BULLDOG FAMILY RESTORED!
We had a great day at school yesterday with all of our teachers and students back in “the house”! Absence makes the heart grow fonder and we are fond of our teachers and thankful that the district and union leadership settled the disputes. The full text of the news release is at the bottom of this email with a few more details about the settlement. Thank you to all of our parents for your patience throughout the course of these last few days. Your encouraging emails, comments and notes are greatly appreciated!

IN LINE ~ ON TIME
We only need to say these words as a reminder to get back into the good habits and be at school on time. No tardies were marked today but Wednesday, we’re back to marking those tardies at the 7:45 AM bell. Please be in line on the blacktop!

USED BOOK SALE THIS THURSDAY AND FRIDAY
Our PTA Used Book sale has been rescheduled to THIS Thursday and Friday before and after school 4/29 and 4/30. The PTA is selling these books and all proceeds will go toward paying for our science lab next year. Please come by and check it out.

MOTHER’S DAY BREAKFAST
HEY KIDS! ASK YOUR MOM OUT TO BREAKFAST FOR MOTHER’S DAY! The flyer will be sent home THIS week for our Bergeson Mother’s Day breakfast at Mimi’s Café in their Garden Room on Saturday, May 8 at 8 AM. Kids and mom will have a very special breakfast together which includes a rose for mom. $20 for mom (grandmother or guardian) and $15 for kids will include a full breakfast and the fixin’s. We can only accommodate 150 so get your reservation in as soon as you get the flyer. Dad’s can stay home to take care of the honey-do list! This event is sponsored by our Bergeson Foundation. Don’t delay since there’s a limited amount of space!

LOST AND FOUND
The Lost and Found items will be placed all along the Kindergarten fence on Thursday and Friday since we have LOTS of jackets, sweatshirts and other items which belong to our Bulldogs. We will be donating the remainder of the items to a local charity on Friday afternoon after school so make sure to stop by and see if there’s anything that you’ve been missing.

STAR TESTING
STAR testing for grades 2 – 5 will take place during the week of May 10 – 14. Mark your calendar so that we make sure all students are at school with lots of rest and a good breakfast so that they can show off their talents and how much they’ve learned over the course of one year.

NEW FURLOUGH DAYS
These furlough days are a part of a cost-saving measure for our school district so please mark your calendar:
– Furlough Day on Friday, May 28 – NO SCHOOL
– Memorial Day Holiday on Monday, May 31 – NO SCHOOL

TEACHERS AND SCHOOL DISTRICT RESOLUTION
Tentative Agreement Reached Between CUEA and CUSD

We are pleased to announce that the Capistrano Unified School District (CUSD) Board of Trustees has entered into a tentative agreement with the Capistrano Unified Education Association (CUEA). The agreement is the product of countless hours of collaboration on the part of both CUSD and CUEA representatives.

The 3-year agreement maintains previous cuts presented by the Board of Trustees, and includes language that will restore teacher pay based on an agreed upon formula should CUSD receive additional revenue. The restoration language also respects the negotiating positions of the other employee bargaining units and, most importantly, maintains valuable educational programs for our students.

In summary, the tentative agreement:

• Maintains the terms of the resolution passed by the CUSD Board of Trustees on March 31, 2010 and enters these terms into the current CUEA contract.

• Allows the district to fulfill its fiduciary responsibility and meet its multi-year fiscal solvency requirements.

• Gives assurance of the rights and responsibilities of CUEA members with an approved contract through June 30, 2012, providing consistency and stability for the bargaining unit and district.

• Provides the ability to restore teacher compensation cuts based on revenue increases while maintaining fiscal responsibility, accounting for the increased operational costs of the district, and enabling all employees to be treated equitably.

• Acknowledges that both CUEA and CUSD will drop all unfair labor practice charges and legal issues related to the recent impasse to enable the district to save fiscal and human resources and encourage parties to move forward in the spirit of cooperation.

The process of labor negotiations has been a challenge for all involved, including our teachers, support staff, administrators, trustees, parents and students. Labor law requires parties to follow a deliberate and methodical process to reach agreement on contract issues. These laws also prevent the district from communicating specific details regarding the progress of negotiations with CUEA throughout much of the process.

We are pleased to finally bring closure to the negotiations process in a manner which will protect the educational programs enjoyed by the students in our district.
