National Alcohol Screening Day® on April 9, 2009

Do you know the one that is one too many?
National Alcohol Screening Day® on April 9, 2009

Parties , happy hour at the bar around the corner…

Pressures to drink are everywhere. For many people, it can be hard to know how much is too much and when the line is crossed between the use and abuse of alcohol.

Approximately four in five college students drink alcohol, and about two in five engage in binge drinking – defined as consuming five or more drinks in a row for men and four or more in a row for women- according to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA).

Binge drinking can put people at risk for many serious problems, ranging from car crashes to date rape, but even mild and moderate alcohol consumption can have harmful consequences on social relationships and your health.

In an effort to address excessive drinking, the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence-Orange County/Community Alliance Network is promoting National Alcohol Screening Day (NASD). NASD is a one-day education and screening event designed to raise awareness on how alcohol affects health, help people evaluate their alcohol use; and provide referrals to local treatment and support resources for those who need further evaluation.

As part of the screening day event, people can take an anonymous on-line survey at alcoholscreening.org, and access educational information on the dangers of alcohol abuse, and seek referrals of locations that offer one-on-ones with a health professional.

“Many people are unaware of when to draw the line between the use and abuse of alcohol. The focus of National Alcohol Screening Day is to give the community the facts they need to figure out how much is too much and how alcohol is affecting their lives. Most people drink responsibly, but too many do not realize the potential costs of at-risk drinking, the signs of alcohol poisoning, or how even a moderate amount of alcohol can interact with common medications and affect their everyday lives.

National Alcohol Screening Day is a program of the non-profit Screening for Mental Health® (SMH). For additional information about alcohol or the screening program, visit http://www.nationalalcoholscreeningday.org

SEA LIFE™ Aquarium Adopts Tamarack State Beach for Creek to Bay Cleanup

CARLSBAD, Calif. (April 8, 2009) – SEA LIFE Aquarium loves a clean San Diego and to prove it, the family Aquarium located next door to LEGOLAND California is adopting Tamarack State Beach for the seventh annual Creek to Bay Cleanup on April 25. From 9 a.m. to noon, volunteers will clean this famous stretch of beach while enjoying family-friendly activities, educational demonstrations and prizes.

“At SEA LIFE we strive to teach children the importance of keeping our oceans and streams clean – this is such a great opportunity for us to reach out to the community and show that we mean it, all while having some fun,” said Dirk Westfall, Assistant Curator of SEA LIFE Aquarium and team leader for the cleanup.

The Creek to Bay Cleanup is a countywide event coordinated by I Love a Clean San Diego. Volunteers have the opportunity to choose from over 60 cleanup sites spanning San Diego’s beaches, waterways, canyons and parks. Last year more than 4,000 volunteers removed 170,806 pounds of debris from more than 150 miles of coastline and inland areas.

SEA LIFE Aquarium is adopting the stretch of beach from the warm water jetties, just south of Tamarack Avenue to Frazee Beach, near Carlsbad Village Drive. Volunteers are asked to register online at www.creektobay.org and to bring a completed waiver with them to the event. For maps and details on parking and where to meet, visit www.creektobay.org. High school students receive community service hours by volunteering their time during this event.

The Creek to Bay Cleanup is part of The Great American Cleanup – a national volunteer event coordinated by the non-profit organization Keep America Beautiful. The Great American Cleanup engages millions of volunteers across America for three months of community beautification service projects including activities such as tree planting, graffiti removal, park maintenance, school facelifts, invasive plant removal and beach and inland cleanups. For more information on the Great American Cleanup, visit www.KAB.org.

More than a standard aquarium, SEA LIFE provides an educational and interactive dynamic unlike any other. The SEA LIFE experience incorporates LEGO models into a child’s voyage to the depths of the oceans, presenting the wonders of the underwater world to them in a way specially designed for their understanding. Featuring play zones, fun facts and quiz trails, SEA LIFE is designed to be a child’s guide to the life of the sea. Adults and kids alike will marvel at the majesty and creativity of the unique and interactive atmosphere. SEA LIFE Aquarium at LEGOLAND California Resort is the 29th SEA LIFE Center to open in the world. As of today, SEA LIFE Centers around the world operate in twelve countries on two continents, bringing visitors nose-to-nose with a wide range of sea creatures. The Woeful Maladies of Ennui Manor and Other Mixed Repertory

In celebration of six successful years of performing throughout Southern California, Backhausdance presents an evening of company repertory at the Irvine Barclay Theatre. The evening includes a world premiere piece by esteemed choreographer, Jodie Gates, artistic director of Laguna Dance Festival, and three works choreographed by Jennifer Backhaus:The Woeful Maladies of Ennui Manor, Arrive, and Shift.

Backhausdance brings to the stage the athleticism and grace that has propelled Orange County’s premier dance company since its inception in 2003. Jennifer Backhaus, recently commissioned by Los Angeles Ballet, and her company of dancers will perform The Woeful Maladies of Ennui Manor, a stunning visual and narrative work set on a blanket of grass. Arrive was commissioned in part by the McCallum Theatre Institute. The following quote by poet laureate Maya Angelou was the inspiration for creating the piece: “Love recognizes no barriers. It jumps hurdles, leaps fences, penetrates walls to arrive at its destination full of hope.” Finally, Shift, an elegant four-part work and winner of multiple Lester Horton awards, will close the evening with a sense of uplifting hope.
