BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT IS TOMORROW ¡V OCTOBER 7TH! One of the most important ways you can support your child (and his or her teacher) is to attend Back to School Night. The purpose of this evening is to inform you about the year ahead, the routines and procedures for your child¡¦s classroom, the curriculum and expectations. Parents who are not able to attend often feel ¡§out of the loop¡¨. Please note that this evening is for parents only. Please make childcare arrangements. There is no supervision (other than YMCA Child Care described below) for students and it is unsafe for them to be wandering around the campus, especially as darkness falls. It is also difficult for you to give the teacher your full attention in you have to watch a small child, not to mention how crowded the rooms can be with one or two adults per student! The schedule for the evening is as follows:
5:30 ¡V 6:30 Preschool 6:30 ¡V 7:10 Third, Fourth & Fifth Grades 7:20 ¡V 8:00 Kindergarten, First & Second Grades
SCHOOL SCHEDULE FOR OCTOBER 7TH:

RESIDENT SUPPORT TEACHERS: Thanks to the fundraising efforts of the Friends of Malcom and all of your generosity, we have been able to hire four Resident Support Teachers this year; three are already in place and we are interviewing for the fourth slot. We invite you to visit our talented Resident Support Teachers at Back to School Night, October 7th, in Malcom¡¦s brand new Art Studio! They¡¦ll be available between 7:15 and 8:15 p.m. to meet parents and answer questions about Friends of Malcom and its innovative RST program and PTA¡¦s creative ¡§Art in Action.¡¨
SCHOOL SITE COUNCIL: Thank you to all the parents who threw their hats into the ring to be considered for the Malcom School Site Council, and thank you to all of you who sent in your ballots! The following parents will join returning parent members Diana Swanson and Stephanie Zoch on this committee: Paula Davey, Wade Johnson, Kevin Mahoney and Kerry Quinn. Our first meeting will be Tuesday, October 19th, from 2:30 ¡V 3:30 p.m. As always, the public is invited to attend.
BLOCK MUSIC INFORMATION FOR 5th GRADE PARENTS: Your child is finishing a 5 week music exploratory program which we call ¡§The Basics¡¨. During this time, students have either continued with their string study, or have experienced 5 lessons on a band instrument and 5 vocal music/choir lessons. It is now time to make a decision on which class your child attends for the rest of the school year. Information will be coming home about their three choices and how and when to rent an instrument (if they choose):
ƒ¯ Beginning Band*: This class is designed for those students wishing to start band instruction by choosing to play the flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, and trombone.
ƒ¯ Intermediate String Orchestra*: This class is designed for those students wishing to continue into orchestra for the second year playing the violin, viola, or cello.
ƒ¯ Choir: In this class, students will use their singing voices as the instrument to explore music including healthy singing techniques, ear training and music reading.
*Most students participating in these classes rent or purchase an instrument. A packet will be sent home with music stores and information. A small number of instruments may be available on a financial need basis. A letter must be submitted to the music teacher for a needs-based instrument request.
ART IN ACTION: This year our PTA has selected a NEW art program for our school instead of Art Masters. The program is called “Art in Action: Imagination Moves the Mind.” P-7 has been designed to be our school’s new art studio. If you are interested in helping instruct, there will be a Docent Training next Wednesday, October 13th for the Kindergarten and 1st grade program, 11:45 a.m. ¡V 2:05 p.m. for the 2nd and 3rd grade program, and on Thursday, October 14th from 8am- 10:30 for the 4th and 5th grade program, . The training for Docents will go over the comprehensive program that comes with a fully illustrated handbook and online lessons. Do I hear, “Yes, count me in as a Docent!” -or “Yes, count me in as a Volunteer!” -or, “Yes, I’ll be a Docent Assistant.” and finally: “Yes, I’ll be a Supply Coordinator!”
