March 14-15, 2009
Third Sunday of Lent
Exodus 20:1-17 First Corinthians 1:22-25 John 2:13-25

The last line in this weekend’s Gospel is like the opening line from a murder-mystery or spy-thriller: ‘But Jesus would not trust himself to them because he knew them all, and did not need anyone to testify about human nature. He himself understood it well.’ The line preceding these is important for it provides a clue as to why people were ‘believing in his name’….because they saw the signs he was doing! But don’t many of us know how fickle we humans can be…today’s fawning admiration is tomorrow’s ridicule and need for increased stimulation. How many times have we heard the expression ‘the trip of a lifetime?’ Really….a WHOLE lifetime? So…even after ten or twenty years pass we will still derive comfort and pleasure from something that happened ten or twenty years before? Of course not….the expression is a sales gimmick, once the trip is completed, in our culture it is frequently on to something new and more exciting. In our journey deeper into the desert of Lent we are asked WHY we choose to be in relationship with Jesus? Is it because someone has told us we HAVE to? Is it because we want the cracker-jack prize of heaven….so, if the only way to get heaven is by being in relationship with Jesus…well, then, we will do what we have to do. Might we be hanging around Jesus in hopes to get some of his ‘miraculous grace’, for our ourselves or for others? Again….are we with Jesus only because of what we think he can DO for us? Granted, we humans are a conflicted group, our reasons for anything are usually a stew-pot of conflicting emotions, biology, faith and belief in pagan magic. Knowing what we know about Jesus it is difficult to strip away two-thousand year’s worth of mystical beliefs….but….just for a second, consider…if Jesus looked you in the eye and said that there were never going to be any miracles in your life, no special intercessions granted….but he invited you to walk with him and be his friend….would you? While Jesus well understands our human nature….do we understand our own motivations?

Thank you for sharing this delightful late-winter weekend with our Corpus Christi family; by this time next weekend it will officially be SPRING…so enjoy these final hours of winter’s chill. This being the weekend BEFORE St. Patrick’s Day, our delightful tradition of offering FREE Irish beer after all our Masses continues….consider yourself invited to come out and enjoy a glass or two of Harp or Guinness (apple juice for the young-uns)….and no, it is not green….when it is real Irish beer you don’t have to play make-believe by dying it with food coloring!! Remember that this THURSDAY is our Corpus Christi Diners event at BJ’s Restaurant on El Toro (across form the Laguna Hills Mall)…ALL DAY. So go for lunch and/or go for dinner…but enjoy an outing and bring the flyer from today’s Bulletin so we can garner a 15% rebate! Dad’s, don’t forget the opening breakfast of POPs for dads with their kids (under 18), next Saturday at 8:00 a.m. As the seasons change remember, you are loved. FKB

Return of the Swallows, March 19-22 / Italian Heritage Celebration, March 21 & 22

Mission San Juan Capistrano Celebrates Return of the Swallows, March 19-22

Festival Includes First-Ever
Italian Heritage Celebration, March 21 & 22

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, November 19, 2008 – Mission San Juan Capistrano will present its biggest annual celebration, the Return of the Swallows, March 19-22, 2009. Highlights include the traditional observance of Swallows Day, March 19, and a first-ever Italian Celebration of the Swallows Return, highlighting the role of St. John of Capistrano as the namesake of historic Mission San Juan Capistrano and the sister-city relationship between the City of San Juan Capistrano and its Mission and Capestrano, Italy.

Traditional Observance, March 19 – The Return of the Swallows celebration kicks off on Thursday, March 19, St. Joseph’s Day on the church calendar, 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. The day features the ringing of the Mission bells at 10 a.m. and noon, performances by Mission parish school children, Renée Bondi’s singing of Leon Rene’s 1939 hit song, “When the Swallows Come Back to Capistrano,” and a reading from the new book, “The Year the Swallows Came Early” and a chance to meet its author, Kathryn Fitzmaurice (visit http://www.kathrynfitzmaurice.com/books.html). Onstage entertainment will be held 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
The Mission’s Docent Society will offer station tours and share Mission trivia with visitors and Living History characters will greet visitors. Visitors can also enjoy many displays and purchase items from a variety of vendors.
And, at 11 a.m., Mission officials will conduct a press conference for members of the media and friends of the Mission, which will feature the introduction of town dignitaries and special guests.
“Come celebrate with us as we welcome the swallows back to Capistrano,” encouraged Mechelle Lawrence-Adams, the Mission’s Executive Director. She added, “The Mission offers an affordable day of fun for the whole family.”
Italian Celebration of the Swallows Return, March 21-22 – The celebration continues March 21, 2-5 p.m. and March 22, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., as Mission San Juan Capistrano hosts its first-ever Italian Celebration of food, art and music, featuring 40 Italian-themed vendors from Capestrano, Italy, Los Angeles, Orange County and San Diego. The celebration was inspired by the sister-city relationship between the City of San Juan Capistrano, the Mission, Capestrano, Italy, and their shared namesake, the Italian friar St. John of Capistrano.
Buy a custom painted Italian bowl, eat a freshly grilled Italian sausage or sit by the koi pond and listen to lively Italian music. And, in case you missed it on March 19th, the historic Mission bells will again be run on Saturday at 2 p.m., and Sunday at noon.
Canned Food Drive – In keeping with the tradition of St. Joseph’s Day, visitors are invited to bring canned food for Serra’s Pantry, which will be distributed to the needy. Canned food will be collected throughout the four-day celebration.
The swallows migrate annually to Goya, Argentina in October, and return to their spring and summer home in Capistrano each March. The Swallows celebration began centuries ago when Mission padres observed that the birds’ return roughly coincided with St. Joseph’s Day, March 19 on the church calendar.

Water Bottle Wednesdays Recycling Fundraiser a Success

Water Bottle Wednesdays Recycling Fundraiser a Success

At Niguel Hills Middle School, there is a deceptively quiet fundraiser going on these days. Water Bottle Wednesdays is just one branch of a multi-pronged approach to raising money and saving the environment. In the month and a half during December and January, the students, faculty and community were able to raise over $1000.00 just by collecting cans and plastic bottles. This figure is the culmination of many separate efforts coming together as one.
For the last few years, English Teacher/Teaching Assistant Principal Sharon Miller has been running a “Clean Campus Committee” made up of student volunteers who dedicated their efforts mainly to helping the student body keep Niguel Hills clean. At the same time, Special Education Teacher, Amy Farrier and her class were collecting bottles and cans during lunch to earn money for field trips. There were a few other groups on campus doing the same thing in their classrooms: the Science Club, SRLA, and some individual classes were collecting small amounts to earn funds for individual needs. Then the Booster Club got involved.

Booster Club President Caroline Swift, who is a parent at Niguel, joined Miller and Farrier to unify recycling efforts across the campus. She and Miller contacted city waste management officials to arrange for clear plastic bags, plastic recycle cans, and eventually, a huge recycling container to be delivered to Niguel. The custodians and administrators help make sure the bottles and cans get to the right containers during lunch. Miller’s group organized a regular collection from the classrooms, and along with Swift, instituted Water Bottle Wednesdays, where the community brings its bottles and cans to the school each Wednesday morning. Farrier’s students took on the task of sorting and bagging the loot, getting it ready to be taken to the storage bin. Swift manages the funds collected and distributes money to those groups that help with the collection. Along with being quite a cash windfall ($1000.00 in roughly a month!!), the project has been a great opportunity for our students to help preserve the environment!

I think that’s it. Thank you for the support you give to Elite Soccer League. Without you and your families, we would not be able to continue to provide these great programs for the kids.
