Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Genesis 18:1-10 Colossians 1:24-28 Luke 10:38-42
Given our ‘get out there and give it your best shot’ culture, this weekend’s Scripture selections can disturb our ‘can-do spirit.’ We live within a society that ‘tolerates’ the deep-thinkers…but we also make cartoons about the lone hermit sitting at the top of the mountain…and those who seek the meaning of life from them. Greater credence and relevance is bestowed on those who pursue advanced degrees, who busy themselves with creative enterprise…and of course the entrepreneurial guru who creates ‘something out of nothing.’ In some ways, today’s Gospel selection from Luke is a clear contrast between those who listen and think as opposed to those busy doing….and Jesus’ praise of the former is unsettling to those of us who get things done.
Martha is of course the whirlwind of effective domestic hospitality (related perhaps to another Martha of our own era???) while Mary is presented as the ‘non-worker’ who sits and listens to Jesus. How many times have we seethed at visiting relatives or friends who flop on our patios or barcoloungers while we are busy cleaning the dishes or emptying the trash? Does not St. Paul himself say that those who ‘are not willing to work should not eat’? Indeed!!! However, before we get too smug and self-satisfied….today it is Jesus himself who praises Mary and gently rebukes Martha….and therein lies the rub. The tendency of us to see the two women as polar opposites is part of OUR issue….we do approach many things as ‘one way or another’…rather than seeing solutions as a mix of approaches.
The qualities of Martha AND Mary are BOTH to be present within the healthy and balanced life….not just one or the other. Jesus has no quibble with Martha…until she criticizes the apparent laziness of Mary, seemingly dismissing her qualities of attentiveness. Jesus acknowledges that Martha is busy and anxious about many things…but reinserts the value and importance of Mary’s reflective approach toward hospitality.
Applying this reminder to our own lives…certain quaint sayings come to mind: ‘look before you leap’…. ‘measure twice – cut once’…. ‘Stop and smell the roses’…..or if quant sayings don’t float your boat, just go out and buy some M&Ms for your coffee table as a reminder when things are going crazy….the balanced life requires BOTH Martha AND Mary…not just one or the other!
Thanks for joining with our Corpus Christi parish community on this Summer Weekend….the occasion of our FIRST La Cena Summer Festival. Remember, another La Cena is scheduled for August…so even if you missed this weekend’s dinner, August is coming and promises to be even warmer!!! The Bulletin has info about upcoming summer events and programs which may be of interest to you, please take a copy home when you leave. As the fullness of summer enfolds you with traditional pleasures and opportunities, remember, you are loved. FKB

Our Summer Sacramental Prep Session approaches…
A reminder, our parish policy is that any family seeking the Sacrament of Baptism, First Reconciliation or First Eucharist, Marriage, needs to have been a REGISTERED PARISHIONER for a minimum of THREE MONTHS prior to attending any Sacramental Prep Sessions and/or the setting of any Sacramental dates. (Thus, someone registering today would be attending the November Prep session, not the August session….followed by another call after the session to schedule a date for their child’s reception of Sacraments….not register and schedule at the same time.)
Our next Sacramental Preparation Session for families of children desiring First Reconciliation and First Eucharist here at Corpus Christi is scheduled for Saturday, August 21st at 2:30 p.m., concluding with the 5:00 p.m. Mass. Please note that participation at one of our quarterly Sacramental Prep Sessions prior to scheduling a First Reconciliation and First Eucharist is a parish requirement. You will receive your Sacramental Registration Form at the conclusion of the session. This policy is binding for ALL families, both those who have multiple children (who may have already received one or more First Eucharists, fresh attendance at the Sacramental Prep for each child is necessary) and for those approaching the Sacraments for the first time. Pre-registration is necessary (no drop-ins), please contact Susie Hays at 389-9008 to receive the necessary paperwork.
It is important to note that these Sacramental Preparation Sessions augment but DO NOT replace our parish policy of parents teaching their own children the essentials of our faith and introducing their own children to the person of Jesus Christ. These Prep Sessions are final steps to ensure that parental education has indeed been happening.
Our FIRSt La Cena is now history…but the NEXT one is only 4 weeks away!
The task of re-invention, of constantly creating fresh experiences and opportunities to bring our community together, is never-ending. Over the years our major fund-raisers have been Dinner Dances, Proms, Galas and Wine and Food Festivals. We have gone from a tent at the AV Golf Course to the local Holiday Inn to SOKA University to hosting within our own Grand Hall. Almost 450 people came out this weekend for our first ‘La Cena’ (Lah…Chain…Ahhhh) of the summer. Stripped of all the confusing add-ons that can sometimes clutter an event, La Cena is a California version of the Tuscan village communal meal of Summer celebration. No auctions or raffles, no assigned seating or speeches or presentations….just our Corpus Christi family taking pleasure in each other’s company The evening is designed for casual conversations accompanied by ample food, wine, beverage, song and dance. ‘La Cena’ is all about our famiglia sharing table space, passing bowls of pasta and sizzling platters of sausage, breaking bread with one another and sharing famiglia stories along with favorite appetizers and desserts. Our SECOND (and last) La Cena, Saturday, August 14th, will be identical to this weekends’ , kicking-off immediately after the 5:00 p.m. Mass. Please note that while a Good Shepherd supervised movie will be available for the bambinos downstairs, there will not be any organized activities for children…they are welcome to romp and improvise their play as village children are known to do. ‘La Cena’ participants are asked to bring their own appetizers with which to make new friends as well as a dessert for sharing….and bragging! Wine and summer cocktails will be available for purchase but participants are encouraged to bring their own favorite vino, or non-alcoholic beverage with which to quench summer thirsts. Our two ‘La Cena’ evenings/meals are the primary parish fund-raising events benefiting the Building Fund. Mindful of tight budgets, each evening of ‘La Cena’ is a modest $25 per adult (15 and up), $15 for children (10-14) and only $10 for bambinos (2-10), infants under 2 are free. Please complete the Reservation Form available on the Concierge Shelves. If you missed this weekend….see you on August 14th!!!
Networking and Employment Transition Support (NETS) Ministry presents ‘LINKEDIN’
Are you looking for a job and experiencing difficulty finding the right employer? Or, are you an employer who is looking for the right person but can’t find them? We are now living in the age of technology when knowing a few key elements can make all the difference in attaining your job search goals. NETS Ministry is excited to introduce technology expert, Brian Manahan, who will present: “How to Find a Job Using Today’s Best Networking Technology”, held on Thursday, July 22, 2010 at 7:30 p.m. Brian will provide a hands-on, step by step training on Linkedin that will get you well on your way to making the right connections. Linkedin is the premier technological venue where employers and job seekers find each other. Used properly, it is networking at its best and it is one of the key paths to achieving your goals. Please bring your own laptop computer and join us as you take a step up in your job search. The NETS team will be on hand to assist you during the training. As space will be limited, you will need to reserve a spot. Please RSVP by contacting Ed Jordan at ejordan@noletspirits.com or 949-389-1715.
Thanks to all who staffed the La Cena reservation booth last weekend…especially our ‘Costco sample’ sausage cookers! You’re the best!!
Next weekend, July 24-25, we will have a guest speaker at all the masses offering the annual mission appeal for the church’s many-faceted missionary activities throughout the world. Foundation for Children in Need is a Catholic lay organization based in Arlington Heights , Illinois . Dr. Geetha Yeruva, co-founder of this Foundation will be sharing about their mission work in the interior villages in the Southern part of India . FCN sponsors 2000 children and 50 elderly. This Foundation has been responsible for building several schools, boarding homes, a community health center and a home for the elderly. They have been providing free medical check-ups and medicine to thousands of needy people and children. We welcome Dr. Geetha and as always, the basket will be available on the altar for your consideration.
Anymore than ‘one size fits all’ in clothing, it usually doesn’t work within a parish community either…
Thus, most healthy parishes have a variety of options, programs and events, which collectively touch a large swath of the parish but whose individual memberships may not overlap each other’s rosters. When any particular ministry or outreach is experiencing a downward slide in participation it is a good time to pause and get a reading on the relevance, importance and viability of the effort. So it is with our Heartprints Ministry. Established long ago by MaryAnne O’Brien as an outreach to the women of our then fledgling parish, Heartprints has experienced a spiraling struggle of late, manifested by declining participation and questioning their vision and ‘target audience.’ While unsettling, this is an opportunity for Corpus Christi to convene a series of late-summer/early autumn sessions whereby we can discuss the potential and direction for assorted parish outreaches to the women of our community. The Bulletin will be the primary vehicle for inviting interested persons to these ‘discussion sessions’ but for the time-being you will not be hearing much about Heartprints as it enters into a ‘hiatus’ from active outreach. This is an FYI to keep you in the loop.
Food collection for South County Food bank next weekend…
The months tend to fly….and while it seems like just yesterday that we were collecting food for the South County Outreach Food bank….it actually was a month ago….and next weekend is the last weekend in July…meaning it will be our opportunity to once again provide some non-perishable food items for our brothers and sisters here in South County. Please bring your items and drop them off in the special hamper that will be on the courtyard. Thanks.

