CUSD Olympic History – Capo Talk August 2016

Date:

Olympic fever is in full swing. Day and night, viewers are glued to coverage of the American team and their rapidly growing collection of medals Entering this prestigious competition is an unattainable dream for most kids, but several Capistrano Unified athletes have actually been Olympians.

Don August attended Capistrano Valley High School and was the South Coast League Player of the Year for baseball in 1981. He played for the U.S. Olympic team and won silver in Los Angeles in 1984. The OC pitcher spent most of his professional years with the Milwaukee Brewers and retired in 1991.

Five students from San Clemente High have participated in the Olympic Games over the past three decades. Jim Doehring nearly lost his life in a motorcycle accident in 1982, but he recovered and earned a spot shotputting for the 1988 Olympic team in Seoul. He made the team again in 1992, winning silver in the shotput in Barcelona.

The 1996 Olympic squad in Atlanta boasted two SCHS alumni. Jeremy Laster, an All-American with two National Championships in water polo at Stanford, played on the Olympic men’s water polo team. Laster currently serves on the Board of Directors of USA Water Polo. Sue Enquist was in Atlanta coaching the US gold-medal-winning women’s softball team. An All-American player at UCLA, Enquist became one of the winningest coaches in college softball with a record of 887-175-1 at UCLA.

Two more Tritons became Olympians in the swimming pools of Athens in 2004. Kristin Caverly competed in the women’s 200 meter backstroke and Gabe Gardner played on the men’s water polo team. Gardner was on the US team again in 2008, winning gold in Beijing.

Aliso Niguel High School student Kyla Ross was the youngest member of the 2012 United States gold-medal-winning gymnastics team in London. Following their incredible victory, the “Fierce Five” appeared on the Today Show, the Late Show with David Letterman, and met President Obama in the White House. Many thought she would compete on the 2016 Olympic team, but she decided to retire from elite level gymnastics in February. Ross will compete at the collegiate level for the UCLA Bruins in the fall.
