A Blessed Easter and Passover to all of our Bergeson Families!  Happy Spring Break to all, too!

SPRING BREAK APRIL 9-13:  All CUSD campuses will be closed during the week of Monday, April 9 through Friday, April 13. Students return to school on Monday, April 16.

E-WASTE RECYCLING ON MAY 4: Please save up your electronics so that you can recycle them at our school on May 4 between 10 AM to 4 PM.  Any of those large, big fat TVs that you don’t want, the large computer monitors that you have in your garage after you upgraded to the flat screen, or any other electronics.  Our school will get paid per pound as a donation to our school and we appreciate your donation.  For an additional small fee, computers can be wiped clean of all of their memory so that your personal information is erased. You can check out the website for more information:  http://absolutegreenrecycling.com/

ATTENTION 4TH GRADE PARENTS: On April 24th at 6.30 in the MPR please come and meet Thousand Pines Science Camp Representative, Christian Day. He will give a presentation about camp and answer any questions. 4th grade students are also encouraged to attend, but no siblings please.

KONA ICE IS COMING! Back by popular demand, Kona Ice will be at school every Friday at pick up until the end of the school year. All proceeds benefit 5th grade Science camp.

WILD ABOUT BERGESON SCHOOL FUNDRAISER: Thank you so much to those who attended this beautiful event.  Our school raised $12,000 to help support our programs and we truly appreciate this gift.  A special thank you goes out to Nicole Queen (and Nicole’s mom, Kristi) and to Sandy Marshall who chaired this amazing event.  Thank you also to Tammy Orrill, president and all of the helpers from the Bergeson Foundation.  Bergeson parents ROCK!

5th GRADE PARENT INVITATION: Aliso Viejo Middle School cordially invites you to the Incoming 6th Grade Parent Night which will be Wednesday, April 18 at 6:30 p.m. in the AVMS MPR.

INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL AT SOKA UNIVERSITY: Saturday, May 5 from 10:30 AM to 5:30 PM there is a free festival at SOKA University with 900 musicians and dancers on 3 stages.  There will be international food and again, it’s free!  There is free parking at the Ziggurat Building with shuttles every 30 minutes.

CUSD VIRTUAL SCHOOL: Capistrano Unified School District announces the opening of its newest educational option, Capistrano Virtual School.  Capistrano Virtual School opens this Fall and offers online classes for kindergarten through eighth grade students.  Parents are invited to attend an information meeting on May 1 at 6:30 p.m. at the CUSD District Office located at 33122 Valle Road, San Juan Capistrano.  Please see the attached flyer for details.  http://virtual-capousd-ca.schoolloop.com/

CUSD HOME SCHOOL: Are you interested in homeschooling your kindergarten through 8th grade student? Capistrano Unified School Districts offers a home school option.  Capistrano Home School provides parents all of the textbooks, workbooks and instructional materials families need to teach their children at home.  Parents are provided with a monthly plan for every subject and the support of CUSD teachers to help them throughout the year.  Parents interested in homeschooling are invited to attend one of the Parent Preview Days scheduled throughout the spring.  Please see the attached flyer for details.  http://homeschool-capousd-ca.schoolloop.com/

LUNCH & SNACK HISTORY ONLINE: If your child buys CUSD lunches and/or snacks at LRES, click here to view your child’s lunch and/or snack transaction history online.  You’ll need to enter your child’s 7-digit student/lunch ID to access this information.  The website, which is through CUSD Food and Nutrition Services, will show you the lunch account balance for your child, and a day-by-day listing of lunch purchases (non-specific) and snack purchases (specific, such as “fish crackers”).

2012-2013 FALL REGISTRATION PACKETS for Students new to Bergeson: Online registration for next year is now available for students who will be new to Bergeson.  After you enroll online, come to the office to pick up and fill out a packet with your two proofs of residency.  You will need a current mortgage or rental agreement along with a utility bill (we are only allowed to accept gas/water/electric) which reflects an address in our attendance area.  Please note that the on-line registration process is only available to students who have never been enrolled in the Capistrano Unified School District.  If your child was in a CUSD pre-school, you will still need to go onto the district website to enroll them online.  We will still need parents to stop by and fill out a few extra forms and the two proofs of residency, birth certificate and immunizations must be verified!  Go to www.capousd.org to register.

