NO REGRETS PARENTING SEMINAR AT DANA HILLS HIGH SCHOOL

The Capistrano Unified Council of PTSAs (CUCPTSA) will be hosting Dr. Harley Rotbart, professor and vice chair of pediatrics at the University of Colorado and author of the national best-selling book, No Regrets Parenting––Turning Long Days and Short Years into Cherished Moments with your Kids, Wednesday, February 20 at 6:45 p.m., in the Dana Hills High School Porthole Theater.

No Regrets Parenting is about time management with kids, from crib through college. But it’s not like other “time management books.” Those are geared for efficiency with kids rather than for intimacy with them, for organizing rather than optimizing the time parents spend with their kids. How to get everything done is not the same as how to make the time spent with kids more meaningful and memorable. This is a book about capturing the precious moments of parenting that otherwise are lost in the name of efficiency. It will guide you in taking the mundane, exhausting routines of parenthood and turning them into special parenting events. It’s all about redefining “quality time.”

Dr. Rotbart is Professor and Vice Chair of Pediatrics at the Univ. of Colorado, where he has been pediatric specialist for the past 30 years. He has been named to Best Doctors in America every year since 1996. He has more than 175 medical and scientific publications, and this is his 3rd book for parents. He serves on the Advisory Boards of Parents Magazine and Parents.com and regularly appears in major national media as an authority on child health. Visit his website: www.noregretsparenting.com. Questions? Please contact Michele Langham, malangham@att.net, or Gayle Paride, gparide@pacbell.net.

‘OVERTAKEN’ VIDEO SHOWING/PARENT INFORMATION NIGHT

On Tuesday, February 26, 2013, all Niguel Hills 8th Graders will attend an assembly to see a very powerful video called ‘Overtaken’.

The assembly will be during their social science classes. ‘Overtaken’ is an important video that highlights the crisis of youth drug abuse, which has risen to an epidemic level in our communities.

The theme is the same as another recent film, ‘Behind the Orange Curtain’. It was created by two local parents, Jodi Barber and Christine Brant, who set a goal to educate young people and save lives. The video is short (27 minutes), and addresses drug use and drug overdoses through frank interviews with young people and adults with firsthand experience in the crisis.

The filmmakers and some of the people interviewed in the movie, as well as local health professionals will be at our assembly to follow up with further information and questions the students might have about the film. In the next few weeks you will be receiving a permission slip for your child to attend the assembly.

Please sign it and have your child return it to his/her social science teacher.

Our goal in holding the assembly is to raise the awareness of our kids and to prevent further tragedies from occurring.

On Thursday, February 21, at 7:00 p.m. in the Blue Commons, we will be holding a special PTSA sponsored Parent Night that will feature a showing of the movie ‘Overtaken’, as well as guest speakers to discuss this very important topic. The creators of the movie and some of the individuals featured in the movie will be present, along with local health professionals.

Also present will be Mike Darnold, who handles Substance Abuse Interventions and Advice at Dana Hills High School.

Mike has worked with young people for many years, and will share what you as parents can do to help your kids continue to live a healthy lifestyle and avoid the pitfalls of drug abuse. They will all be there to provide information and answer your questions. If you would like to view a preview of the movie, you can see it at this link:

Although our daytime assembly is for 8th graders only, you are welcome to bring your 6th and 7th grade children with you to the parent night on February 21 if you would like them to hear the presentation. Again, we encourage your attendance at this very important parent night on the 21st.

Help me continue to help our schools by contributing to my “LET THE BEAT GO ON” project. I am collecting your old instruments and donating them to the CUSD music programs to help them meet the goal of providing free instruments for any student who wants to play a wind or string instrument. This will allow our music programs to grow and stay strong. I will pick up your old instruments from your home and donate them to the CUSD school of your choice.
