The mission of the group is to bring together parishioners who have open job positions with those who are looking for employment opportunities. Darla DuAmarell – At age 6 a recurring neck pain led to the discovery of a tumor encasing her spinal cord. Given 3 months to live Darla has been in remission for six years and is a 5th grader at St. Catherine’s.

As mentioned in last week’s Bulletin, we are designating the last weekend of each month as ‘Feeding Our Family Weekend.’ This will be a monthly opportunity for our parishioners to bring non-perishable food items to Church and deposit them in the specially marked bin that will be outside on the courtyard. Last week’s food was donated to South County Outreach to assist them in their response to the unprecedented demands being placed upon them. Please note that we are only able to handle non-perishable food, no clothing or furniture or additional supplies….just non-perishable food. Under the oversight of our Hands Across the County Ministry, please contact Jeannie Prioli (215-2123) if you would like to specifically help with this outreach. Speaking of ADULT SACRAMENTAL EXPERIENCES….are you presently CIVILLY married but have never had your marriage blessed by the Catholic Church? Then perhaps our Late-Spring Marriage Blessing Event on Sunday, June 14th is for you!? In order to participate, the following requirements need to be understood:
1. Both persons have NEVER been married before (this is a first marriage for both) and at least one spouse needs to be Roman Catholic.
2. If one or both persons have been married previously (in any manner or capacity) the prior marriage(s) need to have already been annulled by the Roman Catholic Church.
3. The couple need to be already Registered and participating within Corpus Christi as of March1, 2009. (Sorry, this is not available for extended family or friends who are not already REGISTERED Corpus Christi parishioners.)
4. Both spouses need to attend a preparation meeting on Sunday, April 26 at 2:00 p.m. in the Grand Hall. This is an adult-only meeting, please arrange to leave all infants, toddlers and children with sitters.

There is more to this week than just Easter……
Some are perplexed by the title ‘Triduum’, which comprises Holy Thursday, Good Friday and concludes with the Vigil on Holy Saturday. It is essentially a SINGLE liturgy divided up over three days, the crucial and most powerful of liturgies, it grounds us in the mystery of God that continues to unfold in our lives. The Triduum (and other associated events of Lent/Holy Week) is not merely a ‘re-enactment’ of what happened to Jesus, that would grow tedious and old very quickly. The power of Triduum is to touch upon the UNFOLDING and CONTINUING mystery of Triduum in OUR lives. In a society that puts much stock in solid proof and evidence, MYSTERY is very difficult. Scripture for example, is not ‘inspired’ because of the absolute historicity of its’ accounts and stories but because of the MYSTERY of God contained within its’ passages. Thus, you are invited into the unfolding MYSTERY of Triduum….you are urged to resist the temptation to think that only Easter is of importance. Life is not just one big Easter, it is also Holy Thursdays and Good Fridays…and yes, Easer too….but Easter does not denote the absence or wrongness of Holy Thursdays or Good Fridays. If we think life is supposed to only be one big Easter, we are setting ourselves up for a major fall. Hence, we are offered the MYSTERY that life is comprised of Holy Thursdays and Good Fridays …and that Christ may be found within them in equal abundance to the Easter moments of resurrection. FKB

