Critical Conversations @Soka presents
Concerned by the number of suicides impacting our local and global communities, Critical Conversations @Soka, a distinguished speakers series featuring artists, instigators and thought-leaders, is hosting “The Suicide Epidemic: Real Insight. Real Hope. Real Help.” on Tuesday, April 16 at 7 PM, with international authority of mood disorders Dr. Kay Redfield Jamison and Alison Malmon, founder of Active Minds, an organization providing actionable information to help students find help.

Dr. Kaye Redfield Jamison Alison Malmon
In an effort to offer fresh insight, hope, and help, Critical Conversations @Soka is inviting the community to a compelling conversation between two women who have faced different sides of the suicide epidemic. New York Times bestselling author and Professor of Psychiatry, Dr. Kay Redfield Jamison lives with a mood disorder and wrote Night Falls Fast: Understanding Suicide. Alison Malmon lost a brother to suicide and as a result, founded Active Minds, an international non-profit that helps students create greater and sustained support to prevent the loneliness and isolation that can lead to self-harm.
The speakers will discuss all aspects of the issue, including how students, parents, seniors, veterans, those who suffer from depression, and those who are supporting loved ones with depression, can identify the red flags. They will also discuss how to cope if a loved one has committed suicide. The aim is to lift up the conversation about mental health in order to create hope and prevent such future tragedies. The conversation will be followed by an extended audience Q&A.
No one will be turned away due to lack of funds. Free tickets can be requested by individuals, schools and community organizations by emailing conversations@soka.edu. Groups of 30+ may also be eligible for bus reimbursement grants.
The mission of Critical Conversations @ Soka is to ignite conversations, connect community, and offer actionable information to transform pressing local and global issues in a positive way.
