Boys & Girls Clubs around the U.S. dedicate one week during the year as National Boys & Girls Club Week to highlight the wonderful programs and the talented staff Clubs offer to support the children in their community. The Boys & Girls Club of Laguna Beach planned extraordinary activities that included special guest speakers, knock your socks off science experiments, outrageous gym activities and unforgettable member vs. staff game room tournaments.
Boys & Girls Club Week commenced on Monday, March 22 with special guest speaker and photographer Sue Rosoff. Sue shared a message that encouraged members to look at the world in unique ways, how to capture artistic moments all around them and then graciously presented members with a piece from her personal photographic collection. She concluded with an Ansel Adams quote by saying, ¡§Chance favors the prepared mind¡¨- which many children interpreted as ¡§know your craft¡¨-anything a person might want to do well in their life.
Dragon Fly Quest science club exhibited their favorite experiment with Mentos„¶ and a 2 liter bottle of soda. The children in the front row were caught by surprise when the solution produced ¡§a geyser¡¨ and sprayed them with a sticky mess.
The Breakers teen club heard from Kim De St. Paer, board member of the Laguna Beach HIV Advisory. She shared with our teens a message of awareness and the importance of creating a global community and support for people living with HIV or those affected by it. This deeply moving message helped our teens realize the enormous effort necessary to help people with this condition, and more importantly how preventative measures assure a healthy future.
The staff members then enjoyed beating the kids at games like; pool and card game tournaments, but were pleasantly surprised when the kids battled back to defeat the staff in a game of pop culture trivia. It was a fun week from start to finish and a wonderful way to show the members and their families why the Boys & Girls Club of Laguna Beach is so special and how fortunate the community is to have such an eclectic and talented group working at the club.
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Laguna Beach provides over 30 engaging and enriching after school and summer programs that help build character, creativity, academic success, healthy behaviors and teamwork in young people. The Annual Club Membership fee is only $150 and $50 monthly program fees. The Club serves 5-18 year olds from Laguna Beach, Aliso Viejo, Laguna Hills, Dana Point, and the surrounding communities.
