Grand Re-Opening of Sea Country Center A Sweet Success! City Of LN
Candy bars, photo booths, candy cake-walks, dancing and the sweet sounds of rhythm and blues were all part of the fun and festivities that marked the Grand Re-opening of the Sea Country Senior and Community Center on May 8th.
City officials kicked off the event with a ribbon cutting ceremony celebrating the completion of the 10,000 square foot building expansion and renovation project.
The open-house and community party showcased the newly-renovated facility, community classes, senior programs and room rental opportunities. Over 1800 visitors, both young and “not so young!” made their way through the Center where they were treated to tray-passed
hors d’oeuvres, delicious appetizers, and a no-host bar. Many stopped to scoop up sweet treats from the Candy Bar and have their photo taken at the photo booth. Some preferred to bask in the wam summer sun as they enjoyed the beautiful courtyard and performances by strolling enterainers. A Class Faire promoted community classes with demonstrations, music and a variety of give-aways.
The newly renovated facility includes: a dedicated fitness room, expanded computer classroom, large and small multi-purpose rooms, lounge area and enlarged lobby, dedicated nurse/counseling office, remodeled billiards room and remodeled Library.
Furnishings depicting “Sea Country” – an Urban California Design where outdoor materials, representing water, nature and earth are brought inside, can be seen throughout the facility. “Our goal was to create a beautiful, contemporary, and comfortable place for people of all ages to enjoy.” said Cathy Angstadt, Director for the Center.
All in all, the elegant affair, complete with signature items such as the Sea Country Candy Bar, the Sea Country Cookie Pop, and the Sea Country Cocktail demonstrated that “Life is Sweet at Sea Country”.

Few spots left for golf tournament that will benefit community teens
Several sponsors are on board for the 7th Annual Aliso Viejo Community Cup - but there's still room for a few more golfers (or twosomes) to participate in the event that will benefit community teens.
The Aliso Viejo Community Cup takes place on Friday, June 4 at the Aliso Viejo Country Club, 33 Santa Barbara. The event kicks off at 11 a.m., with registration and activities starting at 9 a.m. The fun and competitive golf tournament includes a banquet, raffle, silent auctions, awards and more. Several "on-the-course" contests are also on par.
Golf price is $250 and includes a complimentary golf shirt, continental breakfast, box lunch and dinner. Golfers will be entertained by Eric Tracy, the Mulligan Man.
A host of organizations have signed on to sponsor and participate in the popular tournament including Title Sponsor CR&R Waste Services; Ace Sponsor Charles Abbott Associates; Double Eagle Sponsors PV Maintenance, Pacific Life Insurance and Professional Community Management; Eagle Sponsors Partners Bank of CA, McCarthy Building Companies, Best Best & Krieger LLP, Cox Communications, QLogic Corporation, SunWize, AT&T, and Parker Properties. Birdie Sponsors are APA Engineering, Doctor’s Ambulance and the Horowitz Group.
With a theme in step with Aliso Viejo's 2010 celebration of the Year of the Youth, "Eight-TEEN Holes of Golf," net proceeds from the tournament will benefit the Aliso Viejo Boys & Girls Club and its efforts to launch a Keystone Leadership Teen Program. The program focuses on leadership, education, career development, economic/political awareness and social recreation elements that are crucial to pointing teens into a positive direction.
The Aliso Viejo Country Club is located next to the Aliso Viejo Conference Center and Aliso Viejo Aquatic Center, which opened in May with Memorial Day activities planned to kick off the summer. The facilities are conveniently located off Glenwood at Golf Drive between Moulton Parkway and Aliso Creek Road.

Harvey Milk Day Celebration will be held at the Yost Theater - May 21st
Orange County’s Official Harvey Milk Day Celebration will be held at the Yost Theater (307 Spurgeon Street, Santa Ana) on Friday, May 21st at 7:30 pm.
Co-sponsored and organized by Men Alive, Equality California, Orange County Equality Coalition and other community groups, this free event will celebrate the life of Harvey Milk, the first openly gay man to be elected to a public office in the United States.
The celebration on May 21st, the eve of Milk’s birthday, is an opportunity to celebrate and learn about his life and recognize the ground-breaking efforts he made to open the door to public office for all gay people, including here in Orange County.
There will be door prizes, informative presentations by state office holders, including State Controller John Chaing, the OCEC Storytellers, and a very special performance by Men Alive- The Orange County Gay Men's Chorus in honor of the gay chorus movement, which got its start on the steps of the San Francisco City Hall the night of Milk’s death following a candle light march down Market Street.
Also speaking will be the courageous Bishop Christopher Senyonjo, touring the United States bringing attention to the atrocities against gays and lesbians occurring today in his native Uganda, where his outspoken support of equality at home will land him in prison upon his return.
This fast-paced program will be followed by the showing of the award-winning documentary "The Life and Times of Harvey Milk" and, finally, an after party at Proof Bar in Santa Ana.
Milk was famous for introducing himself during his campaign as, “I’m Harvey Milk and I’m here to recruit you,” to garner support for his election to the San Francisco County Board of Supervisors. His victory was a milestone in California history. Milk was assassinated in 1978 and would have been 80 years old this year.
Celebration of his birthday as a Special Day of Recognition, pursuant to a bill passed by the California State Legislature and signed by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, was also a milestone. Milk was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2009, the nation’s highest civilian honor. Many cities, including the City of Santa Ana have issued proclamations honoring Harvey Milk on his special day.
For more information about this event, please visit www.menalivechorus.org.

