New Principal Appointed at Newhart Middle
The Capistrano Unified School District (CUSD) Board of Trustees this week appointed Jeff Jones, an administrator at Marco Forster Middle School, as principal of Newhart Middle School. Jones succeeds former principal George Knights, who moved to the Newport-Mesa School District to accept a district-level leadership position. Jones has been a middle school teacher and administrator since 1997. He graduated from San Diego State University with a bachelor’s degree in social science and has a master’s degree in educational administration from National University.
First Community Forum Held at Capo Valley HS
Superintendent Joseph M. Farley held the first of six community forums this week at Capistrano Valley High School. Students and community members from the CVHS family (or feeder pattern) were invited to listen to information about the district and ask questions on a variety of subjects. The next stop on Farley’s “Back to the Classroom” tour will be on Tuesday, Nov. 16 at San Juan Hills High School. The meeting begins at 7 p.m.
San Clemente HS to Pilot Skateboarding Course
Students at San Clemente High School can now grind their way though physical education. The Board approved a pilot physical education elective called Skateboarding for the 2010-2011 school year. The city of San Clemente has offered the use of Ralph’s Skate Court for the class.
ROP CEO ‘Changes Course’
After 12 years, Dr. Rick Bogart is retiring as Chief Executive Officer of the Capistrano-Laguna Beach Regional Occupational Program. The program, a joint-powers authority of the Capistrano Unified School District and the Laguna Beach Unified School District, serves 4,000 in more than 100 career-oriented classes.
Dana Hills, Capo Valley Students Need Your Votes
Students at Dana Hills and Capistrano Valley high schools want local residents to help them click and text to victory in national contests that could net thousands of dollars in funds to upgrade technology at each of the campuses. At Dana Hills High School (DHHS), the Be the Change Club is competing for $250,000 through the Pepsi Refresh Project to improve the school’s computer labs. To vote for the Dana Hills High School project, text 103341 to 73774 or visit the contest page. The contest ends on Sunday, Oct. 31. Supporters can vote once a day by text and once a day by computer. Capistrano Valley High School (CVHS) is competing to win either a $50,000 grant or one of three $20,000 awards through the “Power a Bright Future” contest sponsored by Clorox. To vote, visit the contest page. Votes will be accepted through Monday, Nov. 1. Fans must register and may vote once a day.
Fundraisers Bring Food, Fun to Local Communities
Capistrano Valley and Aliso Niguel high schools will benefit from fundraisers that feature food from local restaurants. The first Taste of Capo is Thursday, Oct. 21 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the CVHS mall. At the event, about 20 local restaurants will provide sampling plates to ticket holders. Attendees can also win a variety of prizes, including lunch with Mission Viejo Mayor Patricia Kelley.
Taste of Aliso Niguel celebrates its fourth year on Saturday, Oct. 23 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at 101 Enterprise in Aliso Viejo. This adult-only event (must be 21 to attend) features food samples from great local restaurants, incredible wine tasting and beer. Attendees will enjoy the sounds of accomplished local musicians.
CARE Foundation Events Support Schools
The 17th Annual CARE Foundation’s Golf Classic will be held on Monday, Nov. 8 at El Niguel Country Club in Laguna Niguel. Registration, putting contest and silent auction bidding begin at 10 a.m. At 11:30 a.m. will be the shotgun start.
