LDS News – BYU 2nd Most Popular Uni/ Conference In Dubai

Study: BYU is 2nd Most Popular University
By Alicia Moulton – 5 Mar 2009

Here’s one thing Harvard and BYU have in common – of all universities in the nation, both have the highest yields of students that choose to attend out of those who are accepted.

A recent study by U.S. News and World Report named Harvard as the most popular university in the nation according to this measure (79 percent yield), with BYU coming in close second with 77 percent.

The study was based on statistics from the fall 2007 entering class and was the second year U.S. News and World Report has conducted the study. Last year, BYU tied with Harvard at the highest national yield of 79 percent.

“This yield rank really reflects the students that apply here,” said Todd Hollingshead, spokesperson and BYU media relations manager. “They want to be here.”

Hollingshead said BYU is pleased with the high ranking. President Cecil O. Samuelson also referred to it while describing BYU’s achievements in the Inquiry Conference on Friday. Four out of five students accepted to BYU choose to enroll, he said, which is “matched only by one other university in the nation.”

According to information about the study on the U.S. News Web site, a high yield “means that the school is most likely very popular with a top reputation and that the students are highly motivated to go there.”

Stake Conference in Dubai

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — What may arguably be one of the most unique stakes in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints recently completed an equally unique series of stake conference meetings as Elder Jeffrey R. Holland of the Quorum of the Twelve presided at Manama Bahrain Stake meetings conducted daily in different cities and countries over a 10-day period, including a Feb. 27 general stake conference session in Dubai and the calling of a new stake president.

It was the first official visit to the stake by an apostle in 26 years, the last time being in 1983 when Elder Boyd K. Packer first organized the stake.

Elder Holland and his wife, Patricia, and Elder Gerald Causse of the Seventy and his wife, Valerie, spent 10 days traversing the Manama Bahrain Stake, which covers several of the Arabian Gulf states and includes 16 units from the region such as those in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Qatar and Bahrain.

Combining the 636 who attended the stake conference’s final general session in Dubai with the other sessions conducted earlier in the various cities, the total attendance was 1,500 for a Mormon stake of 1,950 members.

In speaking at the Dubai general session, “You are making history,” said Elder Holland, who oversees the Middle East Area for the LDS Church. “We may not see until later what that will mean. But the Spirit of the Lord is blessing you. This conference is evidence to you that God knows and loves you.”

At every stop in their itinerary, Elders Holland and Causse conducted interviews of priesthood leaders typical to when a new stake president is called and then conducted meetings with the local members, with each meeting including the sustaining of general authorities. At the final general session in Dubai, the new stake presidency — led by President Waldo D. Galan, a Dubai resident and a Ford Motor Co. executive — was announced and sustained. The proceedings were transmitted by broadband to members in those cities Elders Holland and Causse had visited in the previous days.

April is a busy month at the MV, Saddleback Valley Elks Lodge.

Submitted by Andy Costello

The month of April is a busy month at the Mission Viejo, Saddleback Valley Elks Lodge. The new officers for the coming year take the reins of office in April, so the Lodge takes some time to reflect on the past year’s accomplishments and honor their own. Awards for hard working members are given out. An Inaugural Ball takes place welcoming the new corps of officers, and with all that happening, the work of providing for Elks Charities goes on. One notable event taking place on April 19th is the Elks fourth annual Cancer Kids Carnival held for OCF-OCF (Orange County Foundation for Oncology Children and Families). Like the Elks, they are a non-profit, volunteer run organization providing year-round recreational and social activities to foster supportive relationships for pediatric cancer patients and their families. One of the key areas of concern recognized by OCF-OCF is that when a child has cancer, it affects the entire family.

The Mission Viejo, Saddleback Valley Elks provide a Carnival Day of fun and relaxation for the entire family, complete with games, food, and loads of prizes. 150 to 200 guests are again expected to attend the event which is held in the Elks Lodge and picnic area located in Mission Viejo. The children enjoy carnival games where everyone wins a prize every time they play. There’s a bounce house, custom tee-shirts, face painting, temporary tattoos & hair coloring, balloons, cotton candy, chicken fingers, French fries, corn dogs, and snow cones.

The zany antics of the Clown Alley Clowns from Laguna Woods are always a big hit with the children. The event includes most everything you might find at a regular carnival only tailored to accommodate these very special children. The day is made extra special by the attentive Elks who see to the children’s every need and comfort. When they leave the party every child picks out a high end gift to take with them. Parents have often said that for the first time in a long while they saw smiles return to their child’s face on Elk’s Carnival Day. Elk members have said that seeing those smiles is reward enough for all their hard work and efforts.