SIGN UP FOR THE PARENT PORTAL: The CUSD Parent Portal is now available for all parents of K-12 students. We strongly encourage parents to register for a Parent Portal account because in the future through the use of Parent Portal, we are looking to provide parents with the ability to re-register students in summer, update student demographic records (emergency cards), print report cards, and download important documents directly from the portal.  The Parent Portal information was shared with elementary parents at parent conferences in November but if you can’t find your copy, attendance clerk, Angel Newell can print you a new one.  Parents should log onto https://abi.capousd.org where you will find directions and a link for creating your Parent Portal account. A HELP link is included in case you have any questions.

AFTER-SCHOOL CLASS SIGN-UPS for the next session are coming up now and there are LOTS of different classes on the list.  Sign up at:  http://www.cusd-ace.org

AFTER-SCHOOL ART CLASS: Don’t forget to sign up for “Exploring the World of Art” after school class which starts the Wednesday after spring break 4/16. The class is 8 weeks long ending on 6/6. In this one hour class, your kids will do a variety of projects using different mediums such as clay, paint, fibers and more! A flyer is coming home in student backpacks. 2012 LONG BEACH DRAGON BOAT FESTIVAL: Plan on a great family day and come cheer for Friends of MIP as we race in our own Dragon Boat!  The Long Beach Dragon Boat Festival will be held at Marine Stadium on July 28 – 29.  This event is one of the largest dragon boat competitions in California and there also will be Chinese traditional art demonstrations, Chinese Acrobats, traditional dance, hip hop, music and martial arts performances.  Friends of MIP is currently building our coed team and need 18 paddlers, with a minimum of 6 females.  All are welcome to participate!  If you are looking for a fun way to help MIP, be a part of our 1st Dragon Boat showing and paddle with us.  We would also love to enter a general Bergeson Elementary School team.  Students rowing would have to be 12 and under with the minimum age of 8.  Participants do NOT need to be part of the MIP program or enrolled at Bergeson.  It’s also a great opportunity for MIP older siblings to get involved.  Contact audrey_shaw@friendsofmip.com for more information.  For Festival information, please go to www.lbdragonboat.com.

STAR TESTING NEWS: Even though our testing window is still a couple months away, May 7 – May 25, it is important for us to start thinking of ways to better prepare our students.  One way the teachers are helping students is to provide direct practice with sample CST questions.  This teaching tool helps to familiarize students with the format of the test.  This is very important, especially with 2nd graders who are taking the CST test for the first time and for any other child with test anxiety.  Parents were very interested in what they could do as well.  The following two links will provide you with that information.  Pay close attention to the format of the written expression questions.

IN LINE ~ ON TIME: Congratulations to the late birds in Mrs. Werner’s class for their 17 days with no tardies and no absences so that they received the popsicle party for their PERFECT ATTENDANCE class award.  So proud of you!

SHINING STARS: Don’t forget to fill out an application in the office for a child who has completed some Community Service so that they can receive their Shining Star at the Friday Flag Ceremony.  All of our Shining Stars will have their Star in the MPR for the whole school year.  Kids feel good when they give to others.  Let’s teach them this valuable lesson at an early age.

CELEBRATION BOOKS: For $20, you can donate a book to our Bergeson library in honor of your child.  Donation forms are in the front office.  You or your child can pick the book out of some books that we have pre-ordered.  This is a wonderful way to celebrate a child’s birthday or other special event and Mrs. Scholl will present the book to the child in front of the whole school at the morning flag ceremony.  We have received a whole new order of library books to choose from for our Celebration book orders.  You can order them early and we will save them until the birthday or big event happens, too. Thank you to the following families for their donation to our library:

Lauren Battle – Mrs. Horning/Mrs. Jones Class – In honor of Lauren’s 11th Birthday!

Connor Brandt – Mrs. Wortman’s Class – In honor of Connor’s Birthday!
