Ballona Wetlands Ecological Reserve Community Event
Featuring guided tours of the reserve and information about the
Ballona Wetlands Public Gateways and Trails Project
WHAT: Community open house is an opportunity to learn about the Ballona Wetlands Ecological Reserve and provide input on proposed access points, trails and restoration efforts. Guided tours of the reserve will be provided on the site’s history, local plants and animals, and restoration plans.
WHO: This event is hosted by the Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority, in partnership with the California Department of Fish and Game, the California State Coastal Conservancy and the Santa Monica Bay Restoration Commission.
WHY: The Ballona Wetlands Access Points and Trails Project is the initial phase in a long-term restoration effort, providing the first opportunity for unguided general public to enter the Ballona Wetlands Ecological Reserve. This open house invites community members to visit the wetlands and provide input on the proposed improvements to public access.
The project will provide safe and easy public access to encourage greater recreational use and will feature nature trails and overlooks to view the wetlands.
Improvements will help increase the public’s understanding and awareness of the greater Santa Monica Bay Watershed and wetland’s native plants and animals. Longer-term efforts will include further restoration of the site and an additional, enhanced system of recreational trails.
WHEN: Saturday, May 8, 2010, 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
WHERE: Meeting places for the event will be the Ballona Wetlands Ecological Reserve public access gateways located at:
13720 Fiji Way, Marina del Rey, CA 90292 (Across the street from Fisherman’s Village)
303 Culver Blvd., Playa del Rey, CA 90293 (Behind Gordon’s Market)
Guided tours will be departing from each gateway at 9:30 a.m., 10:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.
