Federal Grant Uses Data to Help Students Achieve
Capistrano Unified School District will receive a $500,000 federal stimulus grant to use data to help students graduate from high school and prepare for college, State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O’Connell announced this week. CUSD is one of 151 local educational agencies in the state that will share in more than $36 million in Enhancing Education Through Technology Competitive Grants.
“These grants will help schools use data effectively to improve student achievement and close the achievement gap,” O’Connell said. “With the state budget crisis continuing, our cash-strapped schools desperately need these funds as soon as possible so they can use education data andtechnology to better prepare students for college or careers.”
The funds will be used to purchase data scanners, computers, hand-held response systems and a test bank of standards-aligned questions. This investment will help teachers and administrators gather data to inform timely instructional changes which can target students’ educational needs, district officials said.
“Using data effectively is a key component of education. By gaining the tools to properly utilize information, our teachers and professional staff will be even more effective in providing students the instruction necessary to succeed academically,” Superintendent Joseph M. Farley said.
One major objective outlined in the district’s strategic plan is expanding the use of data-driven decision making to drive student achievement toward college and career readiness.
Funding for EETT was provided through the federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act signed into law in February 2009.
