There is plenty to see and do this summer at Mission San Juan Capistrano, whether you’re 8 or 88. Pan for gold, stretch and strengthen, and even spend the night under the stars.

Summer Break Kids Crafts

Mission San Juan Capistrano is pleased to offer special summer break activities for children (appropriate
for ages 6-12) beginning July 4 continuing through August 26, 2016. Parent or sitter must be present to
participate.
Mondays: Gold Panning
Tuesdays: Adobe Brick Making
Wednesdays: Cornhusk Dolls/Action Figures
Thursdays: Mini Coiled Clay Pot
Fridays: Arrowhead Necklace
Ceramic Camps
Session 1: July 11-15 & July 18-22
Session 2: July 25-29 & August 1-5
9 a.m. – 1 p.m.
$300 for members, $330 for non-members
Come join the fun and play with clay! Students will learn both ceramic hand building techniques and how to throw clay on the wheel.
Stretch and Strength Series 2016 — Supporting the Fight Against Cancer In Honor of St. Peregrine’s
Chapel Thursdays:  July 28 and August 25, 2016 6-7 p.m. $10 Per Participant Per Class
Mission San Juan Capistrano is home to St. Peregrine’s Chapel, a place of prayer and hope dedicated to
the Patron Saint of Cancer, and destination of visitors from across the world who have been impacted by
cancer. In honor of all those who have survived or are currently battling cancer, Mission San Juan
Capistrano will host the third annual Stretch and Strength Class Series to help raise awareness and funds
for cancer research.
The public is invited to bring a personal exercise mat and to enjoy this special after-hours experience of
stretching, meditation and renewal in the historic Mission courtyard.
Proceeds benefit the American Cancer Society Relay for Life of San Juan Capistrano. The Mission receives no proceeds for this series. Bring a personal exercise mat and water bottle. Children may participate or observe but must be accompanied by an adult.
Night at the Mission Adventure Sleepover
July 15, 6 p.m. – July 16, 8 a.m.
$75 for non-members, $70 for members, and $65 per individual in groups of 4 or more.
Mission San Juan Capistrano is pleased to offer an adventurous sleepover of camping overnight on
Mission grounds for kids with their parents. The sleepover includes dinner, activities and breakfast the
following morning.
Mission Fine Art Gallery Plein Air Paint Out at Mission San Juan Capistrano
August 1 & August 3, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Free with General Admission
Plein air painting, a tradition that flourished in California between 1890 and 1930, has been significant in its ability to record the Mission’s historic and architectural setting over time. Visit the Mission August 1st and 3rd to experience the plein air painting tradition as it is carried on today. Painters may be seen across the Mission grounds during regular hours, between 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Mission Art Walks
Every 3rd Friday of the month
11-11:45 a.m.
Free with paid admission
The Mission Art Walk is a docent guided tour highlighting the art collection of rare paintings related to
Mission’s history within the Serra Chapel, the Spanish Colonial Room and the Mission Treasures Exhibit.
Experience Spanish Colonial and Plein Air paintings as well as learn about Mission San Juan Capistrano’s goal and efforts in the conservation of its collection.

Adobe Brick Making

Join the fun! During this hands-on activity, kids are encouraged to make and build their own adobe brick.
Examine the daily lives of Mission Native Americans. Students and adults will delight in the historic fun.

Join the fun! Craft your own arrowhead necklace while learning about the lifestyle of Mission Native
Americans. Students and adults will delight in the historic fun.

Garden Tours

These half hour tours are conducted by the Mission Gardening Angels every Wednesday at 10:00 and
10:30 a.m. Guests wishing to tour should meet at the Front Gate.

Every Tuesday & Thursday
10 a.m. – noon
Each educational cart offers close-up learning for students and visitors interested in seeing items up close.
Items include branding irons, spurs, horseshoes, hides, candles, pottery shards and objects used by the
Juaneno Indians.

Homeschool Family Day
Every 3rd Wednesday of the Month
9 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Join us every 3rd Wednesday of the month for Homeschool Family Day. Discount package includes child

Native American Basket Weaving

Experience the art of basket weaving at Mission San Juan Capistrano on the 1st & 3rd Wednesdays of
each month. Learn the traditions and capture the culture of basket weaving.

Serra Chapel Tour

In honor of Father Serra’s 300th birthday celebration, the Mission is offering guests the chance to enjoy a  private tour of the Serra Chapel, the most historically significant chapel in California, every Sunday.

About Mission San Juan Capistrano:
Known as the “Jewel of the Missions,” Mission San Juan Capistrano is a historic landmark and museum
that boasts of quality permanent exhibits featuring original artifacts as well as traveling and temporary
exhibits on a wide variety of topics.
The site itself serves as a living outdoor museum with original buildings constructed by Native Americans in the 18th century including the Serra Chapel, Great Stone Church, and the original padres’ quarters of the South Wing. The Mission was founded on November 1, 1776 by Padre Junipero Serra as the seventh in the chain of the twenty-one California missions established by Spain, and is Orange County’s only mission. Every year, over 50,000 students visit the Mission and engage in an inspirational learning experience via the Mission Matters programming, as part of their State required California history studies.

Preservation Foundation, which is comprised of business and community leaders committed to ensuring
