLAND.com.
