CVHS - CAHSEE March 16th,17th
California High School Exit Exam for Sophomores
Capistrano Valley High School will be administering the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) on March 16th and 17th. Important points for ALL students are below.
Sophomores:
„« All sophomores are required to take the English portion of the test on Tuesday, March 16 and the Math portion on Wednesday, March 17. Students must take and pass both sections of the test to meet graduation requirements.
„« Sophomores will eat lunch at 12:40 p.m. Please encourage your student to eat a nutritious lunch. The cafeteria will be open for sophomores only on test days.
„« Sophomores must quickly report to their assigned room at the end of lunch at 1:15.
„« Prior to the test days, room assignments will be posted on the Guidance Office and Library windows.
„« Students must show a photo I.D. when they check into their assigned classroom. If students have lost their ID, they must obtain a student print out from the Guidance Office for a .25 charge.
„« Although there is no time limit for taking the tests, past experience has shown that most students will be done by 4:30 on Tuesday and somewhat earlier on Wednesday. For students who normally ride the school bus, service will be available at 4:30 p.m. on both days. Students who finish later will need to make arrangements for alternative transportation.
Attendance at school is always a priority, but these days are especially critical as this is an important step toward the goal of high school graduation. Please don¡¦t schedule any appointments for your student on these days in order to ensure your student will be in attendance on both days of the CAHSEE administration.
All other grade levels (9,11,12)
„« EARLY RELEASE - On CAHSEE test days there will be a special minimum day schedule for all students in order to allow sophomores to test in the afternoon. Specifically, at 12:40 p.m. all classes will be dismissed and 9th 11thand 12th grade students will leave campus. Please plan your pick-up times accordingly.
„« Regular bus service will be available.
Thank you!

Upcoming Events for March at Malcom Elementary in Laguna Niguel
March ongoing, Malcom Mariners vs Moulton Hawks -- THE RECYCLING CHALLENGE IS STILL ON!
The Recycling Competition between the mighty Malcom Mariners versus the Moulton Hawks is still under way! So save, collect and bring in your CRV (California Redemption Value) aluminum cans every Monday and your CRV plastic bottles every Wednesday! Drop-off points are located adjacent to the carpool thoroughfare, and near the front-office/library portico as well as on campus. Our aim is to load up that recycling bin--often referred to as the big, beige bin--before Moulton Elementary fills theirs! It means big cash for our schools, a big cleanup for our earth, but most important: Malcom Pride is on the line! ...Okay, so maybe that's not the most important benefit, but competing in the first-ever intra-school recycling challenge has its merit. It's US versus THEM, people! Go MARINERS!
March FAMILY Restaurant NIGHT: Please help Malcom make up the difference and order dinner from Family Restaurant Night. We have 3 options a month. The first Thursday of every month is Baja Fresh Night. The second Thursday is Domino's Pizza Night is our third dinner of the month which changes monthly! Join us for Family Restaurant Night at Ball Park Pizza with your friends and family this month on February 18th! Do something for the school that does so much for your kids. Check the PTA website for flyers and further information.
PRESIDENTIAL FITNESS CHALLENGE/FITNESS VOYAGE
All Malcom students will be participating in the Presidential Fitness Challenge on March 24th and 26th. Students will receive a Malcom Mariner for recording their training each day for January, February, and March on the Fitness Voyage log. You can download your Fitness Voyage logs from Malcom School and PTA websites. Please check out the Presidential Fitness website it describes the events and lists the qualifying standards www.presidentschallenge.org.

STAND OUT TEACHERS OF THE MONTH
Every year DJAMS puts on an amazing Talent Show. This show would not be possible without the support and involvement of teachers. Mandy Berndt and Stacey Olson produced the Talent Show this year. They worked with students and teachers to come up with an hour long show filled with many talented acts.
They worked together at lunch and after school to put together a show that everyone would enjoy. However, they could not have done this without the support of many other teachers. Ms. Squires, Ms, Todd, Mrs. Simmons, Ms. Nicol, Mrs. Vollebregt, Ms. Ferguson, Mr. Dwyer, Ms. Berndt, and Mrs. Olson spent many days after school practicing for a Teacher Act. They learned dances and put together costumes in order to show students how much they care about and support them. In addition, Mrs. Cox, Mr. Backal, Ms. Roman, Mr. Carter, and Mr. Wellikson joined in the fun and made guest appearances in the Teacher Act.
DJAMS is a unique school because it has so many teachers who want to be involved in activities such as the Talent Show.
The students love to see their teachers on stage, out of the classroom setting. Thank you to all the teachers who were in the Talent Show and who came out to watch the Talent Show.

Census wants 10 minutes of U.S. residents’ time
Orange County residents can expect a postcard-sized letter in the mail this week reminding them to fill out the 2010 census questionnaires expected to hit U.S. households by mid-March. The questionnaire is the shortest in the history of the U.S. Census Bureau, consisting of 10 questions. In all, it shouldn’t take more than 10 minutes to fill out, according to U.S. census officials in California. At a Newport-Mesa Unified School District Board of Education meeting last week, members urged the audience to fill out the questionnaires because it could lead to more money set aside for the district, which plans to cut $12 million from next year’s budget.

Hankey K-5 Doo Dah Run Reminder
The Carl Hankey PTA wants to remind you that the Hankey Doo Dah Run will be this Friday, March 5th at Cordova Park next to the school. The Doo Dah Run is a new spin on the PTA’s annual fundraising event, the Hankey Run, and all proceeds from the Doo Dah Run support K thru 5 fieldtrips and assemblies.
Students in each classroom have worked hard to come up with their own unique classroom themes for the run. It should be a lot of fun Friday morning as each class marches out and showcases their creativity. A classroom run schedule is posted on the Hankey Website and families are welcome to come out and watch the festivities Friday morning.
Doo Dah Run sponsorship forms are due on Wednesday, March 3rd. Remember, for every $20 in sponsorships, students’ names will be entered into a drawing to win a free Digital Video Camera. Also, if a student collects at least $50 in sponsorships, he/she will receive an exclusive ONE TIME “No Homework Pass” (to be used at their teachers’ discretion).
The PTA wants to thank all of you for your support for this important fundraiser for Hankey fieldtrips and assemblies. Our objective is to raise $8,000 from the Run and we’ll need everyone’s help to accomplish this goal. Thank you again for your help and we’ll see you at the Doo Dah Run this Friday!
Sincerely,
The Carl Hankey PTA
