Corpus Christi Updates

Date:

August 1-2, 2009

Corpus Christi Adult Faith Formation presents, “Discovering Wisdom,” a five week course exploring the author, genre, content, symbolism, theology and modern impact of the Book of Wisdom. This engaging and provocative Bible study course will be taught by Shawn Wehan (Coordinator of Adult Faith Formation) and will involve both lecture and small group sharing.

Classes will take place on Monday evenings at 7PM and repeated Tuesday mornings at 10AM. The following are the course dates: August 3 & 4, 10 & 11, 17 & 18, 24 & 25 and 31 & Sept. 1st.

A new LAMPLIGHTER Season approaches and sign-ups will be occurring THIS weekend. Lamplighters is Corpus Christi’s equivalent of ‘small neighborhood communities’ gathering in parishioner homes to discuss a common book. It provides an opportunity to meet nearby parishioners and get acquainted with the larger community….in your own backyard. Host homes are always being sought, as well as individuals who would like to participate. For more information please call: Shawn Wehan at 949-297-8516

Directional aid now on our website….(www.avcatholics.org)
If you think government agencies move slow…you should try getting Mapquest or the other assorted on-line directional entities to correctly show Corpus Christi’s location for people seeking direction. After years and years of trying to get them to update….our simpler answer is to add a NEW ‘DIRECTIONS’ tab on our own website that provides not just downloadable maps, but written guidance as well.

Feel free to direct friends or visitors to our website (www.avcatholics.org) when guiding them to Mass or an event. (Our thanks and appreciation to Anne Jordan for doing all the hard work and making it happen!)

‘Economic Info Night for People Who Don’t Know Everything’…(most of us!)
In response to the economic upheavals and uncertainties being experienced by a large number of our parishioners, last Spring Corpus Christi began planning for a SPECIAL ‘Economic Info Night for People Who Don’t Know Everything’. So…mark your calendars for the evening of Thursday, September 10, from 6:00 p.m. till 10:00 p.m. when Corpus Christi and Farmers & Merchants Bank are teaming up to present a ‘Financial Summit’ featuring a series of presentations/sessions on issues of importance to the average parishioner.

Topics to be covered include: Property, casualty and liability insurance; Health disability, long term care insurance and COBRA strategies, Life insurance, Estate Planning, documents (wills, trusts, POA), Incapacity planning, Gifting strategies, Mortgage Strategies, Reverse Mortgages, Delinquency and Foreclosure options, Debt management, Survival techniques in an economy gone bad…and planning for special circumstance (job loss, divorce, special needs, etc.) Speakers have been drawn from a wide pool….and are NOT allowed to only promote themselves…but can include their names on a LIST of potential resources in each of the listed categories.

The ‘Financial Summit’ is being offered FREE of charge to Corpus Christi parishioners….BUT advance reservations are needed so that adequate space and food can be prepared. The evening will include a light buffet of appetizers and refreshments. Reservation forms will be available on the Concierge Shelves starting in mid-August. Thanks!

1. A reminder, our parish policy is that any family seeking the Sacrament of Baptism, First Reconciliation or First Eucharist, (Marriage), needs to have been a REGISTERED PARISHIONER for a minimum of THREE MONTHS prior to the setting of any Sacramental dates. (Thus, someone registering today, may call in three months to begin the process of scheduling a date….not register and schedule at the same time.)

2. Our next Sacramental Preparation Session for families of children desiring First Reconciliation and First Eucharist here at Corpus Christi is scheduled for Saturday, August 15th at 2:30 p.m., concluding with the 5:00 p.m. Mass. Please note that participation at one of our quarterly Sacramental Prep Sessions prior to scheduling a First Reconciliation and First Eucharist is a parish requirement. You will receive your Sacramental Registration Form at the conclusion of the session. This policy is binding for ALL families, both those who have multiple children (who may have already received one or more First Eucharists, fresh attendance at the Sacramental Prep for each child is necessary) and for those approaching the Sacraments for the first time. To ensure adequate supplies, please call Peggy Armenta at (949) 389-9209.

It is important to note that these Sacramental Preparation Sessions augment but DO NOT replace our parish policy of parents teaching their own children the essentials of our faith and introducing their own children to the person of Jesus Christ. These Prep Sessions are final steps to ensure that parental education has indeed been happening.

The next NETS (Networking Employment Transition Support) meeting will be NEXT Sunday, August 9 at 3:00 p.m. in meeting rooms 3 & 4. Please contact Ed Jordan for more info at 690-1889. Thanks.

Believe it or not…some of our college-bound youth are already gearing up for new academic seasons at University and College….and nothing says ‘I love You’…like SCRIP! SCRIP provides our cherished youth with the opportunity to get whatever they need/want from assorted stores and restaurants. Easy to purchase (no cost to you, just an exchange of cash for the same amount of SCRIP) and every dollar nets Corpus Christi a few pennies. Why not give it a try this year?!?

Jesus asked us to visit those who are imprisoned….
If that’s too hard, how about providing them with stamps instead?

Catholic Detention Ministries has a holiday tradition of distributing Christmas cards to inmates and incarcerated youth in our Orange County jails and juvenile detention facilities so they can send cards to their spouses, children, parents or close relatives. While they have sufficient cards to once again honor their tradition…they are in DIRE NEED of postage stamps! In particular they are looking for the ‘forever’ or first class stamps. If you would like to assist in their meritorious and compassionate outreach you can mail your donation of stamps to: Catholic Detention Ministry, 1820 W. Orangewood Ave. Suite 101, Orange, CA 92868. Thanks!

Our Summer REVIVAL has come and gone….but it wouldn’t have happened at all without…..
Our thanks and appreciation to Jonathan Kim and members of our Music Ministry for their spirited contribution/participation in this past week’s REVIVAL. Our gratitude is likewise extended to the 600 or so folk who came out to enjoy the two evenings of music, prayer, food and community. Thank you to Marc Jordan for construction of staging and placement of lights…and essentially every little thing that needed doing. Thanks as well to Ryan Hays and John Brady for making dinner for 1200 people look easy…Noah and Ben….thanks for the table set-up, Mary, Mark, Jeannette, Kathleen, Doris, and Jeannie….thanks for volunteering to help. For all the folk who helped out in ways big and small… Brett and Brendan who lugged and emptied trash, our maintenance ministry who kept our bathrooms clean and sparkling… and everybody who stepped up and did what needed doing….THANK YOU!