Wake-up calls are invariably jarring and disturbing. Not just the buzzing alarm clocks that awaken us to another day but especially the broader ‘societal’ wake-up calls like the ones our culture and economy are now experiencing; these are unpleasant reminders that we may have constructed our lives upon sand. With the stark choices of expending money for this or that necessity in life, the presumed and ‘acquired tastes’ of our consumer society must now be weighed carefully. Our smug satisfactions with investment portfolios and retirement plans are rudely interrupted, our dreams must be tempered with a reality no longer limitless. In the midst of our discomfort and uncertainty, as we endeavor to keep the financial darkness at arm’s length….we arrive at the door of Holy Week: Palm/Passion Sunday. While we already know the story, perhaps this year the retelling of Jesus’ triumphant entrance into Jerusalem, followed by the rapid spiral to the emotion-filled actions and meal of Holy Thursday followed by the abandonment and crucifixion of Friday will hold fresh meaning? Perhaps we have deceived ourselves into thinking that life is nothing but a series of Resurrections, of Easter moments? Have we forgotten that an essential part of Easter is the dying and writhing that necessarily precede it? The scriptures we proclaim throughout the year attest to this: ‘Unless the grain of wheat falls to the ground and DIES…..’ or ‘Those who save their lives will lose them….while those who lose their lives for my sake, will save them.’ or ‘Pick up your cross and follow me…’ As seen through the lens of Holy Week our present fiscal and societal adjustments are part of an eternal rhythm to which the individual stories of this week speak. The crowds exulting at Jesus’ arrival in Jerusalem could easily be our remembered euphoria over high dividends and economic expansion. The somber Passover of Holy Thursday could be our dawning awareness that we have bought into a ‘house of cards’ that is now tumbling. The betrayals and dying of Friday might well be our own dismal assessment of what we can and can no longer do. The emptiness of Holy Saturday, the sitting and waiting….is an apt metaphor for our entire culture as we wonder when the sun will rise and our fortunes be restored. While the story of the Passion entails one week, the metaphor of the Passion is not so easily constrained. Surely Easter will eventually dawn….but not necessarily next Sunday, or next month or perhaps not even next year. The wake-up call of what Scripture has been saying is upon us….it is time to pick up our crosses and follow Jesus, to find him in the events of our time, to discover his face in the emptiness of uncertainty, to become aware of his presence in all the things we would ordinarily abhor and avoid. Yes, Easter will surely and eventually dawn…but not without the fullness of this week, a week we do not call ‘Happy’, but rather…’Holy.’
Thank you for coming and sharing these opening moments of Holy Week with our Corpus Christi Community. Please accept a Bulletin on your way home, it contains the full Holy Week schedule. Please note that our EASTER SUNDAY Mass schedule is identical to our normal schedule, 8, 10 and 12 Noon….and all of the Masses are celebrated within our Grand Hall, not outdoors as we have done in the past. Your are invited and HIGHLY encouraged to participate in the fullness of Holy Week by coming to the entire Triduum experience of Holy Thursday and Good Friday (both starting at 7:00 p.m.) Easter makes so much more sense and is ‘complete’ when it flows as a natural part of what has occurred prior. Please remember that next week we will have lots and lots of visitors who will be joining us for our Easter celebrations, our Grand Hall will be packed to overflowing…so be prepared for the crowds, bring your patience and smiles, bring your willingness to help direct our visitors to the bathrooms and explain our home to them. Don’t forget that you may park on the street, but please try to only cross at the light. Finally, as Holy Week unfolds, remember, you are loved. FKB

Ocean Institute Celebrates International Surfing Day 2009 with Special Surfing/Beach-Themed Activities
April 1, 2009, DANA POINT, Calif. – The Ocean Institute will join in the worldwide observance of International Surfing Day on Saturday, June 20, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. The day will feature exhibits and presentations by staff and volunteers on water quality and beach closures, animal adaptations within the surf zone, wave formations and “dry” surfing instructions on how to catch a wave.
Established by the Surfrider Foundation and Surfing Magazine, International Surfing Day was created to blend the founders’ love of surfing with a desire to create an awareness of the importance of preserving our ocean environment.
The cost to enter the Ocean Institute is $6.50 adults, $4.50 children (ages 3-12), Ocean Institute members free. Those who participate in one of the nearby beach-cleanups beginning at 9 a.m. will be given free admission.

LAGUNA NIGUEL, CALIF – Founder of Donna B’s Cookies Donna Billman of Laguna Niguel will be a candidate in the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) Orange County/Inland Empire Chapter’s 2009 Man & Woman of the Year competition. For the next 10 weeks, Billman will compete against other men and women who are community, corporate and civic leaders to raise the most money for cancer research and earn the title of LLS’ Woman of the Year. A former co-worker and close friend of Billman’s died of leukemia.

