‘ADOPT A MARINE’ – news from Corpus Christi Christian Community

Date:

Hey DADs….
The registration forms for our next POPs event: ‘POPs Does Pucks’…a Duck’s Hockey game on Friday, November 27th (the day after Thanksgiving) are now out on the Concierge Shelves. The game starts at 1:00 p.m. and tickets are $17.00 each. So dads…instead of hitting the malls on ‘Black Friday’, how about grabbing your kids and escaping to Anaheim and watch the Ducks take on the Chicago Blackhawks? Reservation forms need to be returned by November 9th! Thanks.

As autumn deepens, we honor those who have brightened our lives…and now shine in heaven…
Walking amidst the Christmas-filled glamour of Costco aisles, it would be easy to miss the weekend of October 31 – November 1 when we will commemorate All Saints and All Souls. November 1st, occurring as it does on a Sunday, we will be commemorating All Saints at ALL the weekend Masses. As is our tradition, we will also be commemorate ALL our beloved dead, be they official saints or simply saintly in our hearts, at all the Masses that weekend. Please note that we will commemorate All Souls Day on Monday, November 2nd with Mass at 8:00 a.m. Special All Souls envelopes are available on the Concierge Shelves by which you can list the names of your own cherished loved ones/family members you wish remembered at the Masses throughout November. Thanks.

Christi Kids Club and Clubhouse Fall 2009 Session has begun! But it’s not too late to join up . . .Christi Kids Club for our K through 3rd graders and Clubhouse for our 4th and 5th graders. In addition to all the fun arts and crafts and outreach activities we offer to K through 3rd graders, Christi Kids upper classmen (4th and 5th graders) meet downstairs for music, bible study and cool games and time to hang out with our high school Havenites. This is a great way to decompress with friends after school and get to know your fellow Corpus Christi pals. The fun is happening Wednesdays, from 4:00 to 5:30 pm, beginning September 30th through December 16th, 2009. K through 3rd grade meet in the Good Shepherd room, 4th and 5th graders meet downstairs. Christi Kids Club is like a second neighborhood, where our Corpus Christi kids can meet and grow in their faith together. Sign your child up for this one-of-a-kind program! Registration forms are available on the concierge tables and in the Good Shepherd/Childcare room, or by contacting Peggy Armenta at peggyarmenta@corpuschristialisoviejo.org (949) 389-9209.

No trick or treat, Daylight Savings Time ends at midnight on October 31st!

Thanksgiving will be here before you know it….

Our annual Parish Thanksgiving Dinner is a wonderfully huge success. Over the years we have heard assorted well-meaning suggestions to charge $5 or $10 per person….and we have always refused…as we continue to do. There are certain events that should NOT be fund raisers but simply be opportunities for our family to come together and take pleasure in who we are. Throughout the year we endeavor to have a range of fund-raising efforts that span the financial range, from low end (the bootstraps burrito sale) to high end (the Wine and Food Festival Dinner. In between we sprinkle a variety of ‘freebies’ that add sparkle to our parish life: our Anniversary Receptions, Margarita Night….and our Thanksgiving Dinner. This year’s dinner will again be hosted on the Monday of Thanksgiving Week, November 23rd and Scotty Eisenbart will again be coordinating. If you would like to volunteer to be part of Scotty’s Kitchen Team, please make contact with him at: 395-3073. Something NEW that we WILL be starting this year is a more orderly manner of setting up the tables on Sunday, November 22nd. In past years it has become something of a madhouse rush as people depart from noon mass and people are moving in with tables….snarls are exchanged, mean-spirited looks are thrown around…it is a depressing way to initiate a week of ‘Giving Thanks.’ So…..in order to calm our savage beasts and become a bit more organized….while the chairs will still be emptied from the Grand Hall following the Noon Mass on the 22nd, TABLES WILL NOT BE ALLOWED IN THE Grand Hall UNTIL 3:00 p.m….and they WILL BE SET UP IN AN ORGANIZED MANNER!!!! As in the past, all our parish tables, round and rectangular, will be used, including the eight additional rounds of 10 we just bought. So…start making your plans…and what you are going to bring to the most fabulous feast of the year….THANKSGIVING!

Looking for a way to make your Thanksgiving dinner even more special?
Why not host a Marine from Camp Pendleton for dinner?
Being away from home for the first time, Thanksgiving can be a tough day for some of the Marines at Camp Pendleton. If you would like to ‘ADOPT A MARINE’ for Thanksgiving Day and Dinner please contact Nina, Suzanne or Rachel at the Camp Pendleton Armed Services YMCA (760-385-4921) to get on their list. Generally you pick up your Marines (usually two per family) at around 8:00 a.m. and must return them to base by 5:00 p.m. so it does require an earlier than usual Thanksgiving Dinner. When you see how young they are (18-21) and hear their stories your heart will be a lot fuller than your stomachs! At the end of the day, the truest form of patriotism is recognizing that, regardless of politics, creed or color….we are all citizens of one country…and hosting some other American’s son or daughter for Thanksgiving is one way to stand tall and truly be the UNITED States. Thanks for considering the sharing of your heart as well as your table. FKB

On the weekend of November 7-8, Concern America will return with unique, quality handcrafted items for sale. Inspired by nature, their inventory has been refreshed with a number of new crafts and deisgns; textiles, ceramics and wood products honor indigenous traditions. By purchasing from Concern America you help income for materially poor communities, human scale endeavors, eco-friendly work patterns and fair working conditions. You may always find out more about Concern America by calling 714-953-8575.
The ‘Flowers for Our Lady’ ministry replaces the fresh flowers twice a week in the vases near the painting of ‘Our Lay of Guadalupe’. We are looking for a few new volunteers to help with this ministry. We rotate the responsibility for removing the prior week’s flowers and replacing those with fresh new ones. Please join us. It’s a great way to give back to Corpus Christi, honor Our Blessed Mother, and keep the church looking bright! If you are interested, please contact Mary Miyamoto (949-770-4102) or miyamoto@cox.net.

Our Corpus Christi Book Club is always looking for more opinions. Please join us on Monday, November 2, at 7:00 P.M., in Room 4. We have a selection again this month, choose as many as you’d like: The Hour I First Believed by Wally Lamb, Shanghai Girls by Lisa See and Prayers for Sale by Sandra Dallas.

With the holidays approaching (got your Halloween candy yet?), this would be a good time to make sure you have your Von’s or Ralph’s Affinity/Club Card registered so that Corpus Christi automatically gets a few pennies on every dollar you spend! It costs you nothing and only takes a few minutes on the computer to get registered. Information is available on the Concierge Shelves on how to do it….and once you do it….every time you use your card, we benefit (at no cost to you!!) Thanks. Also, with the holidays coming up, if you have any large orders for SCRIP gifts, this would be a good time to inform our SCRIP team so that they can be ordered. Grazie.
A word of thanks for YOUR Hands Across the County Outreach: My name is Jeff Kim and I am the assistant principal over at Dale Junior High School. I wanted to thank you for your big heart in caring for our kids and community. Your school supplies have brought joy to many students and families who are in need. There are times I have to confiscate their personal folders because of gang-related graffiti. When I offer them a new binder on behalf of Corpus Christi, it’s like a fresh start. It’s always nice to have that fresh start after a mistake. Thank you for your partnership with our school =)
