News From Corpus Christi

Date:

June 13-14, 2009

On the weekend of June 27-29 the basket will be placed on the altar for your consideration of the Universal Church Collection, frequently called ‘Peter’s Pence’. This special collection combines Peter’s Pence with Catholic Relief Services Collection. CRS assists the poor and disadvantages by alleviating human suffering, promoting development of all people and fostering charity and justice internationally. Peter’s Pence promotes and supports the works of our Holy Father, enabling him to respond with emergency financial assistance to those who suffer as a result of war, oppression and natural disasters throughout the world. As always, your generosity is appreciated. Thanks.

Batter, batter, batter….our POPs are going to a BALLGAME!!!

POPs is Corpus Christi’s outreach to the dad in our parish, gathering roughly every other month with their kids ages 0-18 to socialize, network and simply share the experience of being a Catholic dad. The next POPs event is a baseball game on SUNDAY, JULY 26th at Angel Stadium between the Angels and the Minnesota Twins. July 26th is a special day at Angel Stadium. Kids can get player photos before the game, run the bases after the game (12 and under) and play in the Fun Zone at any time! While the exact time for the game is yet to be determined by the Angel’s, it will probably start either at 12:30 or 4. Cost is $14 per person and reservation forms are available on the Concierge Shelves. Each family provides their own transportation. For more info, contact Dave Bell at 362-0494 or Rosario Rodriguez at 429-7411.

Get ready……our 2009 Summer Gospel Revival – July 29-30 is coming!
Over the past series of summers, Corpus Christi has explored our Jewish roots by journeying back in time to the era of Jerusalem during the events of Holy Week; to Bethlehem for the events surrounding a particular pregnant couple; to Galilee by the Sea for powerful teachings and miracles…and last year the Journey to Rome helped us understand how we stopped being Jewish and became CHRISTIANS! This year, mark your calendars for something new, fun and uplifting as we experience a particular vibrant aspect of our Catholic-Christian heritage: ‘2009 Summer Gospel Revival’ on July 29th and 30th. Two nights of ‘mini-retreat’ for the whole family featuring two Gospel Choirs from Los Angeles and dynamic sharings from Fr. Charles Wood of St. Henry’s Parish in Gresham, Oregon. Each night will get underway with a family barbeque on the lawn – Southern California style – followed by a weaving together of the music and sharing by Fr. Charles. The evenings will come to a close with an open ‘ice-cream sundae bar’ with all the proper fixin’s. While a tent would have been a nice touch, in these days of cutting back, we will host it all under our South County stars and fill two hot-summer nights with laughter, prayer, music and some down-home wonderful aromas and tastes. Reservation forms ARE NOW available on the Concierge Shelves (TWO nights for a reduced price from last year: $30 per adult, $15 per child under 12 and over 2)….one price for two very full and fun nights. (sorry, no discounts or partial payments for partial attendance.)

HEARTPRINTS is offering a ‘Breakaway Morning for Women’ NEXT Saturday, June 20th from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the lower hall. A $20 fee will cover materials and brunch. All women and girls (grade 6 and above) are invited to attend. Designed for those who struggle with distraction or restlessness during prayer, “Adding Color to our Prayers’ will combine a simple, active, meditative and relaxed approach to prayer while engaging the creative and artistic potential that dwells within each person. For more information please contact Kathy Hoyt (677-8194) or Patti Whaley (768-6485) Thanks!
The sponsorships are adding up…. we are up to 17 for our youth leaders! Can you help?

In this era of budget cuts and pared household finances, it is with hat in hand that we once again come ‘begging’ for Youth Summit Sponsorships for the Leadership Camp to be held August 17-18-19 the Big Bear Conference Center (A Presbyterian Camp) in Big Bear. This year we have 25 High School Youth who have expressed a desire to attend, our numbers keep growing and growing. While at camp not only will they benefit from the camaraderie of being with other Corpus Christi youth they will receive training in leadership skills, how to facilitate group meetings, conflict resolution and serious opportunities to develop team building skills. The youth who have participated in the past are the most active of our HAVEN youth, we see them jumping on board with assorted parish functions, lectoring and helping to guide and lead our JAMs (Middle School Youth ministry) gatherings. The cost breakdown is as follows for Leadership Camp: The youth summit expenses will break down like this: $175.00 for retreat center (3 nights and meals) $75.00 per person for 1-day teambuilding and ropes course; $40.00 per person (+ or -) supplies, snacks, book, etc. $100.00 per person transportation (the round trip bus fare generally runs $2000.00.) For a Grand Total of $390.00, + some gratuities, so let’s just say $400.00 PER PERSON. If anyone would be willing to donate the bus transportation it will knock $100 off every kid’s fee. If 25 generous folk want to step up and offer $400 each…we will have it covered. Yes…I know that in this time of belt tightening it might seem odd that we are continuing with our Youth Leadership Summit…but we cannot stop preparing our youth for the leadership tasks they will inherit in a few short years….and one of those tasks will be generously caring for US!! If you are able to make a donation of a full sponsorship…wonderful. If you are able to make a donation to help offset the transportation, wonderful. If you are able to just donate a few dollars to offset some of the expenses, wonderful! In other words, anything you want to donate, we will accept! Please give a call (or send your donation) to Fr. Fred at 27231 Aliso Viejo Parkway, AV, CA 92656. Thank you for your consideration….and even if you cannot make a financial donation, please keep the Youth Leaders (past, present and future) of our parish in your prayers. Thanks. FKB

Father’s Day is NEXT weekend….special Memorial Cards for our dads, living or deceased, are on the Concierge Shelves.

With Aliso Niguel High School’s graduation this week, the season for graduations pretty much comes to a close. Graduations have already occurred at Santa Margarita Catholic High School, Mater Dei, Servite, Connolly, JSerra and Rosary. To all our parish youth completing your High School years, CONGRATULATIONS! Well done!

Happy 10th Anniversary!

Our thanks and appreciation are extended to Laurie and Bill Barber (and all their WONDERFUL volunteers!) for their labors of love this weekend in preparing our Anniversary Receptions. Wonderful food, the best company, efficiently served….thank you Bill and Laurie for helping us celebrate 10 years of being the Body and Blood of Christ here in Aliso Viejo.

And finally….special recognition and gratitude is extended to YOU…each and every one of you, who as parishioners of Corpus Christi have allowed our parish to thrive. From our first Mass at Oak Grove Elementary School to our enthusiastically celebrated events within our Grand Hall, it is YOUR faith, YOUR trust and YOUR commitment that continually breathe fresh vigor into our parish. This weekend is a celebration of what YOU have brought to life! Congratulations!