Funding for the Carnival comes from a Cancer Charities Dinner Dance held by the Elks earlier in the year. It is also subsidized by the Elks Bingo Committee under the direction of Elk Newt Seal. Both the carnival and the dinner dance events are chaired by Elks Stephanie Bongartz and Pam Mackey with help from a dedicated crew of 35 or 40 Elk members. Once the carnival is over, the Elks donate any remaining money to the OCF-OCF’s World’s Greatest Camp. They also support their fund raisers and purchase Angel Tree gifts for their Christmas party. The Elks Bingo Committee has also provided monies, gift cards and gift baskets to individual families in need.

Information about Elks membership and Elks charities can be found on the Elks Web Site http://www,elkslodge2444.org or by calling the Elks at (949) 830-3557

Designate a Sober Driver Before the Party Begins – St. Patrick's Day

The National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence ¡VOrange County/ Community Alliance Network (NCADD-OC/CAN) Urges Motorists to Drive Responsibly this
St. Patrick¡¦s Day
Designate a Sober Driver Before the Party Begins

Irvine, CA. ¡X Lieutenant Paul D¡¦Auria, Orange County Sheriffs Department San Clemente Chief of Police is urging the public to help keep the streets safe this St. Patrick¡¦s Day by drinking responsibly and designating a sober driver before heading to the local parade or pub. Statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration show that over the past five years, 851 people lost their lives in motor vehicles crashes during the St. Patrick¡¦s Day holiday. Out of that number, 327 were killed in crashes that involved a drunk driver or motorcycle rider (operator) with a blood alcohol concentration of .08 or higher.

¡§St. Patrick¡¦s Day is supposed to be a time to celebrate Irish heritage and gather with friends, but it can quickly end in tragedy due to impaired driving,¡¨ said Phil Falcetti, CEO of NCADD-OC/CAN. ¡§If you plan on drinking, don¡¦t rely on luck to keep you safe or to keep you out of trouble. Be responsible and take appropriate precautions.¡¨

Lieutenant Paul D¡¦Auria recommends the following tips:
„X Plan a safe way home before your celebrations begin;
„X If you plan to get a ride home with someone else, designate a sober driver before any drinking begins;
„X If you¡¦re impaired, use a taxi, call a sober friend or family member, or use public transportation so you are sure to get home safely;
„X Consider using your community¡¦s Sober Rides program: AAA Tipsy Tow ¡V Call Road Side assistance at 1-800-400-4AAA for a free tow home of up to seven miles. Callers simply tell the Auto Club operators, ¡§I need a Tipsy Tow,¡¨ to receive the free tow and ride home.
„X If you happen to see a drunk driver on the road, don¡¦t hesitate to contact your local law enforcement;
„X And remember, if you know someone who is about to drive or ride their motorcycle while impaired, take their keys and help them make other arrangements to get to where they are going safely.

¡§Driving impaired or riding with someone who is impaired is extremely risky,¡¨ said Phil Falcetti, CEO. ¡§If you plan on using alcohol, plan ahead and look out for your friends too. Remember to make sure and have a safe ride.¡¨

According to NHTSA research, impaired driving remains one of America¡¦s deadliest problems. In 2007, 41,059 people nationwide were killed in motor vehicle crashes. Out of that number 12,998 people were killed in traffic crashes that involved at least one driver or motorcycle rider (operator) with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .08 or higher. Teen Center Golf Classic – March 30th

Help Us Help Our Kids!

Don’t Wait! Just Three Weeks Until the First Annual South County Teen Center Golf Classic

March 30, 2009 · Aliso Viejo Country Club

TODAY’S TEENS ARE under more pressure and are more vulnerable than ever before. In today’s tough economy many parents are forced to work more hours and many one-income households have become two-income households. At times, this may provide for periods when teens are at home alone or overly vulnerable to outside, unregulated influences.

Founded in 2006, the South County Teen Center provides a variety of supportive programs — including before- and after-school care, and summer activities — that help young teens develop strength of character, cultivate a sense of community, and build a “voice.” Help us help our teens. Join us for our first annual golf tournament. Here’s how:

Sponsor a portion of the tournament
Donate valuable auction items
Play in the tournament
Volunteer at the tournament
Join us for Dinner and Live Auction

We understand today’s economy is tough. In times like this, our services are more necessary than ever, and we truly appreciate anything you can do in support of our tournament.
