Learn to Preserve Your Family History

Article - Preservation Program

Do you have a stack of photographs stuffed in a shoebox and the images are fading as the years pass? Maybe you have an old diary or book that a great grandparent owned and it’s getting crumbly. Come to the preservation program to learn how best to keep these treasures safe and even how to digitize them into computer files for electronic preservation.

Topic of the discussion will include:

  • Proper care and handling of original materials.
  • Archival materials used to best preserve materials.
  • How best to convert materials into digital formats.
  • Examples of hardware and software used to digitize materials.

To RSVP or for more information, contact the library at libreference@cityofmissionviejo.org or call 949-830-7100 ext 5105.

Saddleback College’s art degree program ranked among nation’s best

Saddleback College’s art degree program has been ranked among the top associate degree programs in the country.

The program was just listed in the annual rankings for the 2016-2017 Best Two-Year Art Degree Programs in the Nation by the Community for Accredited Online Schools, a leading resource for online learning and college accreditation information. The impressive ranking for Saddleback’s Art Department includes 1st in Orange County, 5th in California and 20th in the nation.

Universities and colleges that qualify for this ranking must be not-for-profit institutions, have institutional accreditation and offer at least a two-year degree program for completion.

“We wanted to highlight schools like Saddleback College, which have made a point to strive for excellence through their art program curricula and effectiveness of instructors,” said Doug Jones, CEO and founder of Community for Accredited Online Schools. “These schools are not only offering exceptional programs to students, but they have upheld rigorous standards through accreditation.”

Saddleback College prepares graduates for careers in every aspect of the visual and performing arts. The school also prepares students to transfer to 4-year schools.

Give someone a unique, lasting holiday gift by purchasing a paver

If you’re seeking a unique and memorable holiday gift for that special someone, consider purchasing a $100 paver for the “Canine Walk of Fame” at La Paws Park.

The pavers will be installed mid-March at the popular 6-acre dog park located at the eastern edge of the City along Felipe Road just south of Gilleran Park.

Paver donations help pay for added dog park amenities like benches, chairs, tables, drinking fountains and shade structures.

Pavers are available through the end of January and can be purchased via cash or check at Mission Viejo City Hall, 200 Civic Center, or online here.

Each paver can have up to three lines of text, each line 15 characters long. Pavers make a perfect holiday gift and are a simple way to leave a lasting mark on La Paws Park.

Have your photo with your pet and Santa Claus for a good cause Dec. 10

The holiday event is from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Winter Wonderland Village nestled in the Kershaw Garden at the City’s Civic Center, 200 Civic Center.

Pick up your holiday ornament to benefit homeless animals

You have the opportunity to celebrate your feline or K9 while supporting a great cause through the Mission Viejo Animal Services Center’s “Holiday Tree of Memories.”

The tree is adorned with ornaments decorated by members of our community. Some were etched with tributes to pets adopted from the shelter, while others pay homage to those no longer with us.

You can pick up your ornament at the Mission Viejo Animal Services Center at 28095 Hillcrest during business hours to decorate. The facility will accept donations in any amount for the ornaments and all proceeds will benefit the Dedicated Animal Welfare Group (DAWG).  This is the nonprofit fundraising arm of the center that provides medical care and helping hands to comfort sick, injured, neglected and scared animals that arrive at the shelter.

For more information, call 949-470-3045.
