More About The Village of Hope:
The Village of Hope program serves daily meals to homeless men, women, and children. Meals are supplied through a combination of donations and purchased food; they are prepared in our kitchen by volunteers, clients, and supervised by full time kitchen staff.
We also serve meals through outreach programs such as the Mobile Feeding Program. Our two ‘Chili Vans’ visit sites where chronically homeless individuals are known to gather. The program serves an average of 2,900 meals of freshly-made chili, bread, and coffee each month.
Through the Food Box Distribution Program, the Rescue Mission provides 1,000 food boxes monthly to low-income and homeless families in Orange County. Each food box is capable of feeding a family of 4 for a week.
Chili Van Mobile Ministry
Under the leadership of the Orange County Rescue Mission, the Chili Van mobile food ministry is able to provide a warm meal to hundreds of people who are either homeless or don’t have enough money to put food on the table each day. The newly renovated vehicle provides hot meals, beverages, and bread to thousands of at-risk people in poverty-stricken areas of Orange County every Tuesday and Thursday night. On a typical evening, the team, led by volunteer Brian Crain, serves an average of 315 portions of chili, coffee and fresh bakery bread. In addition, they pass out Bibles and pray with those who would like it.
The outreach unexpectedly began after the Orange County Rescue Mission donated a 35-pound chocolate Santa Claus to His Chaplain For You, a chaplaincy provider working in collaboration with various local churches and counseling ministries. Its founder, Roy Gerber, was looking for a way to share it with the homeless at Christmas, so he called to ask his friends to donate some chili, bread and coffee to provide a complete meal to the homeless at Christmas. Thus was born the Chili Van mobile food ministry.