LNWC had a successful event held at Jane Hamel's home on March 27. They had sixteen members attend to promote the club and give information about their charity endeavors, social activities, and what the club does for the community of Laguna Niguel. They had twelve guests. The guests were very interested in learning about the club. The club has fifty members and is hoping to recruit more through this event. St. Mary’s to Receive a Garden from Savannah’s Organic Ranch
Aliso Viejo, CA, March 30, 2009—St. Mary and All Angels student Savannah Lee Sachen touched many lives during her brief time on Earth. Today, her spirit lives on in the hearts of students. Recently, St. Mary’s partnered with Savannah’s Organic Ranch (SOR) to install the Savannah’s Organic Garden on the school’s campus.
“The St. Mary’s community is blessed and privileged to have the very special opportunity to honor the life and memory of Savannah in this everlasting way,” said Headmaster John O’Brien.
A portion of the garden will be used by students for growing carrots, turnips and other crops. The remaining portion will include two benches, surrounded by indigenous flowers/plants. The kindergarteners will begin planting in the new garden on Thursday, April 2, 2009.
Tina Garcia, who was Savannah’s Kindergarten teacher at St. Mary’s said, “The garden will be an important component of our students’ unit of inquiry on farming.” The Kindergarteners will be able to experience the entire organic farming process of preparing the soil, planting the seeds, managing the growing crops, harvesting the crops and preparing the produce for sale and consumption. Throughout the unit, students will learn lessons on life science, nutrition, math and business. The garden will also be a symbol of Savannah’s courage, joy and compassion during her battle with cancer while she attended the non-denominational Christian school.
“I cannot find a better tribute to my daughter than planting a garden that will teach and inspire children to be more health conscious and know the importance of organic farming,” said Joe Sachen III, who along with his wife, Lisa, founded Savannah’s Organic Ranch.
Savannah’s Organic Ranch (SOR) continues the legacy of Savannah’s passion for people, animals and nature by educating children and adults alike on the benefits of organic foods and farming. Its goal is to involve children in the organic process, from planting to harvesting, and then creating and enjoying healthy meals. ‘Twilight Camp’ - AV Ranch April 25th
Registration available Wednesday for city’s ‘Twilight Camp’
In-person registration is available starting Wednesday, April 1 for the City’s Family Twilight Camp At the Ranch– a fun-filled family event that includes a host of activities, savory barbecue, gooey s'mores and much more.
The Family Twilight Camp takes place from 4 to 9 p.m. on April 25 at the Aliso Viejo Ranch, 100 Park Avenue.
The popular event is designed to give families and friends the opportunity to spend quality time together enjoying, a sunset hike, scavenger hunt, knot tying, environmental awareness and entertainment around the campfire courtesy of Cowboy Jack along with a hearty dinner and delectable s’mores.
In-person pre-registration is required and is available from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday April 1-22 and on Friday, April 10 (only) at City Hall, 12 Journey, Suite 100. Registration is not available by phone or fax and must be done in person at City Hall. Cost is $5 per person and includes food and drinks.
The camp is recommended for parents and children 5 years of age and older, and all children must be accompanied by an adult. Pets are prohibited.

