High Schools Ranked Among the Best
Newsweek/The Daily Beast List Top 1,000
Five of Capistrano Unified School District’s high schools are among the best in the nation, according to rankings released by Newsweek and The Daily Beast. San Clemente (No. 380), Aliso Niguel (No. 440), Dana Hills (No. 678), Capistrano Valley (No. 734), and San Juan Hills (No. 900) high schools each cracked the list of the country’s Top 1,000 high schools. Tesoro High School was not asked to submit data for the Newsweek evaluation. This is the second time within the month that a national news organization has ranked District high schools among the nation’s best. The Newsweek/The Daily Beast rankings analyzed four-year, on-time graduation rate, percentage of graduates accepted to college, Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) tests taken per student, average SAT or ACT scores, average AP or IB test scores, and the number of AP or IB courses offered per student. More than 2,300 schools were assessed to produce the Top 1,000 schools.-more-

In Remembrance: Former Superintendent Truman Benedict
Helped Create Capistrano Unified School District
Former superintendent Truman Benedict passed away on Wednesday afternoon, the San Clemente Times reported. He was 89. Mr. Benedict began teaching seventh and eighth grades at Las Palmas School in 1948. He eventually served as a principal and then superintendent of the former San Clemente Elementary School District, when he helped create the Capistrano Unified School District in 1965. From 1969-1975, Mr. Benedict served as superintendent of the Capistrano Unified School District. After his retirement, he served on the San Clemente City Council from 1990 to 1994, serving as mayor in 1992. In 1987, CUSD named a San Clemente elementary school in his name, Truman Benedict Elementary School in Forster Ranch. Mr. Benedict routinely volunteered his time in the classroom and talked with students for many years. Mr. Benedict also continued to help the District, lending support to the successful Measure A school construction bond in 1999.-more-

Students Entering 7th Grade Need Proof of Tdap Vaccination
State Law Mandates Whooping Cough Booster Shot
|
|
|
Students entering 7th grade need to show proof of a Tdap vaccination.
|
Students entering the 7th grade in the 2012-2013 school year will need proof of an adolescent whooping cough booster immunization for school in the fall. The new requirement, signed into law in 2010, comes after California experienced its worst outbreak of pertussis in more than 50 years, with more than 9,000 confirmed cases and 10 infant deaths. The new immunization requirement is intended to help reduce the spread of whooping cough among California’s youth. Most children are fully protected prior to entering kindergarten because of the DTaP vaccine, a vaccine made for younger children. However, protection to these diseases wears off and preteens and teens may be at risk for catching this dangerous disease without a booster. The Tdap requirement affects all incoming 7th grade students in California, so it’s important to avoid the back-to-school rush and to get our children vaccinated now. Tell other parents with children in the 6th grade about the requirement and encourage them to schedule the shot early, before summer. More information can be found on the Health Services webpage.
