Aliso Viejo, CA, April 6, 2009 – St. Mary’s, a non-denominational Christian School, with a rich tradition of serving local families, Preschool to Grade Eight, is pleased to open its doors to create its first ever two year old classroom. With tremendous schedule flexibility of five days a week, three days a week, and two days a week either full day or half day option, and no potty training required, all students age two years zero months to two years 11 months by September 2009 are encouraged to apply. Upon acceptance, even the youngest students will be invited to join St. Mary’s Preschool this September.

New Chief of Police Services named – Robert Osborne

New Chief of Police Services named

Lt. Robert Osborne, a 24-year Orange County Sheriff’s veteran, has been named Aliso Viejo’s chief of police services.

Osborne fills the post last held by former Lt. Rich Paddock, who retired last month after serving as the city’s first chief of police services since Aliso Viejo’s July 1, 2001 incorporation. Osborne is expected to begin overseeing the department – which includes three sergeants, two investigators, 19 deputies, two community service officers and a crime prevention officer – within a week or so.

Osborne currently serves as an administrative lieutenant at the James A. Musick Facility, a 100-acre minimum security facility located in an unincorporated area of the county near Irvine and Lake Forest. In that role, he oversees facility issues, which includes staffing, facility maintenance, employee performance evaluations, team building and budget oversight, among other duties.

Osborne, who was promoted to the rank of lieutenant last September, comes to the post with a wealth of law-enforcement experience. He supervised the Sheriff’s Traffic and Auto Theft and Juvenile Services bureaus and spent three years serving as an administrative sergeant in San Clemente. While working at the Sheriff’s Aliso Viejo Substation, just a stone’s throw from City Hall on Journey, Osborne worked with local personnel, staff and the community and gained a deep appreciation of the city.

He said he looks forward to getting to know the people of Aliso Viejo.

City Council Discusses Aquatic Center – April 15th

Council to consider recreation needs to benefit community as a whole

The City Council on April 15 will consider forming an ad-hoc committee to analyze recreation needs citywide.

The subcommittee will talk to user groups to assess recreation needs in the community and satisfaction levels with the quality and quantity of existing parks, programs, facilities and services. The subcommittee would work to identify the community’s interest in the addition of future facilities and use at the city’s new Aquatic Center.

Forming a subcommittee was the brainchild of Council Member Carmen Cave, who with city staff, recently met with residents in the new Glenwood development near the Aliso Viejo Country Club.

That meeting was based on concerns stemming from wrong information provided to residents by the developer upon buying their homes that they would have free or low cost year-round access to the city’s Aquatic Center. At this time, the Aquatic Center, at 29 Santa Barbara, is scheduled to operate during peak season from Memorial Day through Labor Day – which the City Council decided last year would be the most cost-effective operation for the city. However, the city will monitor its operating budget each year and make any schedule adjustments as needed. The facility, which will offer fee-based swimming programs and much more, is slated to open to the public this Memorial Day weekend.

Council members agreed Wednesday that addressing the issue of recreation enhancements with Glenwood residents and residents throughout the entire community is essential to aiding the city’s effort to meet the parks and recreation interests of Aliso Viejo residents now and for years to come.

The council in May will consider the broader recreation assessment study in its 2009/10 fiscal year budget as part of a proactive measure to weigh the community’s voice regarding recreation and leisure needs and enhancements.

Good Medicine Bad Behavior – Prescription (Rx) (OTC) Town Hall Meeting April 14th

March 19, 2008
Teenagers Abusing Prescription (Rx) and Over©the©Counter (OTC) Drugs at an Increasing Rate
Rancho Santa Margarita, CA © Due to growing concerns about the dangers and increasing cases of teenagers
abusing prescription and over©the©counter drugs, the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence ¨C
Orange County/Community Alliance Network along with Tesoro High School PTSA are hosting a Town Hall
Meeting called Good Medicine¡Bad Behavior.
According to the 2008 Monitoring the Future Survey, seven of the top ten drugs abused by 12th graders in the past
year were prescription/over the counter drugs RX/OTC drugs. Prescription drug abuse is second to marijuana, as
reported by teens.
There has been an increase in unintentional deaths involving painkiller and psychotherapeutic drug abuse.
Studies conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show that Orange County is no exception to
this trend. From 2005 to 2007, more youth (42) between the ages of 12 to 25 died of an accidental overdose
caused by prescription or over©the©counter drugs than those who died as a result of accidental overdoses caused
by illicit drugs (38).
¡°Unfortunately, many teens are abusing these drugs to get high or for other effects. Teens say they are abusing
prescription and OTC drugs because they are easy to get. They think this is a safe way to get high, when in fact,
these drugs can be just as risky as street drugs,¡± said Phillip Falcetti, CEO of the National Council on Alcoholism
and Drug Dependence ¨C Orange County.
Participants at the Town Hall Meeting will learn about the dangers of prescription and over©the©counter drug
abuse. Parents and adults will learn about this new and emerging drug trend including warning signs of abuse,
slang terms, and prevention techniques. Youth participants will learn that Rx/OTC drugs are just as dangerous as
illicit drugs and they will have the opportunity to participate in creating an awareness prevention campaign to
reach other students. The Town Hall Meeting will include resource tables and information to take home.
WHAT: Good Medicine¡Bad Behavior
Prescription (Rx) and Over©the©Counter (OTC) Town Hall Meeting
WHEN: Tuesday, April 14, 2009 ¨C 6:30©8:00pm
WHERE: Tesoro High School
1 Tesoro Creek Road

2 FOR 1 WHALE WATCHING & LOCAL SPORTSFISHING

2 FOR 1 WHALE WATCHING & LOCAL SPORTSFISHING

WITH DANA WHARF SPORTFISHING & WHALE WATCHING

DANA POINT HARBOR, CA – April 2009 -Each winter, thousands of California Gray Whales leave the cold Artic Seas and follow the coastline to the warm, calm waters of Southern California and Baja. This 5,000-mile migration brings much of the pod past Dana Point, where pods of Giant Grays can be easily seen and photographed. Many believe Dana Point is a reference “landmark” for the whales and is famous as a gathering area; they trace one of nature’s longest migratory paths. The Gray Whales are now heading back north on their migratory path through April. Although the Gray Whales are heading back home to the Arctic, other whales are lounging along our coast which makes Whale Watching season a year round event. After the Gray Whales migrate past Dana Point, we start seeing Blue whales, Orcas and most recently a Humpback whale (photo attached). Not only can you take in the majestic wonder of the whale sightings, but the many different species of dolphins are also within our coastline. They love to ‘bow-ride’ on the tour boats showing off to their adoring fans!

Due to the unique shape of Dana Point Harbor, it is ideally located for easy and quick access to board a boat and be in the open ocean in 5 minutes. Whale watching has, in fact, become a traditional winter activity in California. Dana Point Harbor is the official “Whale Watching Capital of the West”.

Dana Wharf is extending their 2 for 1 Tuesdays to include 2 for 1 Wednesdays, so that everyone has a chance to come out and experience this magical migration. The 2 for 1 Tuesdays & 2 for 1 Wednesdays also include their local fishing trips! Dana Wharf Sportfishing and Whale Watching has been in business for over thirty years and takes pride in their Coast Guard approved, clean and state of the art tour boats. Give them a call at (949) 496-5794, or visit online at www.danawharf.com.