April is Autism Awareness Month - Post Your Stories In ALNews
Asperger's Syndrome
Asperger's Syndrome is a neurological disorder that, like others on the spectrum, is marked by difficulties in communication and social interaction. The set of characteristics easily identified with the condition was first identified by Austrian pediatrician Hans Asperger.
How it's similar to classic autism
According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, children with Asperger's Syndrome find it difficult to identify and express their feelings, just like those with classic autism. They find it challenging, even impossible, to connect with others, often don't hold eye contact and have trouble reading other people's faces and gestures. Many kids flap their hands, a behavior often associated with classic autism; speak without much emotion (or have otherwise unusual speech patterns); need to follow schedules rigidly or else the world feels out of control, and are intensely, even obsessively, interested in one specific subject, so much that they become veritable experts in that field. They also exhibit sensitivities to various stimuli, from sounds to clothing to food items.
How diagnosis differs
Compared with classic autism, children with Asperger's Syndrome usually don't show any signs of major cognitive difficulties — their IQ falls in the normal or even superior range—and they exhibit few, if any, delays in speaking. They also generally hit most of their milestones within reasonable time periods. Because of this, some describe children with this condition as “high-functioning” or as having a “mild” form of autism, at least compared to others on the spectrum. To many, they may seem just like other children but not quite — socially awkward in a manner that's not easily understood. This explains why healthcare providers may miss seeing it in their young patients, or may misdiagnose it completely. Or why some parents don't seek help until much later than those whose kids display a more profound or more obvious set of symptoms.
What To Do About It
Treatments
Fashioning an approach to manage the condition is a highly personal one that requires the input of everyone on your child's healthcare team, including doctors, psychologists, teachers, therapists and parents. Many parents wind up with a multi-pronged approach to treating Asperger's Syndrome, choosing regimens and strategies that address their children's main challenge: inability to connect with others. To this end, they may combine such varied modes of treatment as:
* Various behavioral regimens, including Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), Floortime, sensory integration therapy, and more
* Social skills training, which, as the name suggests, teaches children the how-tos of social interaction that come naturally to other kids but not to them. In some cases, pictures are used to explore various events and scenarios so children know how to react when they happen
* Alternative therapies, which could run the gamut from hippotherapy,which has kids riding horses to improve their coordination, to martial arts therapy, which also targets their mobility
* Medications (which may include anti-depressants)
How to Cope
You'll need the love and support of friends and family to be able to take on the daily challenges of raising a child with Asperger's Syndrome, which will be many. Life for you may mean hopping aboard a rollercoaster that will give you bright hopeful peaks followed by dreary, even stomach-churning, lows. Know that the whole of it — the joys and strains — are part of the journey, and that it's okay to seek help. That may come in the form of extra household help, additional doctors or, even, a vacation to get away from it all. Know that Asperger's does not have to defeat your child. Look to his other successes: Is he a graceful swimmer? An impressive musician? A hardworking student? All of these gifts define him, too.
Structure is important to children on the spectrum, and even more so for those with Asperger's Syndrome, as it makes them feel secure and grounded. Unfamiliar social situations unnerve them, as they test their ability to adapt, so it's best to allow for time so they can prepare for what lies ahead of them. Talk to your child about what to expect and give him the help he needs so he learns how best to handle the circumstances before him.
As children grow older and become more aware of the limitations that their condition has placed upon them, it may be helpful for them to receive counseling with a therapist trained in dealing with pervasive developmental disorders. As difficult as it is for parents to go through this journey, it's even harder for the children themselves who have to work through their own personal challenges and other people's ignorance as they make their way in the world.
How to Grow With It
Teens & Adults
As with many others on the spectrum, those with Asperger's Syndrome often find the adolescent years to be a thicket of emotions that becomes unnavigable in ways they just don't understand. Unable to relate to other teenagers and their befuddling social rules, not to mention their emotions that yo-yo up and down, they may wind up isolated and overwhelmed and most certainly misunderstood. As they grow older, they'll encounter more challenges romantically, though they may be able to relay their expertise and intellectual abilities into success in the workplace. Nevertheless, with the right mix of therapies and constant support from their friends and families, teens and adults with Asperger's Syndrome are able to forge relationships with others on their own terms and carve a place of their own in the world.
Long-Term Care
First, the good news: Your child will likely be able to live independently, earning a living and taking care of their needs. That said, social relationships may always be minefields, and as such, will continue to be a source of frustration and, for some, despair. With this in mind, it may be beneficial to have a therapist or counselor familiar with the condition be available to help your child as he ages and encounters increasingly complex relationships that give way to equally complex emotions and situations.

After all these years of tempting fate….we are going indoors!
It seems that we have tempted fate long enough! The threat of rain…or actual water falling from the sky has played havoc with set-up plans and over-flow crowd placement for everything from last year’s Wine and Food Festival to even cloudy skies on last week’s St. Patrick’s festivities. In looking at our Easter Masses, we have continually rolled the dice and more or less come up with rain-less days…some of them have been scorchingly hot, others have been frigidly cold…but at least it has not rained. Thinking that the recent record of ‘rained-on’ events might be strategic warning signs, this year our Easter Sunday Masses will be at the SAME TIME AS THE USUAL SUNDAY MASSES (8, 10 and 12 Noon) and will be hosted INDOORS, within the Grand Hall, with about 400 additional chairs positioned outside on the concrete patio. In the past we have set-up 1700 rented chairs for the two outdoor Easter Masses….with no realistic back-up in case of rain to handle that crush of people. Thus, by increasing our Easter morning Masses to the usual three and by insuring that a substantial number of participants will be indoors, we think we have our bases covered…and we save the money we would have spent on chair rental! If you have always relished being outdoors for Easter, the patio area will still afford you that pleasure….but the indoors will be just a few steps away in case of extreme heat or wetness.