With summertime in full swing, don’t forget to avail of our SCRIP booth to stock up on SCRIP ‘gift-cards’ for all your summer supplies. SCRIP essentially is a transfer of your cash, check or credit card for the exact same amount in gift cards from local grocery stores, restaurants and shops. How SCRIP works is that we receive a few pennies on each dollar exchanged….and while each individual sale is pretty miniscule, with hundreds (possibly thousands) of people using it…the POTENTIAL is HUGE! Another avenue is to ensure that your GROCERY AFFINITY cards are enrolled, thus, every time you use your affinity card we are automatically credited. SCRIP costs nothing to use but generates a steady stream of revenue for ou9r Building Fund. Are you using it? Have you enrolled your AFFINITY cards?
Our POPs ministry (dads with their kids) is heading to an Anaheim Angels versus the Texas Rangers game
on July 31: Game Time: 6:05 pm.; Tailgate Time: 4:30 pm. Tickets are $16 with an additional $5 if you want to come early for the ‘Tailgater’ of hot dogs, potato salad and soft drinks. We have 30 tickets to start; dads can buy these tickets or buy their own, but still participate in the tailgater for $5. Reservation forms are available on the Concierge Shelves.
We always have room for more family/individual photos on our FAMILY PICTURE WALL….
Are you NEW to our parish community (or just have never gotten around to it) and wondering how you can get a picture of your smiling face up on our Grand Hall wall? It’s easy…just drop off a 5X7 photo of yourself in the Stewardship/Offertory collection or via USPS mail…and we will happily add YOU to the pics of our parish family. Come on…be a part of the famigila…send us a picture!

Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Deuteronomy 30:10-14 Colossians 1:15-20 Luke 10:25-37
Now that the smoke has cleared from last week’s celebrations, ready for some more shock and awe? Jesus was not Roman Catholic! Also….Jesus was not an American citizen! Neither were Mary or Joseph, or God the Father or the Holy Spirit or any of the evangelists or composers of Scripture.
Obvious, right? Well, not always so obvious to some who like to overlap God and country on their sleeve as if the American way is God’s way…and God’s way must obviously be the American way. (In truth, this was part of the early discrimination and distrust about and toward ROMAN Catholicism in the United States….the Pope was based in Rome and not an American!)
Recognizing that our culture is quick to label those with whom we disagree, these sorts of musings run the risk of being labeled red-state/blue-state stuff or even the dreaded designation of being ‘Left or Right’…and once the label is attached it provides the labeler with plausible justification to ignore the conversation! Not wanting to disrupt the domestic tranquility amidst our congregation…still, the question hangs in the air….how do we go about being people of compassionate faith in the midst of so much insistence on viewing life through nationalistic glasses?
A few years back we had some parishioners leave the parish because they found out that papers were not being checked and some of the ‘homeless’ being fed by our Hands Across the County ‘might’ be illegal immigrants. In today’s Gospel story of the Good Samaritan, Jesus goes to great length to craft a parable in which the main characters are political/cultural opposites, Jewish and Samaritan….(read right-wing militia member versus illegal immigrant.) The individual with whom Jesus is speaking is seeking justification to limit his love of God to his own individualistic read of the Jewish law…and tries to weasel wiggle room for himself by pushing the question of ‘who is my neighbor that I am supposed to love as myself?’
Throughout our American experience, whenever we have been in turmoil or economic upheaval, the voices of fiery discord get raised, pointing the verbal finger at supposed culprits. The Chinese brought over to build the railroads became the perceived stigma for a while. The Italians, Poles, Irish and Germans had derogatory nicknames attached to them, were disenfranchised…and were the reason the Parochial School System got started by Elizabeth Ann Seton. In recent years the Vietnamese migration following the war was seen as poisoning our culture and now the ‘illegal Hispanic’ is the target of the finger-pointers. In wrestling with the assorted issues of immigration, education, taxes, health care, etc. etc. how do we balance our approach to be both American and Roman Catholic?
Do we ignore one or the other so as to make our choices easier? Granted, not quick and easily resolvable issues…but worthy of consideration in light of the Good Samaritan parable. Oh yeah…one final thought….all those folk that are always pointing fingers at different groups and saying that we ‘Americans’ should be afraid of them….hmmm….wasn’t it Jesus who continually told people: ‘Be not afraid.?’ To which voice do we give more credence?
Thank you for joining with our Corpus Christi Community on this summer weekend. The team for La Cena is outside after all our Masses this weekend selling reservations for the summer’s FIRST LA CENA SUPPER next Saturday evening. Please make sure you make your reservation so we can have a place set for you at the tables! The Bulletin has news of other parish events coming up…especially our POPs Angel Game happening in a few weeks. Please take a copy of the Bulletin with you….thanks. As you settle into the rituals of summer, remember, use SPF at the beach, cook your chicken thoroughly, avoid cross-contaminating food…and always, remember that you are loved. FKB