Celebrity chef brings 'Meatless Monday' to restaurants
By Dani Friedland on 5/6/2010
Celebrity chef Mario Batali is making it easier for diners to participate in Meatless Monday by offering vegetarian fare at his eateries.
Batali's 14 restaurants, which include Babbo, Del Posto, Bar Jamón and Osteria Mozza, will feature at least two vegetarian entrees every Monday, starting next week. The Meatless Monday logo will be printed next to these menu items.
The restaurants, however, will continue to offer meat on Mondays.
"The fact is, most people in the U.S. eat way more meat than is good for them or the planet," Batali said, in a statement. "Asking everyone to go vegetarian or vegan isn't a realistic or attainable goal. But we can focus on a more plant-based diet, and support the farmers who raise their animals humanely and sustainably. That's why I'm such a big believer in the Meatless Monday movement!"

CSS IS BETTER THAN EVER!
As most of you know The Studio was broken into last Sunday night. over $25,000 worth of electronics and office equipment was ripped off including lights, sound, microphones, computers software, etc.
CSS was up and running within 24 hours of the robbery thanks to all of the wonderful clients, friends and families in our community coming to donate and support CSS. I am overwhelmed with gratitude. We had no idea how much our little studio has impacted our community and it showed when hundreds of families came to our emergency fundraiser only hours after the discovery.
What would have been one of the worst days of our lives, turned into a memory of love and support that I will truly never forget and will last a lifetime. I thank you from the very bottom of my heart.
A special thank you to Lisa Fry & Lynn Lindborg who ran to Miss Tracey's aid early Monday morning and were responsible for picking the pieces up, canceling shows and classes for the studio & organizing the Emergency Fundraiser. CSS will never forget your generosity.

Rachel’s Challenge Chain of Kindness Supported by Mission Viejo / Saddleback Valley Elks
Mission Viejo, CA (April 25, 2010) – On a perfect sunny blue sky Southern California day, Rachel’s Challenge “Links of Character” event, held by the City of Mission Viejo, was supported by the Mission Viejo / Saddleback Valley Elks Lodge #2444 (“Elks Lodge”). The Elks Lodge provided parking for event participants with. Some Elk members joined the many students and their parents in carrying the paper chain from the Elks Lodge parking lot onto the Oso Creek Trail, terminating at the Mission Viejo Norman P. Murray Senior Center, approximately 2.5 miles.
The multi-colored paper chain was a combined effort of OfficeMax and Mission Viejo Community of Character. Each paper chain link included a hand written message. Some messages were generic character oriented messages, “It’s Good to be Nice; Be Polite; Be Courteous”. Other messages were from individual students, “I helped a friend who is disabled, walk down the stairs; I shared my home and took my Aunt to Disneyland, I helped my brother with his homework.”
Exalted Ruler Pat Martino said, “The Elks are proud to support an event dedicated to the memory of an outstanding youth, Rachel Joy Scott. We are all grateful that the parents of Rachel, other Scott family members and volunteers have created Rachel’s Challenge, a powerful organization dedicated to the prevention of teen violence. Rachel’s challenge is now added to the Elk Lodge’s numerous programs dedicated to our nation’s youth; such as, scholarships, scouting, dictionary program, drug awareness, hoop shoot and other youth programs.”
The public is invited to attend the Elks Lodge annual “Youth Appreciation Night” being held on May 4, 2010 at 7:00 PM. The Elk's Lodge is located at 255092 Marguerite Parkway (Marguerite and La Paz), Mission Viejo.
The Mission Viejo / Saddleback Elks Lodge #2444 is one of ten lodges in the Orange Coast District of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks (BPOE) whose headquarters is in Chicago, Illinois. The BPOE is a charitable organization with a 142 year history of giving, “Elks Care, Elks Share.”

