PinnocchioThe public is invited to enjoy the animated Disney masterpiece “Pinocchio” on Sunday, June 14 at Mission Viejo City Hall.

The G-rated film, which airs at 2 p.m., is sponsored by the City’s Community of Character Committee. The movie coincides with June’s character trait of “citizenship.”

Considered among the finest Disney features ever made and one of the greatest animated films of all time, this original 1940 version highlights the importance of honesty and good citizenship.  The film’s soundtrack won an Oscar for Best Original Score, including “When You Wish Upon a Star,” “I’ve Got No Strings,” and Jiminy Cricket’s “Give a Little Whistle.”

Character educators Elaine Portnoy and Bob Hayes lead a brief discussion following the film, which will be shown on a theater-size screen with theater-style seating and surround-sound at 200 Civic Center, just across from the Mission Viejo Library.  Children in attendance will receive a special prize.

peppino croppedAcoustic guitar giant Peppino D’Agostino is teaming up with drummer extraordinaire Jeff Campitelli for a special Mission Viejo performance on Saturday, June 27.

The duo will appear in the Lord of the Strings concert at 7 p.m. in the Council Chamber at City Hall, 200 Civic Center.

Peppino D’Agostino has been hailed as “a guitarist’s guitarist” by Acoustic Guitar Magazine and as its “Player of the Year” reader’s poll winner. He holds many top guitar awards, and the San Francisco Chronicle encapsulated the essential difference that distinguishes his music when it dubbed him “a poet.”  D’Agostino doesn’t just play the guitar. He composes, arranges, collaborates, improvises and has been known to sing a song here and there in English and Italian.

Drummer and percussionist Jeff Campitelli was bitten by the drum bug early in life. As a senior in high school, he met and formed a band with legendary guitarist Joe Satriani.  Through the years, he has made more than 20 albums (including three gold and one platinum), seven live concert DVDs with Satriani and has played on 15 Grammy-nominated songs.

Tickets are $30 and are available by calling 949-842-2227 or online athttp://www.lordofthestringsconcerts.com.

JoseJose Antonio is busy preparing for the biggest event of his life.  He will be one of 7,000 athletes to compete in the Special Olympics World Games in Los Angeles July 25-August 2.

Before that, Jose will join nearly 200 athletes from Spain and Indonesia for three exciting days in Mission Viejo. The City of Mission Viejo is an official Host Town for the Special Olympics World Games.  With community donations, the City will provide Jose and his fellow athletes with lodging, transportation, activities, meals and use of athletic facilities July 21-24 before they head to LA to compete.

Competition is something this 21-year-old athlete with Down syndrome knows well.  He recently won second place in a major tennis tournament in Palma de Mallorca, Spain.  He only took up the sport four years ago and has been training hard to take part in the Special Olympics World Summer Games.

The Mission Viejo community will roll out the red carpet for Jose and his fellow athletes exposing them to local culture, events, activities and fun.  Residents, businesses, groups and organizations are invited to help sponsor these inspiring athletes to make their stay here even more memorable.

swim

In an effort to prevent drownings, the City of Mission Viejo is teaming up with the Orange County Fire Authority to host a Water Safety Day on Saturday, June 27. The event is from 10 a.m. to noon at the Sierra Recreation Center, 26887 Recodo Lane.

Geared toward people of all ages, Water Safety Day will feature drowning-prevention tips, emergency responders reacting to a “mock” drowning, educational exhibits and free water-watcher tags and whistles as well as recreational swim and games.

The need for such an event is certainly there: Drowning is the leading cause of death and disability in California for kids under 5. Last year, 21 children under the age of 15 died from drownings in the state.

City partners for the event include the Sheriff’s Department; Care Ambulance; Nadadores swim team; Orange County Health Department; American Red Cross; Jasper Ray Foundation for Drowning Prevention and Child Safety; and the Independent Pool and Spa Service Association.

Union Market girl with coffee 12-16-14

The 28,000-square-foot Union Market Mission Viejo is under construction at Kaleidoscope with a host of restaurants and retailers secured for the center at 27741 Crown Valley Parkway.

The market will boast 20 unique restaurants and retailers under one roof, between Riptide Rockin’ Sushi & Teppan Grills and Buffalo Wild Wings.  Portola Coffee Roasters, Milk Box, Hummus Bowl, Anchor Hitch – Seafood & Raw Bar, and Oyu Shabu are the first eateries to submit plans to the City.

Recently dubbed “Roaster of the Year,” Portola Coffee Roasters is a specialty coffee bar that will be housed near the market’s entrance.  Milk Box uses organic ingredients for milk teas along with boba and desserts.  Oyu Shabu will mix things up with a cook-it-yourself hot pot dining style, and Hummus Bowl will serve up the tasty organic dip.  The north side of Union Market is reserved for Anchor Hitch – Seafood and Raw Bar, a contemporary fish and oyster bar focused on sustainable, fresh seafood, and the Noodle Bar, a build-your-own Vietnamese Pho restaurant.

Union Market representatives say Poke Station – another build-your-own style eatery – Market 2 Plate with fresh pasta and salads, Central Bar (serving specialty cocktails and libations) as well as Artisan Candles, Bambu Earth and a women’s clothing shop have also been secured for the Mission Viejo locale.

The project is expected to open late summer.  For more information, visithttp://www.unionmarketmissionviejo.com).
