New Tax Targeting Small Businesses on November ballot?
Learn more at next Legislative Alliance meeting THIS Friday!
Small businesses throughout California and right here in South Orange County are struggling to recover from the Great Recession. Jobs are scarce.
So why would anyone penalize those who are creating the jobs necessary for recovery through the imposition of new taxes on those very jobs!? That’s exactly what opponents say would happen if Proposition 24 passes November 2nd.
Learn more about this important ballot measure at the next meeting of the Legislative Alliance of Southern Orange County (LASOC) this Friday morning at 7:30 a.m.
Oscar Urteaga, Southern California Field Director for the No on 24 – Stop the Jobs Tax – campaign will explain the implications of Proposition 24 and what local businesses can do about it.
This important meeting takes place this coming Friday, July 23rd from 7:30 to 9 a.m. at Saddleback College – 28000 Marguerite Parkway in Mission Viejo, Student Services Center, Room 212. Ample and free parking is available adjacent to the Student Service Center in Lot 5.
States all across the country have been updating their tax laws to attract and grow businesses and jobs during these difficult economic times. This proposition would likely send California down the wrong track at the worst time. Join us as we learn about Proposition 24 and what we as a business community can do about it.
There is no cost to attend. Walk-ins are welcome but RSVPs are requested. Please call Karen at (949) 635-1634 to do so or if you have questions.

Questions For Tim, Co-Owner of Tribeca;
Debi from laguna beach; "what is the difference between the smoothing treatments available for hair?
Tim: Keratin treatments are the new high in haircare. They cut frizz, add shine, cuts your blowdrying time in half. It leaves your hair soft and manageable but does not take your curl out. Not a relaxer but a smoothing treatment. Kerasmooth treatment lasts 3 to 4 months at a cost of $300. to $400. depending on length of hair. You must wait 3 days before you can shampoo hair. Keratin Express lasts 4 to 5 weeks and can be done right after a color. It will lock your color in besides adding shine and cutting frizz. Cost is $100. Keratin Complex is similar to Kerasmooth. Cost is $300. Consult with one of the professionals at Tribeca.
Joan of Aliso Viejo; "what type of hair is best for this smoothing treatments?"
Tim: That's the beauty of smoothing treatments. They make old hair look young and fresh. Chemical treated hair looks healthy again. And if you do not color your hair that is ok . Shine,Shine,Shine. Any hair questions you have just sent a email to tat@tribecahairsalon.com.

OPERATION REVIVAL: WEST COAST REACHES OUT TO HELP GULF COAST TOURISM
HUNTINGTON BEACH, CA—June 21, a Huntington Beach, CA-based tourism marketing agency, is reaching out to Gulf Coast travel and tourism businesses affected by the devastating oil spill in the Gulf. With summer here, Gulf Coast businesses face millions of dollars in lost tourism, which is a $5.7 billion a year industry in the Gulf. Hotels, restaurants, attractions, fishing and diving shops, rental properties and other tourism related businesses face a monumental struggle to keep their businesses alive during this challenging time.
JUVE Creative, Inc. aims to band together these Gulf Coast tourism businesses in an effort to aid in the recovery process and get the word out that many of these businesses still have much to offer and have not been as adversely affected by the conditions in the Gulf as reports suggest.
• President Obama recently had a seafood lunch at a seaside restaurant in Gulfport, Miss., emphasizing the idea that restaurants along the Gulf Coast have maintained high standards for quality food.
• Many areas along the Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama coastlines and in the Florida Panhandle have reported stretches of clean and clear waters along their beaches as the massive clean-up operations strive to make a positive impact in the area.
• Thousands of volunteers continue to donate time and money to help with clean-up and to rescue wild life suffering from the conditions.
“We on the West Coast realize the importance of a clean coastline to not only our tourism and travel industry, but to our lifestyle as well,” said Christina Haakenson, Founder of JUVE Creative. “If it could happen in the Gulf, it could happen here, it could happen anywhere. We want to do our part to help.”
JUVE has created campaign websites (FloridaThrives.com and GulfCoastThrives.com) which provide Gulf Coast businesses the opportunity to partner together in one place to promote themselves in recovery and let travelers know of the many attractions that have made the Gulf Coast one of the most popular travel destinations in the world. Just as importantly, businesses that sign up will help the overall cause because JUVE will donate 10% of the membership proceeds to the actual clean-up and recovery efforts.
About JUVE Creative, Inc.:
Headquartered in Huntington Beach, California, JUVE Creative, Inc. is a full-service marketing communications, branding and public relations agency with a concentration on travel and tourism. Helping over night destinations, attractions, museums, festivals, hotspots and hotels launch, rejuvenate and drive their brands to travelers. USDA Purchases Dark Meat Chicken Products for Federal Food Assistance Programs/ Other News From Meatingplace.com
USDA to buy dark meat chicken products
By Rita Jane Gabbett on 6/16/2010
Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack on Tuesday announced USDA will purchase up to $14 million of dark meat chicken products for federal food nutrition assistance programs, including food banks.
"The purchase … will help poultry producers who are experiencing an increase in dark meat cold storage inventories and a decreasing wholesale price," Vilsack said in a news release.
USDA's Agricultural Marketing Service buys food products each year to support the National School Lunch Program, the School Breakfast Program, the Summer Food Service Program, the Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations, the Commodity Supplemental Food Program and the Emergency Food Assistance Program. USDA also makes emergency food purchases for distribution to victims of natural disasters.
National Chicken Council President George Watts called the purchase "a timely action that will relieve the industry of excess product while providing high-quality food to needy people here at home."
He noted the U.S. chicken industry under normal circumstances sells about 1.5 billion pounds of chicken legs to Russia annually. Since Jan. 1, however, Russia's ban on chicken products from plants that use chlorinated water has shut U.S. processors out of that market.
More information on purchase details is available here.

