THE LEGO™ ATLANTIS ADVENTURE
Now Playing!
The all-new LEGO® Atlantis Adventure is now showing in the SEA LIFE Theater! Professor Samantha Rhodes, an archaeologist and expert in ancient languages, has discovered a Triangular Map on the ocean floor, and believes it to be the map to Atlantis. When the story begins, viewers find themselves aboard the Neptune, a state-of-the-art submarine, where the Professor has gathered a top-notch salvage crew.
She briefs the crew on the real reason behind the mission, but before they can voice their displeasure at the farfetched story of Atlantis, the submarine comes under attack by a Giant Crab. Things go from strange to outright bizarre, as the crew finds itself being plummeted to the bottom of an underwater volcano, besieged by a host of mutant sea life, and mentally tested to uncover the secret of the mysterious Glowing Crystals they uncover along the way.
It takes all their strength, willpower, and brainpower to overcome the unknown elements of the ocean’s depths, but if they survive, they might discover the greatest treasure the world has ever known −The Lost City of Atlantis. The 22-minute long LEGO Atlantis Adventure plays several times daily and is included in the price of admission. Kids 3–12 $12, Seniors 60+ $16; Adults $19. Parking $5. Visit www.sealifeus.com or call (760) 918-5346
IT’S A WHALE OF A PROJECT AT SEA LIFE AQUARIUM
Through September
SEA LIFE™ Aquarium Carlsbad at LEGOLAND California Resort joined first graders from Jefferson Elementary School in Carlsbad for “Beach Trash, A Whale of a Problem.” The students collected beach trash including bottle tops, sun glasses, toys, shovels and even a pair of dentures and turned it into a life-sized gray whale mosaic they named “Little Gray”. A 5-minute documentary about the creation of the trash whale follows students as they learn about the effect trash has on our beaches. The documentary airs daily at the Aquarium. "Little Gray" is on display at SEA LIFE through early September. Kids 3–12 $12, Seniors 60+ $16; Adults $19. Parking $5. Visit www.sealifeus.com or call (760) 918-5346

Get your feet wet in “The Shark and Ray Adventure” where young guests become marine biologists, assisting an adventurous educator in accumulating field notes while studying the sharks and rays of the Ray Lagoon. And don’t miss “The Daily Dive” and help our exploration diver uncover secrets of the Lost City of Atlantis. Discover fascinating fishy facts, talk to our diver via specialized communication equipment and try on a few scuba signs for size. Kids 3–12 $12, Seniors 60+ $16; Adults $19. Parking $5. About MADD
MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) is a non-profit organization founded in
1980 by Candace Lightner in Sacramento, California after her daughter was
killed by a drunk driver. The driver who struck and killed her daughter had
two previous convictions for Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) and was out on
bail for a drunk driving hit-and-run only two days prior. Today, MADD has
over 600 local chapters across the United States and is the largest crime
victims' assistance program in the world with more than three million
members and supporters.
Since MADD's inception drunk driving related deaths
have declined by 43 percent. MADD's commitment is to eliminate drunk driving
through public awareness, victim assistance, youth programs, and public
policy. MADD's mission statement "to stop drunk driving, support victims of
this violent crime and prevent underage drinking," is indicative of their
new additional focus on reaching out to the nations' youth.

New Tax Targeting Small Businesses on November ballot?
Learn more at next Legislative Alliance meeting THIS Friday!
Small businesses throughout California and right here in South Orange County are struggling to recover from the Great Recession. Jobs are scarce.
So why would anyone penalize those who are creating the jobs necessary for recovery through the imposition of new taxes on those very jobs!? That’s exactly what opponents say would happen if Proposition 24 passes November 2nd.
Learn more about this important ballot measure at the next meeting of the Legislative Alliance of Southern Orange County (LASOC) this Friday morning at 7:30 a.m.
Oscar Urteaga, Southern California Field Director for the No on 24 – Stop the Jobs Tax – campaign will explain the implications of Proposition 24 and what local businesses can do about it.
This important meeting takes place this coming Friday, July 23rd from 7:30 to 9 a.m. at Saddleback College – 28000 Marguerite Parkway in Mission Viejo, Student Services Center, Room 212. Ample and free parking is available adjacent to the Student Service Center in Lot 5.
States all across the country have been updating their tax laws to attract and grow businesses and jobs during these difficult economic times. This proposition would likely send California down the wrong track at the worst time. Join us as we learn about Proposition 24 and what we as a business community can do about it.
There is no cost to attend. Walk-ins are welcome but RSVPs are requested. Please call Karen at (949) 635-1634 to do so or if you have questions.

