Ocean Institute to Present 32nd Annual Tall Ships Festival

The Ocean Institute will present its 32nd annual Ocean Institute Tall Ships Festival presented by Toshiba on Saturday and Sunday, September 10 & 11th, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.  2016, with a beautiful Sunset Parade of Tall Ships on Friday, September 9th from 4:30-7:30 p.m.

Come and enjoy the majesty and wonder of tall ships through the sights, sounds and smells of these amazing historic vessels. Throughout the festival, we will explore myths, legends and lore of the sea with mermaid and pirate encounters.

There will be interactive living-history encampments, including blacksmiths, scrimshaw artists, knot tiers, British and American revolutionary period mariners and three pirate encampments! Onboard the Brig Pilgrim, watch the Naval Historical Foundation perform its amazing reenactment and have your little ones join in our Pirate Parade!

The Ocean Institute also has numerous interactive labs and activities. Exciting maritime displays and exhibits will be throughout the facility, including our interactive woodworkers. Search for treasure, make some creative crafts, learn how mermaids communicate underwater, , and get up-close and personal with some of the ocean’s most amazing sea creatures, including sea stars, jellies, rays and octopuses.
Sierra Nevada will be sponsoring a beer garden on Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 5pm, the cost will be $5.00 per beer.

Experience blasting cannons, towering rigging, bustling decks and the magnificence of a canvas full of wind. Work with the crew hauling up sail or simply sit back and enjoy this spectacular demonstration of skill, knowledge and survival.

About the Ocean Institute
The Ocean Institute is an ocean education center that offers in-depth Marine Science, Maritime History and Outdoor Education programs. The facility includes state-of-the-art teaching labs, the Maddie James Seaside Learning Center, two historic tallships, and an oceanographic research vessel. Immersion-based field trips range from one-hour science labs to multi-day programs at sea. All programs are designed to maximize immersion, spark curiosity, and inspire a deep commitment to learning. Ocean-based exhibits are open to the public seven days a week.

Visitors can explore the underwater world while participating in fun activities designed to indulge ocean curiosity. Throughout the year, the Ocean Institute also offers organized family programs, summer camps, cruises, tallship sails, and other unique events including our annual Toshiba Tall Ships Festival and the Festival of Whales.