We are all responsible now
(The views and opinions expressed in this blog are strictly those of the author.)
Events in the Gulf are hitting the headlines: big oil, big news, big mess. Let's hope that the technology can handle nature's worst. I am optimistic. But let's hope most of all that we can all learn from this event. In particular we have to learn something about ourselves. I realized this when I was in Brazil last week listening to people in the meat supply chain trying to avoid another mess.
Oil is about energy and energy is about our modern lifestyles and economies. We have relied on fossil fuels and in the case of oil, have pushed the boundaries of oil exploration to the outer limits (or should I say the deeper limits). Long gone are the days when a simple "nodding donkey" rig was all that was needed to bring oil up from below ground in those rich and easy to harvest oil fields in Texas. Nowadays deep sea drilling needs technology that can work from the frozen wastes of the Artic to the hurricane lashed waters of the Gulf – at incredible depths.
And what is the connection with Brazil? Read on.
The reason I was in Brazil was to play a small part in the Round Table for Responsible Soy Association's 5th International Conference and General Assembly. This Association was formed five years ago with the aim of creating a platform that could design and deliver sustainable soya production in the key soya producing and exporting countries. It now has 140 members in 20 countries and the recent Brazil meeting agreed a set of rules that will be used to benchmark "responsible soy". In this way the people who buy soya from RTRS-certified farms will be sure that they are not destroying the world's resources.
And how does this connect with big oil? Well, oil is about energy and so is soya. Livestock producers buy soya as a key ingredient in meat production which, of course, is used as energy for human beings. It's also true that soya can be used to produce biodiesel – a competitor for oil used for motor transport. And Brazil has been ahead of the game in using its climate and soils to produce biofuels for many years. The EU has just introduced new regulations about these biofuels – the Renewable Energy Directive – that ensure that fuels produced from crops have to pass stringent tests on sustainability so that we don't make the problem worse by encouraging production of non-sustainable fuels from crops.
The key issue for the new RTRS standard is, can it help stop the destruction of forests and loss of biodiversity in South America – which, if the scientist are correct – are a major factor in regulating the world's climate? That's the mess that the soya producers and the meat supply chain surely want to avoid. It may not be as immediate as the mess in the Gulf right now but it is just as important.
What do we learn about ourselves from this?
My view is that we must learn to look in the mirror. The mess in the Gulf has come about because we, as consumers, have demanded more and more cheap energy and the technologists and oil companies have responded by pushing their fossil fuel supply chains harder and harder. And then something broke. The meat supply chain is no different, if consumers ask for more and more then, eventually, and even with the best intentions, something will break. The mess in the Gulf has led to calls for more regulation of the oil industry. The meat supply chain, through activities like the RTRS in Brazil, will have to regulate too. But it's not just about regulation. We are all responsible now.
Consumers have to think hard about the consequences of asking for more and more.

