District Adds Teaching Days, Reduces Furloughs
Capistrano Unified School District will reinstate two days of instruction into the 2010-11 school calendar, officials announced this week. The days were restored according to negotiated agreements with employee groups. They were scheduled to be non-working furlough days for the District’s employees. The reinstatement stems from a negotiated agreement that required that the instructional days be restored should there be any increase in district income in the final state budget. While the District continues to be challenged by severe fiscal restraints, there was a slight increase in per child state funding that triggered restoration provisions of the agreements. School will be in session on Thursday, Feb. 17, 2011 and Friday, May 27, 2011, days that had been eliminated from the District’s instructional calendar because of budget cuts.
Open Enrollment Information Available on Website
Open Enrollment information for the 2011-2012 school year is now available on the District website. Families can apply to have their student attend a school with openings during the application period. For the first time, Two-Way Dual Immersion (TWI) schools will have a separate application period, which will run from Feb. 1 – 11, 2011. Open enrollment for non-TWI schools will take place March 1 – 11, 2011. Applications for TWI schools are only available at the school site. Applications for non-TWI schools will be available online or at the District office on March 1, 2011.
Schools Announce Kindergarten Roundup Dates
Interested parents and families can get more information on kindergarten by attending the annual roundup at their local school site. All of the roundup meetings will take place in the month of February. A complete list of schools with dates and times can be found online.
District Ahead of Federal Healthy Meals Trend
Cafeterias in CUSD schools are transitioning towards more whole grains ahead of a recent federal law aimed at creating healthy meals for students. The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act requires the U.S. Department of Agriculture to come up with more healthful options for students. Schools will receive about 6 cents more per meal to help with the transition. The CUSD Food and Nutrition Services department is already working toward that goal. See Patch.com for the full story.
Schools Closed for Winter Holiday Break
CUSD schools will be closed from Monday, Dec. 20, 2010 until Friday, Dec. 31, 2010. School resumes on Monday, Jan. 3, 2011. District offices will be open Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and closed on Thursday and Friday of both holiday weeks. For more information, call the District switchboard at (949) 234-9200.
