NO SCHOOL ON FRIDAY OR MONDAY celebrating President’s Day. Happy Valentine’s Day and have a GREAT weekend!
READ ACROSS AMERICA DAY IS 2/27! Kindergarten will celebrate Read Across America Day on 3/1. Each class will do something special for Read Across America Day so stay tuned for information from your teacher. Our whole school will be able to meet Caldecott Author, Marla Frazee at an assembly on 2/27 (including Kindergarten). We sent home an order form in case you’d like to have her sign her books at the assembly. A little bit about author Marla Frazee: Marla Frazee has illustrated many acclaimed books, including All the World by Liz Garton Scanlon, which received a 2010 Caldecott Honor; Everywhere Babies by Susan Meyers; and Harriet, You’ll Drive Me Wild! by Mem Fox; as well as her own The Boss Baby; Walk On!; Roller Coaster; Santa Claus the World’s Number One Toy Expert; and A Couple of Boys Have the Best Week Ever, which received a 2009 Caldecott Honor. She is also the illustrator of the bestselling Clementine chapter book series by Sara Pennypacker. She lives with her family in Pasadena, California. Visit her at MarlaFrazee.com.
PASTA FOR PENNIES PROGRAM STARTS 2/15: Children will take home a letter and collection box on 2/19/2013 to collect coins for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Children are encouraged to collect spare change from 2/19/2013 thru 3/4/2013. Each classroom will compete against each other to win a free pasta lunch from Olive Garden. The winner of the free lunch will be announced on 3/11/2013. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society thanks you and your children in advance for helping patients with blood cancers liver better, longer lives.
TAKE YOUR FAMILY TO SCHOOL WEEK: You are invited to attend Bergeson PTA’s Take Your Family to School Week February 19th – 22nd! Take Your Family to School Week was started by National PTA to encourage PTAs and school leaders across the country to open their doors to families so that they are engaged in their child’s education and overall well-being. The timing of the week—in February—honors the day PTA was founded: February 17, 1897.
Child safety is of paramount concern for all parents. For the first time ever, Take Your Family to School Week at schools nationwide will focus on a critical issue for our nation’s youth—Safety at Home and at Play. Bergeson PTA will combine efforts with our local Safe Kids Worldwide Coalition to bring quality educational activities to students and parents, raise awareness about bike safety and home safety, and work together to achieve safer behaviors. The agenda for the week is:
Tuesday, February 19th from 3:30-4:30 – Bike Safety Fair Presented by the Laguna Niguel Police Department. Bring your bikes and helmets to the blacktop for fitting, then test your skills on the challenge course. This event is open to the public.
Thursday, February 21st from 7:45-8:15 – Parents are invited to the MPR for Mega Mini Muffin Morning. Learn about household poison prevention.
Friday, February 22nd from 6:30 – 8:30 – Bergeson PTA Variety Show at Wood Canyon Elementary. Tickets will be sold at the door for $2 per person. We have thirty very entertaining acts you are sure to enjoy. Fifth Grade Science Camp will provide refreshments for sale at intermission.
Research shows that family involvement supports student success. Students with involved parents are more likely to earn higher grades and pass their classes, attend school regularly and have better social skills and go on to postsecondary education. Family Engagement, parent-school partnerships, and child safety make up a huge part of PTA’s mission. We are very excited to see these priorities combine in 2013’s Take Your Family to School Week and we hope to see you there!

FIELD TRIPS: In public schools, whenever there is a fundraiser, a supply request or other money requested, this is always a free-will donation and you are not ever obligated to donate. Field trips are one of the only areas that we are allowed to charge for. Most of our classes attend one or two field trips per year, either on campus or off campus. When you receive the permission slip, there will be a cost attached. Sometimes it is a $5 charge for the busing and sometimes there is an admission fee. We always build in a little extra money in our budget to pay for students who cannot afford to pay for a field trip, too. We have had a few questions about this lately so we thought it would be a good time to explain this. If you have questions, please feel free to email Principal Scholl at bscholl@capousd.org.
E-WASTE COLLECTION ON MARCH 9: Did you get a new TV for Christmas? Make sure to save all of your electronic waste for our E-Waste Disposal day on the morning of Saturday, March 9. Our school is paid for all of your waste by the pound and last year’s collection made about $500 for our school. Mark your calendar and bring the old DVDs, Video Players, TV’s, Microwaves and all of it right here to the Bergeson parking lot.
SCHOOL NURSE NEWS: Our District nurse, Melinda has published a newsletter with some wonderful tips for keeping our children healthy. Click HERE.
FOOTPRINT FRIDAY continues with the collection of plastic bottles and aluminum cans. All students will receive the Bergeson Best for bringing in a bag with our thanks for your donations!