Pacific Park Drive and Aliso Creek Road Intersection Project - AV Contract Consideration
City of Aliso Viejo
12 Journey
Aliso Viejo, CA 92656
949-425-2500
Council to consider contract for traffic-easing project Wednesday
The City Council on Wednesday, June 16 will consider awarding a roughly $297,500 contract to Kormx, Inc. for the Pacific Park Drive and Aliso Creek Road Intersection Project.
The Pacific Park Drive and Aliso Creek Road Intersection Widening Project is part of the city's ongoing efforts to maintain its roadway system at a high level of service and improve traffic flow through this busy intersection. The traffic-easing project includes adding right-turn lanes from eastbound Pacific Park onto Aliso Creek Road, and northbound Aliso Creek Road onto Pacific Park Drive.
The total project, which is well under budget, is expected to cost $335,000, and will be paid for from Measure M competitive funds.
The work will consist of removing existing pavement, installing new asphalt pavement, replacing sidewalk, roadway striping and traffic signal improvements. During construction, motorists may experience short delays, as eastbound Pacific Park Drive and northbound Aliso Creek Road will be reduced to two lanes in these directions.
Traffic control signs will detour motorists through and around the construction zone. Pedestrian traffic will also be re-routed at this intersection. Measure D Fails, Mission Viejo Business Community Wins!
In case you missed it, Mission Viejo’s anti-business Measure D failed during Tuesday’s Primary Election Day. With more than 61 percent of the city’s voters opposing Measure D, this was a big win for not only businesses in Mission Viejo but for Chamber members throughout the region who potentially faced the same threat had Measure D passed.
The South Orange County Regional Chamber of Commerce led the effort to educate and mobilize Mission Viejo businesses against the initiative, which would have required expensive citywide election campaigns any time an expansion or relocation of a business involved rezoning property.
Chamber members throughout Mission Viejo placed signs in windows, walked their neighborhoods and educated friends about the impact Measure D would have on their business.
This effort was part of a larger campaign involving partners in the Legislative Alliance of Southern Orange County (LASOC), including prime sponsor Orange County Association of Realtors (OCAR), the Orange County Chapter of the Building Industry Association of Southern California (BIA/OC), the Orange County Business Council and California Women’s Leadership Association (CWLA), as well as the Orange County Taxpayers’ Association.

Great Family Reunion Recipe - Trash Can Turkey from meatingplace.com
Chef’s Table
By: Michael Formichella
Trash can turkey
(The views and opinions expressed in this blog are strictly those of the author.)
With the passing of Memorial Day and summer festivities getting into full swing I am reminded of a sacred event that started about 20 years ago at our family reunion. Each year, over Memorial Day weekend, my wife's side gathers for a family reunion in New York State. Forty-ish people show up from all over the country…and we all stay in the same house, tents and Winnebagos!
Now feeding this hungry group takes a fair bit of planning and execution. The four-day menu varies a bit from year to year, but Saturday night's dinner is always Trash Can Turkey with summer fixings. Early Saturday morning we thaw two 20-plus-pound turkeys and apply a spicy rub all over them. Then we place them back in the refrigerator for another couple of hours while the pit is rebuilt from last year's feast. A stack of wood is piled alongside three bags of charcoal briquettes and a metal trash can. The pit construction is made of loose bricks stacked five high in a C shape. The bricks on the floor have been dug in several inches so they are level with the ground. My brother-in-law had a metal, trident-like holder welded after our first-year attempt of using a large wooden spike (duh) to hold the bird upright. The metal trident is placed in the center of the floor, driven securely into the ground, and does a much better job.
The charcoal is started and wood is slowly added until a pile of glowing coals warms the surrounding area. The coals are pushed to the side in a doughnut shape, exposing the trident. The bird is placed on the holder and the trash can is placed over the bird. The coals are pushed up around the sides of the can. Methodically, wood and charcoal are added to keep the glow around the same level. It takes roughly six to eight minutes per pound (and several beers from the ice cold keg). Times vary, so use a thermometer and cook the bird thoroughly.
I must admit I have no idea how this idea was forged, but it's a ritual woven into the fabric of our family. In no time at all it will produce some of the best tasting, flavorful, smoky and moist turkey you'll ever eat. Enjoy and let me know what you think if you try it. All variations work, so be creative and share. This flavor profile and these textures remind me of a turkey carnitas. That would make a great new manufacturing profile. Do you agree?

BK promotion spurs demand for QSR pork
By Lisa M. Keefe on 6/11/2010
Pork is not typically a big item at fast-food restaurants after breakfast. But Burger King's limited-time menu offering of pork ribs is changing that dynamic.
As long as Burger King can keep the ribs coming, that is.
Some Burger King Holdings Inc. restaurants are running short of ribs, according to a report in The Wall Street Journal. In fact, the chain might run out of its entire rib order, supplied by Tyson Foods Inc., before the promotion is due to end later this month, the Journal says.
"The U.S. consumer has really enjoyed this product and purchased it beyond our expectations. That's causing us to run out a bit early," the Journal quoted John Schaufelberger, Burger King's senior vice president of global product marketing and innovation, as saying.
Good news for Burger King, who has at times been at odds with its franchisees over the company's desire to push value-menu cheeseburgers and other items that are not extremely profitable for the restaurant operators. It also may be good news for QSR companies overall, if customer prove willing to spend on more expensive items after a period of value-menu preeminence.
Marketing tests before the product roll-out had indicated that customers were likely to buy the smaller, less expensive versions of the rib order, costing $1.99 to $2.99. But on a national scale, customers proved to like the larger six- and eight-piece servings, costing $5.69 and $7.19.