BIOGRAPHY
Take the poetic lyricism of Paul Simon, mix in the vocal timbre of Sinead O'Connor, and throw in the unbridled power of Tori Amos, and you have Melissa Cox.
Melissa Cox's lyrical style is a throwback to the days of classic rock and the songwriters of the 60s and 70s, when lyrics were poetry unto themselves and windows into the songwriter's soul. She blends this part-metaphorical, part-storytelling writing style with her own musical elixir of rock, New Folk, progressive, alternative & World.
While most songwriters opt for a guitar these days, Melissa is fearless on the mandolin--a tribute to her Celtic roots & mainstream musicians who used the instrument and influenced Melissa (i.e. Led Zeppelin, Goo Goo Dolls, REM).
Melissa also plays acoustic and electric guitars and the djembe.
Melissa began studying classical music at age six. At 14 she picked up the guitar. Two weeks later, she wrote her first serious song, and a year later she recorded her first CD. Since then, she has released three more albums, shared the stage with many national and international artists, including Spin Doctors, Sister Hazel, Tom Chapin, Black 47, Celtic Crossroads & many others, and appeared at some of the largest and most prestigious venues and festivals in the country.
Melissa is dedicated to enacting change through her music. She performs at UU Churches across the country, and has raised money for several charities and initiatives, including Easter Seals, the Girl Scouts, Haiti Earthquake Relief, the Rainforest Alliance , and a variety of locally-based animal, pet, environmental and community organizations.

Our famiglia is gathering for ‘La Cena’ ….in TWO weeks!!!
On two Summer Saturday evenings, July 17th and August 14th. the famiglia of Corpus Christi will gather alfresco on our lawn to fill the night with food, beverage, song and dance. On two balmy Summer nights our parish will gather, as Tuscan villagers have gathered for centuries, to celebrate the familial bonds that weave us together. ‘La Cena’ (Lah…Chain…Ahhhh) is the communal meal of Summer celebration, of taking pleasure in each other’s company, of languorous conversations accompanied by ample food, wine, beverage, song and dance. ‘La Cena’ is all about our famiglia sharing table space, passing bowls of pasta and sizzling platters of sausage, breaking bread with one another and sharing famiglia stories along with favorite appetizers and desserts. Commencing immediately following the 5:00 p.m. Mass, ‘La Cena’ will feature full evenings focused on the leisurely meal and those who gather to enjoy it. While a movie will be available for the bambinos downstairs, there will not be any organized activities for children…they are welcome to romp and improvise their play as village children are known to do. ‘La Cena’ participants are asked to bring their own appetizers with which to make new friends as well as a desert for sharing….and bragging! Wine and summer cocktails will be available for purchase but participants are encouraged to bring their own favorite vino with which to quench summer thirsts. Replacing both the former ‘Summer Experience’ and the ‘Wine and Food Festival’, the two opportunities of ‘La Cena’ are the primary parish fund-raising events benefiting the Building Fund. Mindful of tight budgets, each evening of ‘La Cena’ is a modest $25 per adult (15 and up), $15 for children (10-14) and only $10 for bambinos (2-10), infants under 2 are free. To ensure adequate table space on our lawn, please complete the Reservation Form available on the Concierge Shelves and return it to the Parish Offices via USPS (27231 Aliso Viejo Parkway, AV, CA 92656) or via the weekly Stewardship/Offertory Collection. A special La Cena Booth will be up and available for hands on purchase of your reservations NEXT weekend after all the Masses.
A Parish Registration starts every conversation. Are you Registered?
Not a week goes by when we do not have a whole bunch of inquiries to our Parish Offices about Baptisms, First Communions, Marriages, etc….and it can end up being a disappointment to those who have NOT taken the time to become Registered (and participating) Parishioners. Our policy is that conversations about Sacramental plans can ONLY begin AFTER a person has been Registered and Participating within the parish for a minimum of three months (some parishes require six months of participation…in comparison we are pretty generous!) So, please, this is a gentle reminder of the importance of getting Registered…not to mention if you leave your purse, wallet or camera in the Grand Hall, it would be nice to be able to contact you! Registration Forms are available on the Concierge Shelves.
With summer vacations, misplaced Stewardship envelopes….if you are looking for a possible way to simplify your Weekly/Monthly Stewardship/Offertory support of Corpus Christi you may wish to join a growing group of parishioners who simply enroll their VISA or MasterCard with OUR Parish Office for monthly billing. You tell us how much you wish charged to your card, your information stays in OUR Office, we do not have an agency do the inputting of information, you get a handy record of your donations for IRS purposes…and you gain valuable points if you are enrolled in one of their Reward programs. If interested, please just give a call to Susie Hays at 389-9008 for more information or to get started.

Not only does our weekly effort at selling SCRIP provide a regular contribution to our Building Fund, it provides an opportunity for those who sell Scrip to meet and converse with those purchasing it….in other words…it expands the world of those helping sell SCRIP. Our SCRIP ministry is in need of additional volunteers to help staff the table before and following the regular weekend Masses. All volunteers, like every other ministry, will be required to be fingerprinted (at parish cost) and complete the Safe Environment Training internet program. So…if you are looking for a fairly benign way in which to help the parish, are reliable and regular in your Mass attendance (not to mention trustworthy and with no criminal record)…please give a call to Betsy or Gary Kessler at 389-9008….or drop by the SCRIP table and leave your name and contact information with the sellers. Fresh faces…and loving farewells…Pastoral Council changes….
We said it a few months ago but with the arrival of July it marks a transition within our Pastoral Council of four members. Our deepest gratitude and appreciation go out to Kevin Trout, Jan Kwok, Lisa Aguirre and Georgina Yacap for their past four years of service on the PC. Thanks for the sacrifice of time and the gift of your wisdom and insight you have so freely offered over these past four years. As of July 1st we welcome our newest members: Chris Watson, John Brady, Jeannie Conklin and Janet Cheetham to the Council and we ask God’s blessings upon them as they embrace fresh four-year terms. Corpus Christi has been strengthened and graced with the involvement of those who have, are and will serve on our Pastoral Council…in your generosity of spirit, please convey your appreciation to them when you encounter them! Thanks.
Please remember, the Parish Offices are closed this Monday, July 5th. Thanks.

If men are clearly from Mars and women are truly from Venus as the famous book asserts, how are we different or similar in our expressions of faith? This is the topic of what will be a lively discussion on Saturday, July 10 when Heartprints and First Saturday Men’s Fellowship join together. Breakfast starts at 8 a.m. in the Lower Hall but as always, all women and men are welcome to start early with breakfast preparation and faith sharing at 6 a.m. All women and men of the parish should not miss this eye-opening conversation for a Saturday morning.
Our thanks, as always, to Chris Mackey for coordinating and shepherding our most recent Corpus Christi Diner’s Night at Stadium Brewery…and thanks to all those who came out and enjoyed the evening while helping our Building Fund.

Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time USA 234th Birthday!
Isaiah 66:10-14 Galatians 6:14-18 Luke 10:1-20
One or two people can do very little by themselves but when one or two raise their voices and speak out, others begin to listen. One by one and two by two something small begins to grow and what was once small and forgettable becomes a force with which to be reckoned. In the building of a great bridge or a splendid structure…someone has the initial idea and raises the concept….others start to imagine it….imagination catches fire amongst more and more people…and the idea of bridges and splendid structures become real…not by the labor of one person…but through the efforts of many.
In this weekend’s Gospel we hear of Jesus sending out his disciples as ‘evangelists’ of his message. He gives them some rudimentary instructions and we hear of their excitement at their efforts and results. In Galatians we have a powerful statement by Paul about the meaningless of ‘external signs’ when it comes to depth of meaning and commitment, rather, Paul directs us to the ‘new creation-new concept’ we become in Christ.
It is an apt thought by which to jump into all things Fourth of July. While the media will flash images of our splendiferous structures, national shrines and natural wonders, while Old Glory will be featured prominently (as it is on our elevator tower)…the Fourth of July is more a testimony to what people can do when they get their minds and souls around an idea. On Independence Day, we are encouraged to look beyond just the national barbeque and picnic and consider what happens when compromise and commitment walk hand in hand with dedication and sacrifice.
The IDEA of the United States was born not so much from a clear understanding of what the original signers of the Declaration of Independence knew they wanted…but what they knew they did NOT want. Who we are today (and who we will be tomorrow) is the result of thousands, millions, of voices being raised in discussion, sometimes passionately, about what defines us. That we can be united as individual states is remarkable. That we can wrangle, fight, bloody each other…and still pull together is remarkable. E Pluribus Unum, out of many, one.
From one, something strong and grand….be it a splendid structure, a bridge, the Church, the Body of Christ, made up of billions of parts…or the United States, 234 years young…and made up of 300 million parts..and growing! Remarkable what we can do when we set our minds and hearts to something….even more remarkable what we can accomplish when God is woven within our endeavors.
Thank you for joining with us as we celebrate and honor our 234th birthday, may your celebrations be safe and satisfying. Our La Cena Dinner is TWO weeks away…make sure oyu make your reservation NOW. Please take a Bulletin with you with news of others things coming up in the weeks ahead, it might be summer, but we don’t slow down. Last call…….do you (or your child) desire to become Roman Catholic next Easter?
Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults and Rite of Christian Initiation Adapted for Children/Teens
With the Easter season behind us, you may recall that the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults is the Church-approved manner by which adults who are either not baptized or have been baptized into another Christian denomination are sacramentally received and welcomed into the Roman Catholic Church through the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation) or if already baptized in another Christian denomination, through a Profession of Faith. For children/teens ages 7-17, the same Rite is adapted to be age appropriate but remains the universal manner for being received and welcomed into the Roman Catholic Church. Reception into the Church through Baptism or Profession of Faith for children, teens or adults occurs on Holy Saturday during the Easter Vigil Liturgy, April 23, 2011. The preparation process for adults, teens or children who would like to be received into the Church at Easter, 2011, will be getting underway in early summer. Those who would like to participate, and are presently Registered members of Corpus Christi parish, are asked to contact Susie Hays at 389-9008, so that the necessary pre-enrollment paperwork can be assembled. Thanks.
Ever so slowly, we are at 14 scholarships so far… and 13 youth still hoping for your generosity!
The 2010 Youth Leadership Summit will be held August 16 - 20th at the Irvine Outdoor Education Center, a new one-of-a-kind facility located adjacent to Irvine Regional Park. High school students, who have been selected as Corpus Christi Youth leaders, will spend the week learning and practicing skills such as small group facilitation, peer helping, large group presenting, and more while exploring their faith and talents. They will also participate in teambuilding activities, including a ropes challenge course. The Youth Leadership Summit is just the beginning though, as Youth Leaders will serve the parish throughout the year as volunteers in our JAMS middle school youth ministry, in HAVEN high school youth ministry, at parish special events, and more. while continuing to build their leadership skills. The cost for each youth to attend the summit is $400.00 including lodging, food, activities, and supplies. Can you help sponsor/partially sponsor one of our youth? If so, please send your check to Fr. Fred…. THANK YOU!!! Thank you!!! Thank You!!! Thank You!!! Thank You!!! Thank You!!!
Our famiglia is gathering for ‘La Cena’ ….
Now that the graduations are pretty much over how about celebrating and getting into the swing of summer by getting out of the house….and coming on down to Stadium Brewing in Town Center THIS Thursday, June 24th from 5pm to 8pm for our next Corpus Christi Diner’s Night! Mark your calendars…and bring the coupon inserted in this Bulletin. Thanks!
Happy Father’s Day Weekend!!!
Next weekend, June 26-27, the basket will be placed on the altar for your consideration of the Universal Church Collection, frequently called ‘Peter’s Pence’. This special collection combines Peter’s Pence with Catholic Relief Services Collection. CRS assists the poor and disadvantages by alleviating human suffering, promoting development of all people and fostering charity and justice internationally. Peter’s Pence promotes and supports the works of our Holy Father, enabling him to respond with emergency financial assistance to those who suffer as a result of war, oppression and natural disasters throughout the world. As always, your generosity is appreciated. Thanks.
Please note that our next collection of food for South County Outreach is NEXT weekend, June 26-27. Please bring your non-perishable food items with you and deposit them in the special hamper that will be on the courtyard. South County Outreach continues to be EXCEEDINGLY grateful for our faithful gifting of food for the past year…so don’t forget….in two weeks, we get to help our neighbors have a little more on their tables. THANKS!
A HUGE Thank You to all the men, women and munchkins who came out last weekend for our SPRING CLEANING. Windows were scrubbed the kitchen cleaned of four years worth of baked on grime, floor cracks scrapped and vacuumed, bronze polished, weeds pulled, tree limbs trimmed, concrete power-washed, tables sanded and washed, chairs cleaned of gum….all in all, a wonderful sacrifice by those who came out. THANK YOU EVRYT, VERY much to each and every one of you…especially the kids who ate the most massive 3-patty burgers the civilized world has ever seen!!! Special thanks to Marc and Maribeth for organizing and coordinating the morning.
Corpus Christi’s Cub Scout pack 700 is planning to have an exhibition of their brand new Pack 700 Pinewood Derby Track on June 26th in our Lower Hall. It is the 'granddaddy' of pinewood derby tracks and the boys are very proud of having earned every bit of the nearly $5000 that it cost to buy. The PWD race is a highlight of our program and is a lot of fun!! For more information about our Cub Scout Pack, please give a call to Frances Outhwait at 933-9904. Thanks.

Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Father’s Day Weekend
Zechariah 12:10-13:1 Galatians 3:26-29 Luke 9:18-24
When you were younger, what did you want to be when you grew up? An astronaut? A business entrepreneur? A scientist? A computer wiz? A racecar driver or mechanic? How doe those long-ago desires match up to reality? What have you ended up selecting as a life pursuit? If people talk about you (and people always talk!!!!) how do they describe you: Ed the mechanic, Susie the hygienist, Tom the banker, etc.?
When people describe you as simply your occupation, do you ever feel cheated, shorted regarding the fullness of who you are? While our occupations provide the funding by which we live, save and insure our well being, are we not all much more than just what we do professionally ? In addition to our jobs are we not somebody’s son or daughter, perhaps somebody’s wife or husband, a brother, sister, a companion or significant other, a friend, a fiancé, a buddy or homie?
It is rare if these assorted roles and descriptions do not overlap and weave themselves into a unique patchwork of identity for each of us. In the same way, this weekend we hear Jesus inquiring of his disciple’s how the community perceives him? They respond by sharing the lofty expressions of respect in which Jesus is held…so high that people think he might be John the Baptist returned from the dead, or Elijah or one of their revered prophetic figures from of old.
Jesus then shifts focus and inquires of his disciples who THEY thought he was…keeping in mind that these are the people who have traveled with him and become very aware of his complexities and hidden persona. Probably without being fully aware of the depth of his statement, Peter blurts out: ‘The Christ of God!’ Bravo Peter….too bad it took so long for that truth to sink in (let’s not forget the misunderstandings of Jesus’ impending crucifixion, the failing to trust when walking on water, the betrayals, etc.) On this Father’s Day weekend, the same question is put to us: who do WE say that Jesus is? A quaint historic figure? A mythological imaginary figure? A dismissible religious zealot? Or….might Jesus truly be what he elusively claimed: The Son of God?
How do we view Jesus? Based on that view, what kind of relationship have we with him?? Do we actually have a relationship with Jesus? What do we want from that relationship? What are we willing to do for that relationship? Hmmm, thinking back to when we were kids….who did we think Jesus was back then? Have our views changed? How, when, why? Some interesting questions to help fill the loooooongest day and shortest night as we pass through the Summer Solstice!
Thank you for joining with our Corpus Christi Catholic-Christian Community during these last fleeting hours of Spring and initiating the fresh season of Summer. With this being Father’s Day weekend we acknowledge the men who have nurtured us, fathered us, mentored us, protected and educated us….be they our biological dads or the men who have stepped up to the plate in times of necessity; Happy Father’s Day guys!!!
Next weekend will be our food collection for South County Outreach, please bring your non-perishable food items with you and deposit them in the hamper on the courtyard…thanks. Please check the Bulletin for other news of events coming up, the Teen Theater Camp still has openings (the kid’s week is maxed out), our La Cena Summer suppers, the POPs baseball game outing…and more and more. In ancient cultures dwelling in the Northern Hemisphere, people would light giant bonfires by which to celebrate the summer solstice, holding the impending darkness at bay as long as possible.
Perhaps a beach bonfire or backyard fire pit experience is appropriate for this Solstice weekend? In any case, relish the light, relish the warmth and languorous days of summer that start to unfold…and remember, you are loved. FKB
Vacation Bible School Helps Students Find God In Their Daily Lives - July 26-30
(Laguna Niguel, CA) - "Where in the World is God?" is the theme for the sixth annual Vacation Bible School (VBS) hosted by First Church of Christ, Scientist, Laguna Niguel in their Sunday School. Open to the entire community, this year's VBS will be July 26-30.
This year's theme is based on a passage from Luke, "Some Pharisees asked Jesus when God's kingdom would come. He answered, "God's kingdom isn't something you can see. There is no use saying, `Look! Here it is' or `Look! There it is.' God's kingdom is here with you." (Contemporary English Version)
"Every day our students will hear about Bible characters in reference to the theme as it applies to their lives at home, school, activities and the environment," explains Anne Cooling, VBS Director, "and then we plan activities to help teach what the Bible stories mean through singing, crafts and games. Snacks and fellowship are also always a big success with the children."
Registration forms are available in the Christian Science Reading Room, located on the church property at 29012 Aloma Avenue, Laguna Niguel or online at the church's website, www.cschurchln.org. The school caters to young children, ages 3 1/2 to sixth grade, with older children encouraged to be Junior Leaders. Each session runs from 9am through noon.
"Every year, we feel so blessed with all the good that comes from this experience," added Cooling. "Our Mission Statement says it all, 'To provide an annual opportunity for the children in our community to learn the joyous spiritual application of the Bible'."