National Flute Association Convention to be held in Anaheim, California, August 12 – 15
Anaheim, California, August 12 – 15
2010 Convention Offers Concerts, Workshops, Inspiration and Fun for Flutists and Flute Enthusiasts of All Ages
Anaheim, CA: The National Flute Association will host its 38th Annual Convention in Anaheim, California, August 12 – 15, 2010 at the Anaheim Marriott with over 3,000 flutists, composers, flute scholars and flute enthusiasts from all over the world. The public is invited to attend the concerts and workshops that are offered Thursday through Sunday during the convention. The theme for the NFA convention this year is “Illuminating Tradition,” paying homage to the NFA’s heritage as an organization that serves to inspire, enrich and educate.
The Gala concert on Thursday, August 12 at 8 PM, “Chamber Music with a Twist,” will be an exciting fusion of classical with everything from jazz and blues to world music featuring performances by world music group Mystic Journey, the Matt Eakle Blues Band and flute beat boxer Greg Pattillo with his group PROJECT Trio. Jazz Review hailed Project Trio, saying, "They have a mission that transcends the music and touches humanity by bringing music to the kids, to the streets, to the masses. They do it so well that we all should get with the PROJECT and encourage this level of creativity and entertainment for the sake of all of us!" Mystic Journey is led by Grammy nominated flutist Suzanne Teng, whose credits include the flute work on Lost, along with well known jazz bassist Barry Newton and drummer, Gilbert Levy. Matt Eakle has been called “a through and through jazz cat” by the Bay Area Jazz Examiner and “a monster” by Mark O’Conner.
A Gala Concerto concert on Saturday, August 14, at 8 PM will feature acclaimed soloist Carol Wincenc performing a world premiere by Jake Heggie, Cathy Ransom-Karoly of the Los Angeles Philharmonic performing Reinecke's Concerto, German flutist Michael Faust performing the U.S. premiere of a flute concerto by award-winning Latvian composer, Peteris Vasks and piccolo star Jan Gippo playing the premiere of a new piccolo concerto by Eric Ewazen.
The NFA will honor Lifetime Achievement Award recipients Leone Buyse and Fenwick Smith, both of whom played with the Boston Symphony for many years and are luminaries of the flute world, and National Service Awardee Gwen Powell. Buyse and Smith will perform in a Gala Concert with former students on Friday night at 8 PM. The highs and lows of the flute spectrum will be featured in concerts of “Piccolo Gems” with the California State University, Fullerton, Wind Symphony and “Voices from the Deep” featuring big flutes from alto to contrabass, both on Thursday morning.
Great music will continue from 10:30 PM until midnight on Friday and Saturday with Late Night Jazz Cabarets with Jazz Flutist of the Year Nicole Mitchell on Friday and Nancy Stagnitta on Saturday. Other headliners include former Chicago Symphony flutist Walfrid Kujala, Japanese flutist Nobutaka Shimizu, principal flute of the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra, soloists Robert Aiken, Robert Dick, Amy Porter and Alexa Still, New York Philharmonic piccolo player Mindy Kaufman, and former LA Phil member, James Walker, who went on to form the jazz group Free Flight.
Young flutists can take advantage of the NFA’s first “Kids Kamp.” This pilot program on Saturday is for flutists ages 8–13. For a nominal price ($20 per person) kids will enjoy programming all their own under the tutelage of Carol Wincenc and Barbara Ogar. They can bring their flutes for the hands-on reading session and then enjoy any other convention offering, including the exhibit room, until 6 pm.
There will be workshops and performances by top and rising stars in the flute world, a wide variety of concerts, competitions and workshops and hundreds of exhibits by flute manufacturers, music and recording companies and others. This year’s convention offers several “firsts” including seminars on career and artistic development, concerts and workshops spotlighting low flutes, the Kids Kamp, and Professional Development Credit available through California State University Fullerton. Flutists and their families can take advantage of the NFA member discounted rates at Disneyland August 9 – 22 by purchasing tickets by August 8.
A complete listing of events is available at nfaonline.org/convention. Tickets for all events range from $10 to $25, and will be available at the NFA registration area at the Anaheim Marriott during the convention. Tickets for the evening concerts, at $25 or $20 for students, will also be sold at the door. All events will be held at the Anaheim Marriott and are open to the public. For more information on the convention, call 661-250-8920 until August 11 or 714-748-2433 during the convention, or visit www.nfaonline.org.