Economist predicts record beef prices
By Rita Jane Gabbett on 4/27/2010
Beef prices could hit record highs this spring and summer, eclipsing the third quarter of 2008 when the average retail beef price hit a record $4.46 per pound, according to Purdue University Extension Economist Chris Hurt.
In his weekly outlook report, Hurt noted that retailers have reduced their margins to keep beef prices low so far this year. While retail beef prices were down 10 cents per pound in the first quarter, retail margins dropped by 20 cents per pound.
This can't continue. Retailers will have to raise retail prices soon. And when they do, Hurt cautioned, "Given the weakly recovering economy, consumer demand may not appear so robust this summer with record high beef prices in grocery stores and restaurants."
There are a number of factor pushing beef prices higher, said Hurt, including: the world economy continues to recover, feed prices are lower, red meat supplies are down, exports are strong and retail beef prices have been low.
In fact, U.S. beef production is down 1 percent so far this year as somewhat higher slaughter rates have been more than offset by lower cattle weights. In addition, U.S. and international consumers are competing for reduced meat supplies as they feel more confident about the global economy. In the first two months of 2010, U.S. beef exports were up 24 percent while beef imports were down 23 percent, resulting in a 5 percent reduction in U.S. per capital beef supplies.
Hurt predicted retail beef prices will remain strong throughout the year, but will peak this spring when supplies are the lowest.
Finished cattle prices are also expected to be at their yearly highs this spring. Summer prices are expected to be in the low-to-mid $90s per hundredweight. Hurt forecast in 2010 finished cattle prices may average about $93, dramatically above the $83 of 2009. Prospects for 2011 should remain strong as well, perhaps moving close to $95 for the year.

Corpus Christi Catholic-Christian Community - Easter Message
April 4, 2010
Easter Sunday
Acts 10:34-43 First Corinthians 5:6-8 John 20:1-9
Sometimes it is the simplest things that speak the loudest. A shy smile can cause our hearts to leap. Eyes puddling with tears become salty bridges between two souls. A child nestling into our lap for story time restores order to a crazy world. A wave hello, a kiss blown from afar, a cookie shared, a friend with whom to lament a loss, a stranger who pulls over to help fix a flat, a cool wipe on a feverish brow, …all simple actions…yet powerful in their fundamental quality. On simple things we build our lives and together seek our dreams amidst infinite possibilities.
Thus, it should come as no surprise that on Easter morning we are once again offered an image of basic, yet powerful, simplicity….NOTHING! There was NOTHING there! The grave was empty. The early-rising women and questioning disciples no doubt double-checked to make sure they were at the correct tomb. They probably reassured themselves that they had seen Jesus’ wrapped corpse being consigned to the darkness. But now, NOTHING! No BODY! Nada! Nothing!
On Easter morning we are given the ‘exclamation mark’ at the conclusion of Jesus’ life. His journey, begun simply amidst an animal stall in Bethlehem, has been punctuated with powerful signs and wonders, miraculous healings, copious feedings, powerful teachings, tender invitations, simple signs and gestures. The water that became wine that became blood is the same simple water that washed the feet of weary disciples. Meager loaves of bread fed thousands, multiplied by the one who gives his flesh as bread to billions. The anguish of Friday’s cross, the pointless waiting of Saturday, all the things that scare and terrify us…amount to…NOTHING!
By any standard, this has once again been a rough year. Financial markets are yet to rebound, quick solutions are not at hand, uncertainty and fear have been inflamed, doubt is abundant, trust is scarce, betrayals and disappointments have been proclaimed from bold-print headlines. Many have fought long and hard to keep Jesus in the tomb with the stone securely blocking its entrance. Despite the best of their efforts, this morning, the stone is displaced and the tomb is empty. There is NOTHING there!
With all our theologizing and high-minded formal ritual…the ‘between your eyes’ message of Easter awaits in the simple emptiness of the tomb. Nothing!
It’s so simple it’s comical, it’s so clever…it can only be of God.
For those in relationship with Jesus, what is there to fear in this world? Nothing!
What is there that can hold us back from our dreams? Nothing!
What stands in the way of our happiness? Nothing!
What can keep us from God’s love? Nothing!
What is there we cannot achieve? Nothing!
What is impossible to God? Nothing!
What is impossible for us? Nothing!
What can keep our hearts from healing? Nothing!
On Easter morning…NOTHING becomes the most powerful SOMETHING in the world!
Happy Easter!
Our Corpus Christi Catholic-Christian Community is enriched by your presence amongst us this morning, thank you for coming and celebrating Easter with us! The crowds are a bit larger than usual this morning, in the spirit of Easter; please make sure you introduce yourself to those around you. A reminder that while it is a festive day…. the food and beverages need to happen outside, after Mass….please, no food, no drink, no gum during! Thanks! Bulletins await you as you depart, while Lent is now behind us, our parish life keeps right on humming along, please accept a Bulletin so you can stay in the loop. As you gather later today with your family and friends, as you return to the workplace or classroom tomorrow, as life tries to hold you back or convince you of what you cannot do…remember, there was NOTHING in the tomb….and with the grace of Easter, there is NOTHING you cannot do! Happy Easter…and remember, you are loved. FKB