11th Anniversary of Corpus Christi Catholic-Christian Community - Worship Aid Doc. June 5-6, 2010.
June 5-6, 2010
The Solemnity of the Most holy Body and Blood of Corpus Christi
June 6, 2010 - 11th Anniversary of Corpus Christi Catholic-Christian Community - June 6, 1999
Genesis 14:18-20 First Corinthians 11:23-26 Luke 9:11-17
If our parish were a human child, we would be in the fifth grade, not yet able to vote and nowhere close to being of legal age. But in ‘parish years’ (something similar to ‘dog years’) we are a proven entity and stand securely amidst the many older parish communities surrounding us. Bearing the sacred name of ‘Corpus Christi’ (Latin for The Body and Blood of Christ,) on this, our 11th Anniversary, we pause to consider exactly how we are sacred nourishment both to our own family and to the community in which we exist. Most certainly we celebrate our liturgical times of prayer with intentionality and joy. When it all comes together, the smiles of our Hospitality Ministers meld with the music which invites the community to pray and sing, which leads to the Scriptures being proclaimed, which sets the stage for the great gift of Eucharist to be offered by which our family is physically fed the best of food, which brings the festive meal we call Mass to an end as we are sent back out into our work-a-day world. Our celebration of Mass, as central to our life as the Altar is within our Grand Hall, is but one manner by which we nourish each other and our community. Our ‘Hands Across the County’ feed the homeless weekly, they bring food and personal hygiene items to Isaiah House for families in need and oversee the monthly food collection for South County Outreach. ‘Hands’ also shows our compassionate face to the school children of our Sister Parish, St. Polycarp, by supplying them with new back packs and school supplies…while also participating with the purchasing of shoes for the ‘Motel Kids’ and even helping to fund bus transportation for the homeless children dwelling in motels so they can achieve a basic education and stay off the streets. This same richness of service is present in each of our ministries and outreaches; each group, in providing some service, nourishes the faith-lives of those who participate. From Mops to Pops, from First Saturday Men’s Fellowship to Heartprints and Book Club and HAVEN and Jams to FISH and Adult Faith Formation Scripture Studies to our boy/girl Scouts to Music to our Liturgical ministries of Lector and Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion and hospitality to the Holy Refreshments being offered after Mass to the labors of love offered by our Maintenance Ministers to all the myriad ways in which our family takes ownership for being who we are. We have come a very long way from those first Masses at St. Oak Grove Elementary School…but we are still young, vibrant and growing. Most of our life lies before us, inclusive of generations that will look back on us and wonder at the courage of such a community that would dare to become The Body and Blood of Christ for Aliso Viejo….and beyond! Congratulations…and Happy 11th Anniversary!
In years past we endeavored to have a single Mass by which our Community could come together and see who we were becoming…but, with our increasing size that became unmanageable. So, rather than one BIG Mass with one BIG reception…we have our FOUR regular Masses, with four BIG receptions following each one…and you are invited to enjoy some food and beverage in celebration of the day. Please take a Bulletin with you as you journey home. Our summer months have lots going on, including our BIG ‘La Cena’ Dinners (registration forms were made available last weekend and are on the Concierge Shelves) and the Children/Teen Theater Camp being offered by Faith Formation for Children and Families. Father’s Day is in two weeks, special card by which to enroll your dads, living or deceased, in the special series of Masses are also on the Concierge Shelves. Also, next Saturday is our BIG parish Spring Cleaning…come on down and help…the Bulletin has more info. On this, our Anniversary…remember…just as it has been said 52+ times a year for the past 11 years, you are loved…MUCH! FKB
LDS News - Replica of LDS Temple Now In SLC Visitors Center / Eco-Friendly Stake Center Setting A New Green Standard
Scaled Model Provides Salt Lake Temple Open House Experience
More than a century has passed since the public open house was held for the Salt Lake Temple, but an exhibit featuring a 1:32 scaled replica of the Mormon temple opened this month that offers an open house experience of the magnificent building. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints unveiled the 88-inch tall, near-identical replica of the temple in the South Visitors’ Center on Temple Square. The permanent exhibit will be open to the public.
“This replica will show the millions of visitors who come to Temple Square the beauty and majesty of this sacred and historic building,” said Elder Richard G. Hinckley, executive director of the Missionary Department. “Like all temples, once the building is dedicated it is used for sacred Church purposes and not open to the general public, but this exhibit will provide the public with a glimpse of the interior and a feeling of the Spirit that is present there.”
The Salt Lake Temple is a landmark known throughout the world. When it was last open to the public in April of 1893, the local press reported that approximately 5,000 people, most of whom were not members of the Church, toured the temple before the dedication. The reports went on to say that “altogether the richness and elegant workmanship of the temple was a revelation of wonder to the visitors.”
Extensive open houses have been held prior to the dedication of newly constructed temples throughout the world and allow visitors to walk through and experience the sacred structures. Once dedicated, temples are in continual, even daily, use by members of the Church for religious purposes. While public open houses for new temples regularly draw tens and even hundreds of thousands of people, millions will likely see this model of the Salt Lake Temple over its lifetime.
“Many people think our temples are like great halls or cathedrals. Actually, they have a number of rooms designed for certain functions such as marriages, baptisms and instructional sessions,” said Elder William R. Walker, executive director of the Church’s Temple Department.
The model of the Salt Lake Temple sits in front of a giant window in the South Visitors’ Center facing the actual building that it replicates. The south and east walls of the replica have been cut away to show depictions of many of the rooms in the temple, including the large assembly hall and rooms where the First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve Apostles meet.
The baptistery and other ordinance rooms are also depicted. Close attention is paid to detail, and even paintings, furniture and working chandeliers and lamps imitate those found in the actual temple.
Peter McCann Architectural Models of Toronto was commissioned to create the replica last August. Sixteen modelers with different expertise in various parts of the duplication process worked on the project for five months.
“Some of the detail is so fine that we had to find people that were capable of doing it at that scale,” said Josh Coulas, manager of the project for Peter McCann Architectural Models.
In addition to the scaled model, the new display in the South Visitors’ Center features new kiosks that show high-definition photos and video of the Salt Lake Temple interior rooms. A narrator gives an explanation of the purpose of the rooms and a diagram shows where they are located on the model. The presentation is very similar to what a person would experience during the public open house of a temple.
“This new display will give people another reason to visit Temple Square for the first time or for the hundredth time,” said Elder Hinckley. “Because of its history and spiritual significance, this temple is beloved by millions and recognized as an icon of Mormonism throughout the world.”
Brigham Young designated the location for the Salt Lake Temple just days after the first group of pioneers came into the Salt Lake Valley. Construction began on the building in 1853 and was completed in 1893.
More than just a structure with a beautiful and functional design, the temple was central to the faith of the pioneers who settled the Salt Lake Valley. Latter-day Saint temples are considered houses of God, a place of holiness and peace separate from the preoccupations of the world. They provide a place where Church members make formal promises and commitments to God. They are also the place where the highest sacraments of the faith occur — the marriage of couples and the “sealing” of families for eternity.
Anyone, regardless of religion, may enter a Latter-day Saint meetinghouse and attend services. However, because of the sacredness of temples as “houses of the Lord,” only members of the Church who are in good standing are allowed to enter the temples. A member must be observing the basic principles of the faith and attest to that fact to his or her local leaders once every two years in order to enter a temple.
The Salt Lake Temple was the sixth temple built by the Church. Today there are 132 operating temples throughout the world.

Going 'Green' Not a Fad for LDS Church and Members
From 156 solar panels lining the roof of a Farmington, Utah meeting house, to the new LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design)-certified Church History Library in Salt Lake City, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is setting a “green” standard.
At the end of April, LDS church leaders unveiled a new eco-friendly stake center in Farmington, Utah.
“It’s about creating a place of worship that works in harmony with the environment,” said Bishop H. David Burton at the event where the designs were presented. “For decades we have looked for innovative ways to use natural resources in our meetinghouses that reflect our commitment as wise stewards of God’s creations.”
Outfitted with tank-less water heaters, energy efficient heating and cooling systems and motion-sensors to turn off lights when a room is not in use, the meeting house not only conserves energy but produces more than it uses with the help of solar panels affixed to the roof. Other features of the building include better insulation and a sprinkler system that uses underground sensors instead of a timer to determine water need. The Farmington meetinghouse achieved LEED-certification with its eco-friendly design, as did the new Church History Library in Salt Lake City that opened in June 2009.
Four other “green” meeting houses like the one in Farmington are being built: two in Nevada, one in Arizona and another in Utah. If the buildings prove successful, LDS leaders hope to build more churches that cut energy usage and cost and promote environmental consciousness. The Church is also considering that all existing meetinghouses be retrofitted with solar panels and other energy-conserving features. With 17,000 buildings already in operation throughout the world and 200 new ones built every year, LDS leaders are aware of the effect more “green” buildings could have.
These buildings are just part of a history the Church has in conservation; other efforts include a geothermal plant built in the 1980s to power a meetinghouse in California as well as rainwater conservation that has been practiced at Pacific Island meetinghouses since the 1950s.
While the Church does its part to conserve energy, individual members like Bryson Garbett are also making efforts to protect the environment through design and construction.
Garbett, president and CEO of Garbett Homes, jumped into construction at the age of 18, working with his brother as a framer. After serving a mission to Italy and graduating from the University of Utah in history, Garbett decided to stick with construction and started Garbett Homes. “It’s been almost 38 years now that I’ve been in construction and it’s all I know,” Garbett said.
Garbett’s company made the commitment to “green” at the end of 2008, when it was decided that all Garbett Homes would be or Energy Star certified, which means they are at least 15 percent more energy efficient than standard homes.
“We even have homes that go way beyond that,” Garbett said. “We provide homes now that we’re building in the Salt Lake Valley that have solar panels. … It reduces significantly what the operating expenses are.”
Garbett’s homes include multiple aspects that make them energy efficient, such as Low-E windows, which reflect summer’s high-angled sun rays and absorb winter’s low-angle rays. These changes came with “quite a bit of discussion and debate,” Garbett said, “because we have always done our building a certain way.”
However, three reasons tipped the scale for change. “Number one, I think we thought it was the right thing to do,” Garbett said. “And number two, we thought our buyers were ready for that. We sell to a lot of young couples and singles and they are very interested in buying products that are environmentally friendly and sustainable. We also wanted to set Garbett a little bit apart from other builders.”
The father of eight children and a newly called bishop, Garbett said he was “very pleased to hear” that the Church is taking advantage of energy conserving techniques because of the effect it has not only on the environment, but also on the ability to run meeting houses in parts of the world where power is more expensive.
“If it works here and they take it then to those places, it’ll help the members greatly in reducing the cost to operate our chapels,” Garbett said. “I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Church doing more innovative things than that.”

