Hundreds of community members seized the opportunity to safely dispose of personal documents and financial records without fear of identity theft during the city’s 7th annual Document Shredding and E-waste event at Soka University. During the May 14 event, more than 11 tons of paper was shred and recycled. Area residents also recycled 7,973 pounds of electronic waste.
“With assistance from Public Works and Police Services staff, city volunteers, Explorers, PVM, Southern California Shredding and Goodwill Industries, the city served about 450 patrons,” said City Clerk Mitzi Ortiz, who organized the event.
A steady stream of vehicles drove through Soka’s parking lot with folks dropping off boxes of sensitive information for immediate shredding along with printers, monitors, cell phones and other electronics.
“This community event highlights the importance of destroying personal information properly, an essential step in guarding one’s identity, along with drawing attention to recycling,” Ortiz said.
