TK Program Offers Priority Enrollment
Deadline is March 29
The deadline to receive priority enrollment for the 2013-2014 Transitional Kindergarten program is March 29, 2013. Parents who submit Intent to Rnroll forms by March 29 will be more likely to be assigned to their home school or their school of choice. Intent to Register forms are available online. The school sites offering the TK Program for the 2013-2014 school year will be:Don Juan Avila, Bathgate,Truman Benedict, Crown Valley,Kinoshita, and Ladera Ranchelementary schools. Portal Gives Parental Access to Key Info
Parents Encouraged to Sign Up for Accounts
Want to access your child’s report cards online, change emergency contact information electronically, or monitor period-by-period attendance? Sign up for a Parent Portal account through your school site. In the 2013-2014 school year, parents with portal accounts will have the ability to use this online system to register for school, update student demographic and emergency contact information, view daily attendance reports, print report cards and unofficial transcripts, and download important documents directly from the portal. Please note that parent portal is NOT the same thing as School Loop. As a reminder, you need your child’s student identification number and a special access code to register with the Parent Portal. Roundups Offer Info on Kindergarten
Students Must Turn 5 by Oct. 1 to Start School in September
Families preparing to send their children off to school for the first time in the fall can visit elementary campuses in the Capistrano Unified School District (CUSD) during Kindergarten Roundup meetings in the month of February. All 36 elementary CUSD schools will hold informational meetings that will last about an hour to provide families with important information regarding kindergarten programs and enrollment. A schedule of roundup dates and times isavailable online. Families should bring proof of residence. If families intend to apply for a school of choice during the Open Enrollment period, they may attend a roundup at their preferred site.Children must be 5 years old on or before Oct. 1, 2013 to begin kindergarten. If they miss the cut-off date, they may be eligible for the District’sTransitional Kindergarten program.

Public Hearing Set for
Barcelona Hills Boundary
Trustees to Hear Recommendaions, Input
Last year, the Board of Trustees voted to close Barcelona Hills Elementary School because of decreasing neighborhood enrollment and the school’s subsequent use by a charter school. The District is now redrawing the Barcelona Hills boundaries to ensure that our schools have the resources to accommodate their assigned students. Additional information on this process and the proposed boundary change areavailable on the District website (pdf). The Board of Trustees will also conduct a public hearing on the boundary matter at its February 27, 2013, meeting, which begins at 7 p.m. The agenda for the entire meeting is available online. The meeting will be held at the Education Center, 33122 Valle Road, San Juan Capistrano. Ladera Ranch ES Wins Food
Bank’s Hunger Challenge
Donations Help Provide More Than 2,000 Meals

Ladera Ranch Elementary School(LRES) was recently named a 2012 Schools Against Hunger challenge winner by the Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County. LRES and their families won the trophy by donating 2,442 pounds of food, which equates to more than 2,035 meals for those in need. “This is a positive for the food bank and families in need,”Lorina Smith, a food resource coordinator at Second Harvest Food Bank, said. “At the same time, we want to teach students the intrinsic value of getting involved in the community to alleviate hunger.” LRES won the trophy by donating more than 17 other elementary schools participating in the challenge. Since 2003, LRES has donated nearly 15,000 pounds of food, creating nearly 12,500 meals. “We are very proud of the charitable spirit that exists in our community,” LRES Principal Dr. Amy Bryant said.

Regional PTA Awards
State Competition Takes Place in April
Artwork of four Capistrano Unified School District (CUSD) students has won Awards of Excellence in the Fourth District PTA Reflections contest, making them eligible to compete for a statewide award, Ryan Meali, a 2nd grader at Philip Reilly Elementary School, won the primary level award for film production; Aurea Jolly, a 2nd grader at Bathgate Elementary School, earned top honors at the primary level of dance choreography; Delaney Shanley, a 5th grader at Vista Del Mar K-8 School, won dance choreography at the intermediate level; and Delaney Miller, a 5th grader at Concordia Elementary School, claimed the top prize in musical composition at the intermediate level. The students will represent the District and Fourth District PTA, which includes all of Orange County and parts of Los Angeles County, in the state competition, which will be held in April.

New Year with Fundraiser
Parents Support Mandarin Immersion Program
Friends of MIP, the non-profit parent organization created to raise funds, support, and advocate for Orange County’s first public school Mandarin Immersion Program, will hold its 2nd Annual Chinese New Year event on Saturday, March 9 at the Bower’s Museum in Santa Ana. This dinner event will feature a Casino night theme, with both a silent and a live auction. More than 225 people attended last year’s event, raising $44,000 to support the Mandarin Immersion Program. Advanced tickets are on sale now at www.friendsofmip.com. Funds raised at the event will support the Mandarin language curriculum at Marian Bergeson Elementary School in Laguna Niguel.

Community Meeting to Offer Information to Parents

Open Enrollment Allows
Choice of Schools, Programs
Students, Families Can Find Best Academic Fit
Students in the Capistrano Unified School District can apply to one of 46 different academic programs during the annual Open Enrollment period that begins next month for language immersion elementary schools and in March for other programs. Applications will be available online at www.capousd.org, at local schools, and at the District Education Center, 33122 Valle Road, San Juan Capistrano. The application period for the language programs in Spanish and Mandarin will run from Monday, Feb. 4 to Friday, Feb. 22. The general Open Enrollment window for other open schools will be Monday, March 4 to Friday, March 29. Completed applications must be turned in between 8 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. either at the school to which the child is applying or at the District Education Center (33122 Valle Rd., San Juan Capistrano). Applications for the Spanish and Mandarin language programs can only be turned in at the school of choice.-more-

Dates for Open House Nights
Events Provide Parents Opportunity to Review Student Work
Schools in the Capistrano Unified School District have announced dates for their annual Open House nights, which will take place throughout the spring. Open House is an opportunity for parents to visit their child’s classroom and see some of the work that has been accomplished during the school year, Dr. Julie Hatchel, Assistant Superintendent, Education Services, said. “We look on this as an opportunity for parents to see the progress their student is making academically while giving them another opportunity to interact with teachers and understand what goes on in the classroom,” Hatchel said. “We definitely encourage parents to take part in the exciting evenings our schools have planned.” Open House events are scheduled from January to June.