City Adopts FY 2010-2011 Operating Budget and Capital Improvement Program
At its regular City Council meeting on July 6th, the City Council adopted a $38.4 million Operating Budget and Capital Improvement Program for FY 2010-2011. The budget was adopted following a four-hour budget workshop on June 29th at which the Council received public input and reviewed the proposed budget in detail.
Given the current economic challenges and the State’s ongoing budget crisis, the City is pleased to report that the FY 2010-2011 budget maintains all existing service levels and programs and provides $9.1 million in funding for the Annual Capital Improvement Program. The focus of this year’s Capital Improvement Program is continued funding for the Citywide Street Rehabilitation Program, the City Hall Project and the Alicia Soccer Field Synthetic Turf replacement. A complete copy of the budget can be found on the City’s website by clicking on the link below. Please note, Adobe Acrobat 7.0 or later is required to view this file. File size is 4 mgs.

Community Development Department Scores Top Marks In Customer Satisfaction Survey
The City’s Community Development Department received top marks in a recent Customer Satisfaction Survey conducted by True North Research. The survey, conducted between April 14 and May 7th, was administered to 361 randomly selected customers who obtained a building permit for at least one project over the past 18 months. Participants were asked a series of questions pertaining to various aspects of the building permit process, from the permit application stage through building inspection. They were also asked to rate the City’s efforts to make planning and building services information available online, in brochures, and through meetings.
When it came to overall satisfaction with the City’s Community Development Department staff, a resounding 89% of those surveyed indicated that they were either very satisfied or somewhat satisfied with the service they received. The report concluded that:
“Considering that the Community Development Department has a regulatory relationship with its customers and that it must balance the interests of developers with the interest of the communities that will be affected by a project, the result of the study indicate that the Department is performing exceptionally well in what are often difficult circumstances.” The report went on to state that “to the extent that a survey like this be viewed as a report card on the Division’s performance, the results of this survey should be considered an “A”.”
As impressive as these results are, one of the goals of the survey was to identify opportunities to improve service. Given the fact that customers were generally pleased with the Department’s performance, the consultant suggested that top priority should be given to maintaining the high quality of service that departmental customers have come to expect. A complete copy of the Customer Satisfaction Survey can be found on the City’s website at:

"Brilliant and remarkably moving"
The New York Post
Join us as we celebrate the founding of America in the Tony Award-winning 1776! Watch the sparks fly as John Adams, Thomas Jefferson and Ben Franklin fight for our freedom and draft the Declaration of Independence before your very eyes. You may know how this story turns out, but you’ll still be on the edge of your seat! A riveting musical filled with history, humor and romance!
The 1972 film version of 1776 was unique for a movie musical. The same creative team as well as many of the actors from the Broadway production were used. William Daniels once again starred as John Adams, with Ken Howard as Thomas Jefferson, Howard Da Silva as Benjamin Franklin, John Cullum as Edward Rutledge, Ron Holgate as Richard Henry Lee, and Virginia Vestoff as Abigail Adams. It is a rarity for many of the original Broadway performances to be preserved on celluloid as the cast of 1776 was.

WHAT DID THE CRITICS THINK OF THE ORIGINAL 1969 PRODUCTION?
Clive Barnes of the New York Times wrote, "On the face of it, few historical incidents seem more unlikely to spawn a Broadway musical than that solemn moment in the history of mankind, the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Yet 1776... most handsomely demonstrated that people who merely go 'on the face of it' are occasionally outrageously wrong....1776 is a most striking, most gripping musical. I recommend it without reservation. It makes even an Englishman's heart beat faster... the characters are most unusually full... for Mr. Stone's book is literate, urbane and...very amusing...This is a beautiful mixture of pride, ambition, an almost priggish sense of justice."
John Chapman of the New York Daily News penned, "This is by no means a historical tract or a sermon on the birth of this nation. It is warm with a life of its own; it is funny, it is moving... Often, I sat enchanted in my seat... The songs and lyrics are, as I have indicated, remarkably original."
The New York Post noted, "In this cynical age, it requires courage as well as enterprise to do a musical play that simply deals with the events leading up to the signing of the Declaration of Independence. And 1776... makes no attempt to be satirical or wander off into modern bypaths. But the rewards of this confidence reposed in the bold conception were abundant. The result is a brilliant and remarkably moving work of theatrical art."
