January 9 & 10, 2010 | 10:00am to 3:00pm
This weekend, Saturday & Sunday, January 9 & 10, 10 am – 3 pm each day, we’ll be having our first Archaeology Fair (the first for us, the 10th for AIA). We’ll have 17 exhibiters, who will have hands-on activities for families. These include exhibits related to the ancient world, the American Revolution, the Roman Empire, etc. Lots of people in costume, artifacts, and things for kids to touch and do. Information:

Also, starting Monday, January 11, we’ll be beginning our kids conferences on watersheds. Hundreds of kids from Southland schools have been studying the effects of pollution which ultimately winds up on our beaches and in our oceans. These will go on for 3 weeks.

Created in 2001, the fair is the brainchild of then-president Jane Waldbaum and AIA staffer, Lisa Naas. The event was established to provide a unique experience for children and their families that would complement AIA’s Annual Meeting. The catalyst behind this year’s partnership between the Ocean Institute and the Archaeological Institute of America is Charles W. Steinmetz. Mr. Steinmetz is a board member of both organizations and saw the value in connecting the two groups.
The Archaeological Institute of America (AIA) is North America’s oldest and largest organization devoted to the world of archaeology. The Institute is a nonprofit group founded in 1879 and chartered by the United States Congress in 1906. Today, the AIA has nearly 200,000 members belonging to more than 100 societies in the United States, Canada, and overseas. This diverse group is united by a shared passion for archaeology and its role in furthering human knowledge.
The fair will take place on Saturday and Sunday, January 9 and 10, 2010 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Ocean Institute, 24200 Dana Point Harbor Drive, Dana Point.