As mentioned in last week’s Bulletin, we are designating the last weekend of each month as ‘Feeding Our Family Weekend.’ This will be a monthly opportunity for our parishioners to bring non-perishable food items to Church and deposit them in the specially marked bin that will be outside on the courtyard. These non-perishable food items will be distributed to our local and Diocesan Food Banks to assist them in their response to the unprecedented demands being placed upon them. Please note that we are only able to handle non-perishable food, no clothing or furniture or additional supplies….just non-perishable food. Speaking of ADULT SACRAMENTAL EXPERIENCES….are you presently CIVILLY married but have never had your marriage blessed by the Catholic Church? Then perhaps our Late-Spring Marriage Blessing Event on Sunday, June 14th is for you!? In order to participate, the following requirements need to be understood:
1. Both persons have NEVER been married before (this is a first marriage for both) and at least one spouse needs to be Roman Catholic.
2. If one or both persons have been married previously (in any manner or capacity) the prior marriage(s) need to have already been annulled by the Roman Catholic Church.
3. The couple need to be already Registered and participating within Corpus Christi as of March1, 2009. (Sorry, this is not available for extended family or friends who are not already REGISTERED Corpus Christi parishioners.)
4. Both spouses need to attend a preparation meeting on Sunday, April 26 at 2:00 p.m. in the Grand Hall. This is an adult-only meeting, please arrange to leave all infants, toddlers and children with sitters.

Dana Point, CALIF., March 2009 – The Ocean Institute is offering Blue Whale Safari cruises during the summer; the first cruise is Saturday, June 27, 8 a.m. – 1 p.m. The Safari trip often takes participants out past Catalina Island, the feeding grounds of the great blues, the world’s largest animal.
Institute marine biologists lead the cruises aboard the Sea Explorer, which makes use of equipment such as an acoustic array, plankton nets, video microscopes and a sediment sampler.
Other upcoming trips are July 18 & 25, August 8 & 22. The cost of the whale watching cruises is $55 ($49 Ocean Institute members). Participants must be age 4 or older, under age 18 must be accompanied by an adult. A continental breakfast will be served; participants should bring a sack lunch. St. Mary’s “Angels in Paradise” Gala Promises to be a Hit
Aliso Viejo, CA, March 25, 2009 St. Mary and All Angels, a non-denominational Christian school, announced today that its upcoming gala has sold out in attendance. The event, benefiting the school, will be held on Saturday April 4, 2009, at the Fairmont in Newport Beach. Gala chairs and St. Mary’s parents, Gerri Flanagan and Byerlei Strohmeier, are confident the guests will enjoy the theme, “Angels in Paradise” with vacation resort attire being the evening’s fashion.
Festivities include recognizing eighth grade student Liviya James, the recipient of the 2009 Legacy Leadership Award. Each year, the annual Legacy Leadership Award honors a St. Mary’s eighth grade student who demonstrates superior leadership skills, evidence of service, and civic responsibility. Each student in the competition writes three essays and is interviewed individually a panel of judges consisting of local community and business leaders.
Joining James in this prestigious honor is Chris Driggs who is well known in the community for his leadership in youth and school lacrosse. He is the general manager of the Orange County Starz Lacrosse, director of Earthquake Lacrosse and is the Lacrosse coach at St. Mary’s and Santa Margarita Catholic High School.
Gala sponsors include Hollencrest Capital Management, Planet Beauty, Mission Hospital, Renaissance Club Sport, and the Orange Coast Women’s Medical Group. The live auction will feature unique items such as a bottle of 1990 Chateau Margaux Premier Grand Cru Classe wine, an Augusta Masters Golf Package that includes two badges for the Master’s Tournament, golf for two and facilities use at the adjacent Augusta Country Club with three nights at the Partridge Inn, a weekend trip to New York with dining at the Tavern on the Green, and a Saks Fifth Avenue shopping spree in Chicago.

Team Women Dana Point Chapter meeting is Monday, March 30th @ noon at the Aegis of Dana Point.
Team Women is the fastest growing women-only business networking organization in all of North America.