Do you (or your child) desire to become Roman Catholic in 2011?
Thanks.
We have crept to 10 scholarships so far… and 27 youth wanting to become tomorrow’ s leaders!

Once the graduations are over and summer officially is underway, what better way to get into the swing of summer than getting out of the house….and coming on down to Stadium Brewing in Town Center on Thursday, June 24th from 5pm to 8pm for our next Corpus Christi Diner’s Night! Mark your calendars…and look for the special coupon on the weekends beforehand. Thanks!

Also…just so you won’t be surprised, the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe and the kneelers from the Blessed Sacrament Chapel will be absent during the week…but being put to very good use in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel we set up at La Quinta…and for the Altar of Remembrance for our Diocesan priests to prayerfully remember their own beloved dead.

Do you (or your child) desire to become Roman Catholic in 2011?
Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults and Rite of Christian Initiation Adapted for Children/Teens
With the Easter season starting to wane, you may recall that the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults is the Church-approved manner by which adults who are either not baptized or have been baptized into another Christian denomination are sacramentally received and welcomed into the Roman Catholic Church through the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation) or if already baptized in another Christian denomination, through a Profession of Faith. Thanks.

Congratulations to Russ Abdulla, Vladimir Burce, Alex DeBarro, Emily Cecile Dinsmore, David Dluzak, Lindsay Mortenson, Brian Oltman, Noel Sturm, Brian Tabel, who took advantage of the yearly opportunity offered by Bishop Brown when he delegates Pastors to offer Sacrament of Confirmation in their own parish to adults in need.
A reminder, perhaps for next year, that while not being Confirmed does not prevent reception of Eucharist or Marriage or the Baptism of children….it does prevent a person from being a Sponsor at Confirmation…and in many parishes, prevents people from being Godparents at a Baptism. It really is a good thing of which to avail so that when somebody special asks you to be a Sponsor or Godparent….you can answer YES very quickly. Back to the brighter side…Congrats Russ, Vladimir, Alex, Emily, David, Lindsay, Brian, Noel and Brian….may the gifts of the Holy Spirit lift you to new heights and joys.
Next weekend, being the last weekend of the month, we will again collect non-perishable food items for the South County Food Bank. Thank you for your generosity in helping those who are stretching their budgets to get through these rough economic times.

While everyone born in the United States is entitled to certain ‘inalienable rights’…there are also a lot of privileges…not rights…that come with attainment of certain qualifications, standards or simply age. At 17 one can get a drivers license, at least in California. At 18, one can vote, sign contracts, be counted as an adult…and potentially be called upon for national military service…but probably still not be able to rent a car! At 21 one can legally purchase alcohol and not face legal issues if drinking normal amounts of the stuff. One is granted a diploma after completing the academic standards of High School or College, etc. etc.
Each of these accomplishments marks an important life transition for the individual. In the same way, Pentecost not only brings the Easter Season to a close, it commemorates the outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon this ethereal thing called ‘The Church’ that has enabled us to grow, mature and become self-aware throughout the centuries. With the creative, empowering yet mysterious gifts of the Holy Spirit the earliest disciples were able to go forth and speak of their relationship with Jesus of Nazareth, how they had come to recognize him as The Christ…and accept him as the physical/mystical presence of God amongst us. Corpus Christi Catholic-Christian Community exists precisely because of the graces of the Holy Spirit compelling people to add their energy, ideas and individual spirits so that our parish can grow and thrive. This weekend’s Ministry Fair is an opportunity for all of our family members to once again consider the responsibilities and pride of ownership. As it is said, ‘To those to whom much is given….much is expected.’ We are the beneficiaries of all those who have gone before us… in the bigger picture of the Church of the Diocese of Orange…and also of those who have struggled to create a parish where prior to 1999 one did not exist.
As we continue to grow and look toward an eventual completion of our permanent church we also build and develop the ministries and programs by which we are nourished and woven together as a family. How might YOU claim a more active and vital part within our ministries/groupings/outreaches? A parish IS NOT a spiritual gas station where we anonymously pull in, fill up and leave. A Parish IS a place where we encounter the LIVING PRESENCE of Jesus within each other…sometimes messy, sometimes exhilarating, sometimes sublime. The power and grace of Pentecost propels us not into isolation but into the challenges of human interactions with each other, with those who are not like us, with those who frighten us, with those who reject us and with those who will challenge the sincerity of our discipleship. It is time to draw close to the Pentecost flame, to catch fire, to come alive, to be renewed….to help transform the face of the earth…and a good manageable place to start is right here in our own backyard….Corpus Christi!
Thank you for sharing this weekend with us, please accept a Bulletin on your way home. As you arrived you had to take note of the assorted booths representing all of our parish groups, ministries and outreaches. After Mass, please take some time to meander and consider how you may wish to become more active within Corpus Christi. Please note that our parish policy is that all of our volunteers (and paid staff) will be fingerprinted (for which we pay) and must complete the Diocesan Safe Environment Program.
Also, some of the ministries, have particular Church mandated qualifications: such as those who serve as Eucharistic Ministers, if married, must be married within the CATHOLIC CHURCH. Next weekend we will commemorate those who have given their lives in sacrifice for our nation on Memorial Day weekend…and the week after that is our 11th Anniversary as the PARISH of Corpus Christi….we can still use some help with our champagne receptions following each Mass….please see the Bulletin for details. As the Pentecost fire energizes you, remember, you are loved. FKB