TRIBUTE TO THE ICONIC MUSIC OF JOHN DENVER - PACIFIC SYMPHONY’S SUMMER FESTIVAL 2010
A NIGHT TO FILL UP THE SENSES—PACIFIC SYMPHONY’S SUMMER FESTIVAL 2010 KICKS OFF WITH A 4TH OF JULY CELEBRATION, FEATURING A TRIBUTE TO THE ICONIC MUSIC OF JOHN DENVER
Plus, patriotic favorites, a salute to armed forces, complete with color guard, and a brilliant display of fireworks!
Orange County, Calif.—June 7, 2010—For many, summer in Orange County officially gets underway with the first concert of Pacific Symphony’s Summer Festival 2010— “Fourth-of-July Celebration: A John Denver Tribute”—on Sunday, July 4, at 8 p.m., at Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Irvine, the orchestra’s summer home.
Sponsored by Hoag Hospital, the Symphony’s 23rd season of symphonic music under the stars, begins on a heart-warming and inspirational note, featuring music by Denver, one of the world’s best-known and best-loved performers, who earned international acclaim as a singer/songwriter, environmentalist and humanitarian.
Channeling this American legend with uncanny skill is vocalist Jim Curry, singing such Denver hits as “Rocky Mountain High,” “Sunshine On My Shoulders,” “Take Me Home, Country Roads,” and “Annie’s Song.” Over the course of three decades, the late singer recorded and released approximately 300 songs, outlasting countless musical trends and garnering numerous music awards and honors.
Conducted by the Symphony’s Principal Pops Conductor Richard Kaufman, the 4th of July celebration also includes a moving tribute to the U.S. armed forces—and a spectacular fireworks finale! Individual tickets are $25 (lawn) to $105 (orchestra); kids under 14 are half price in most sections with the purchase of an adult ticket. Five-concert
packages range from $89 for lawn seating to $459 for orchestra seating. Guests are welcome to picnic on the grounds of the amphitheater starting at 6 p.m. For more information on the series or purchasing tickets, call the Symphony ticket office at (714) 755-5799, or visit the website at www.pacificsymphony.org.
“As John Denver’s conductor for almost 25 years, I experienced first-hand the tremendous enthusiasm of audiences everywhere as they listened to his songs,” says Maestro Kaufman. “And now our audience will have the opportunity to hear them sung by Jim Curry, a terrific performer who truly captures the uplifting spirit that John brought to every performance. Jim brings an extraordinary vocal resemblance to John, and in a way, its like part of John is still here! And in a special treat, the Symphony will be using the original orchestrations used by John when he performed with orchestras, including our own Pacific Symphony.”
Curry first came to national attention in the CBS movie, “Take Me Home: The John Denver Story,” in which he landed an off-camera role singing as the voice of John Denver. Curry’s subsequent show was the first and only full-length, sell-out Denver tribute in Las Vegas, and he often performs with Denver’s former band members. Curry, who believes that Denver’s words still ring true in these difficult times of war and environmental crisis, says: “These songs blend the images of our natural earth with a love for each other as people. The care you give to someone you love is the best care. Making that connection to our earth and to each other is the goal.”
“John Denver’s music speaks to peoples’ hearts in a beautiful and exciting way,” adds Kaufman. “It’s going to be a night to celebrate America...and to celebrate an American treasure, John Denver.”
Coming up—the Symphony’s second concert of the series takes place on
Saturday, July 17, at 8 p.m., with Assistant Conductor Maxim Eshkenazy leading “Cirque de la Symphonie,” a spectacular event featuring a jaw-dropping fusion of classical music
and the circus feats of aerial fliers, acrobats, contortionists, dancers, jugglers and strongmen.
Summer Festival 2010 is presented by Hoag Hospital, with additional support from the Orange County Register; the Symphony’s official airline, American Airlines; official hotel, The Westin, official classical music station, KUSC; official television station, KOCE-TV; official pops radio station, K-EARTH; and official media partner, KPCC.
