Saddleback Community College kicks off their FREE Summer of Theatre series with Shrek The Musical in Concert for only two performances; Friday, July 7 and July 8 at 7:30 pm.

Saddleback’s Summer of Theatre is a summer-long series that strives to bring affordable (it’s free) and quality theatre to the general public in a casual, outdoor venue fit for adults and children alike. The lineup includes two musical theatre productions, one Big Band night, and two Shakespeare plays put on by local theatre company Shakespeare by The Sea.

Shrek The Musical, is a musical adaptation of the hit 2001 animated Dreamworks film Shrek with book and lyrics by David Lindsay-Abaire and music by Jeanine Tesori of Millie and Fun Home fame. It follows the same story-line as the movie but expands on a familiar cast of characters including, Shrek the Ogre, Fiona the cursed Princess, A talking Donkey, Prince Farquaad, Pinocchio the puppet, Gingy the cookie, and a whole slew of zany fairy tale creatures.

Here are some answers to questions I asked members of the cast and crew a couple nights ago:

Auva Abedini (Gingy): What I like about working with Saddleback is the level of professionalism as well as the skills of not only my fellow actors but, my director as well. I feel like I am working at a professional level which is helping me improve my acting skills and abilities. I feel myself improving vocally and learning new techniques.

Jason Bohen (Donkey): I’ve always wanted to be in a musical, this is actually my first time, so I think getting to know other people who have been in the headspace of musical theatre and picking up some of the positivity, the creativity, and the work ethic that comes with it really sharpens your mind in terms of work ethic and precision and team effort. I’m really fortunate to be here working with people and experiencing a full musical production for the first time. The fine arts program as a whole is just incredible. David [Anthony] is just overqualified to be working with us and I feel very fortunate.

Nick Mestakides (Farquaad): It’s a lot of fun, everyone is hysterical, everybody sounds great and even though it’s a concert version it is lightly staged and I think people will be able to imagine this fairytale with us even though it doesn’t have the full-on staging, sets, and costumes. I think they’ve done a really great job of creating the illusion of a full-scale production. My favorite part about Shrek is getting to play a character that is about half my size who has this larger than life ego. There’s just no boundaries and the director lets me play as much as I want and lets me make choices without stopping me because you know, Lord Farquaad can’t be stopped!

Kelly Garrett (Fiona): [Saddleback] has a professional environment where there are good people and good teachers. You can learn a lot from the professors and directors. My favorite part about Shrek has been cast bonding and inside jokes. Everyone gets along really well. I’ve learned new acting choices, as in learning different ways to express the character’s emotions and what the writer is trying to convey. People should come see Shrek because it is a fun show about a smelly ogre. It’s filled with happiness and rockin’ music and it’s a family-friendly show for all people

Pierce Livingston (Assistant Director): Saddleback has a lot of opportunities for students. I said, “Hey I really want to assistant direct!” and they got me on assistant directing. They do a lot to engage with the student when [the students] take initiative and I think that’s really nice in a college setting. My favorite part about Shrek is seeing all the actors make good choices and seeing it all come together and come to life. I think it’s going to be a really great show, I love the show itself. The actors are amazing and the direction is really great. And it’s FREE! and it’s gonna be out in the quad and there’s really no reason not to go and if you don’t go you’ll really be missing out.

Paige Vanderwarker (Dragon):  I’ve grown as a whole looking back. Saddleback has taught me a lot on stage and off, so I really value and appreciate my time that I’ve spent growing up here. Something I’ve learned is –  to just go for it –  to not be afraid.  I’ve learned to be confident and it’s really worked.

Don’t miss out on Shrek in Concert this July!