350 Mormons Mobilize to Renew Rancho Santa Margarita and Modjeska Canyon For Annual Community Day of Service
On May 8, hundreds of volunteers from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon) in Rancho Santa Margarita participated in the annual “Mormon Helping Hands Community Day of Service” as part as a Church effort across all of California. Statewide, it is estimated that 70,000 members, joined in this effort on May 8 that reached not only into community parks, but also into national forests, coastlines and desert regions.
The project was carried out under the direction of President Sterling Brennan of the Santa Margarita Stake. A stake is similar to a Catholic diocese, made up of about seven congregations. President Brennan said, “This has been a busy spring, and I am so grateful for those who helped organize the projects and especially to those volunteers who came and gave their hours of service on Saturday. The turn out always amazes me.”
The day of service covered four distinct projects in Rancho Santa Margarita and Modjeska Canyon. In Rancho Santa Margarita volunteers in bright yellow “Mormon Helping Hands” vests worked in connection with the city and Santa Margarita Landscape and Recreation Corporation (SAMLARC) to paint a retaining wall, dig out artichoke thistles at Canada Vista slope and distribute mulch at the Canada Vista Dog Park. Brian Mitchell of SAMLARC said, “We were thrilled when the LDS Church approached us asking about the needs of the city. We thought these three projects would really beautify and renew out community.”
100 of the 350 yellow-vested volunteers started their day at the Modjeska Canyon Fire Station. Bruce Newell, Senior Fire Officer, and Leslie Paskus of the Inter-Canyon League gave the team of volunteers guidelines and Poison Oak warnings before the hard day of work began. Before heading up the steep Olive Hill, Leslie Paskus expressed the canyon community’s gratitude to Mormon Helping Hands for their work during the wildfires and mud slides. Members of the community planned a full lunch, snacks, and water as a thank you for the day of service. Two little children from Modjeska Canyon, Synthia and Charlie Chapman, made 24 homemade cupcakes to distribute to the volunteers after their hot sweaty work was complete.
Hundreds of thousands of hours of community service were rendered on this special Mormon Helping Hands service day. Mormons in every community in California, working with park and civic officials, identified hundreds of projects in parks throughout California.

This past Easter we welcomed 29 adults, teens and children into the Church.
Do you (or your child) desire to become Roman Catholic in 2011?
Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults and
Rite of Christian Initiation Adapted for Children/Teens
With the Easter season starting to wane, you may recall that the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults is the Church-approved manner by which adults who are either not baptized or have been baptized into another Christian denomination are sacramentally received and welcomed into the Roman Catholic Church through the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation) or if already baptized in another Christian denomination, through a Profession of Faith.
Thanks.

Parishes and Schools in Need Special Collection coming…
You may have read in recent newspaper articles that a substantial number of central Orange County parishes and their parochial schools are experiencing severe financial distress (like this is news to any of our own families!) Not something new, this has been a growing problem over the years, sometimes due to the population shifts in cities, the exodus of people to the suburbs, etc. A number of years ago, the Diocese of Orange started a SPECIAL COLLECTION that would be 100% directed to aid these parishes and schools. The ‘Parishes and Schools in Need Collection will be accepted on Memorial Day Weekend, May 22-23. The needs to which these funds are directed are considered ‘essentials services’ (youth ministry, directors of religious education, business managers, capital repairs and maintenance essential for safety.)
Parishes requesting monies form this collection petition a Diocesan Board consisting of laity and clergy of the Diocese who then make recommendations to the Bishop. Your generosity, as always, is welcomed. Thanks
Please note that the recipient of our second $5,000 Corpus Christi College Scholarship will be announced at the 10:00 a.m. Mass on the Solemnity of Corpus Christi (our anniversary), June 7th . Our famiglia is gathering for ‘La Cena’ ….
LDS Day Of Service May 8th / New Web Site to Help Unemployed Find Work
Thousands of Orange County Mormons Will Mobilize May 8
To Renew Their Communities on the Annual Day of Service
On May 8, thousands of volunteers from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon) across Orange County will participate in the annual “Mormon Helping Hands Community Day of Service” planned for all of California. The volunteers, who are among more than 45,000 church members in the county, will focus on cleaning and/or renewing parks throughout the county alongside non-LDS friends. Statewide, it is estimated that 70,000 members, 8 years and older, will join in this effort on May 8th.
“Church members participate in numerous service projects throughout the year,” said Sterling Brennan, President of the Santa Margarita Stake, “but this year, on May 8, the Church has asked us to unite and help renew our communities, which is vital during these difficult times.”
Wearing bright yellow “Mormon Helping Hands” vests will work at three locations locally. About 50 volunteers will be working at Canada Vista Park, across from Tijeras Creek Golf Course, removing artichoke thistle plants and laying wood chips in the dog park. About 100+ volunteers will be repainting a wall bordering Santa Margarita Parkway. Samlarc will be removing all the plants the week before and the actual painting will be done on May 8th. About 60 volunteers will be at Modjeska Canyon clearing a creek drain and cleaning up dead trees and plants in cooperation with the Inter-Canyon League. All this will happen from about 8am until noon at each of the three locations.
Ken Gibson, Chair of Mormon Helping Hands in the Rancho Santa Margarita area, said, “The City of RSM as well as with Samlarc have expressed deep appreciation for our willingness to help. They are trying to promote volunteer efforts throughout the community and hope this day of service will encourage people to get involved.”
Church Launches New Web Site to Help Unemployed Find Work
LDS Newsroom With severe economic challenges affecting the nation and many parts of the world, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has established ldsjobs.org to assist people in the job market.
The new interactive Web site is designed for job seekers, regardless of religious denomination, to locate employment, increase or improve skills through education and start or refine a small business. All the services are free.
“One of the first things we find with many people who come into our employment centers is that they’ve lost hope,” says Rick Ebert, director of employment resource services for the Church. “They’re desperate. We try to give a person a sense of hope that there are possibilities for them; there are resources that can be made available to them.”
Currently, there are approximately 250,000 job listings, and 9,000 employers are signed on to the site, looking for the right candidates to fill openings.
Ebert says he sees this as a significant tool to assist local Church leaders in their responsibility to help members who are struggling to find employment or seeking to improve their careers. While the site has been launched in English, it will be available this year in Spanish and Portuguese, with plans to expand to other languages in the future.
When a person logs on the site, they will be invited to create a profile that includes their employment history, qualifications, education and skills. Rich Vunder, manager of Church employment resource services in northern Utah, says the exciting thing about the site is the control prospective employees have over their information. “It is a self-directed Web site. The better their profile is, the better their opportunities to connect with employers.”
LDSjobs.org is also a tremendous resource for employers. Employers can post job openings, review potential candidates, make contacts and even hire new employees based on Web site profiles. As an employer, Ebert explains, “I can literally go to the Web site, send an electronic message to the individual saying, ‘I have an interest in meeting with you.’ ” The Web site is the catalyst for bringing the prospective employer and employee together.
In New York, Joe Doria, manager of Church employment resource services, says he and his associates use the Web site in their work with many of the Fortune 1,000 companies. The site’s resources help potential employers meet staffing needs at senior executive levels.
LDSjobs.org can also be a resource for students and young adults looking for summer jobs. Julie Poole, manager of Church employment resource services in Dallas, Texas, says the Web site helps young people not only find a part-time job but plan a career. “It’s an incredible resource that supports Latter-day Saints and those of other faiths.”
The site includes information about schools, financial aid and programs that are available at technical and vocational schools as well public schools and private schools. In addition to specific job resources, ldsjobs.org also has a database of community resources to help those with disabilities, single parents and those who have health issues.
