MAUDE ON THE MOVE: After being in SeaWorld’s care for more than 16 months, Maude, a Pacific green sea turtle, was fully nursed to health and was returned to the ocean on June 21. After spending several weeks slowing swimming north along the coast, Maude has headed out to sea. She’s now about 300 miles west of California’s central coast heading north by north west. Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute continues to get periodic signals from the satellite tracking device attached to her shell. The new Turtlelink touch-screen map at SeaWorld’s Turtle Reef attraction allows guests to check on the status of turtles rescued by SeaWorld, including Maude.
CONSERVATION GRANTS HIT CLOSE TO HOME: Animals in need and endangered species around the world will benefit from more than $1 million in grants awarded by the non-profit SeaWorld & Busch Gardens Conservation Fund. Since its creation eight years ago, the Fund has granted more than $8 million to protect wildlife and wild places. The Fund approved grants to more than 100 wildlife protection projects including programs to reintroduce endangered cheetahs to the African wild, protect sea turtle nests across the world, educate and connect kids with the ocean, and help restore America’s fragile coasts. The Ocean Foundation of San Diego was granted funds for the Ocean Connectors program which gives school children in San Diego and Mexico the opportunity to witness and learn about marine life firsthand. Students receive presentations on sea turtle biology and conservation, and attend field trips to see real sea turtles in the wild. Students also participate in habitat restoration and service-learning activities to actively improve their natural surroundings. For more information please visit www.swbg-conservationfund.org.
