News From Unity Spiritual Life Center

Unity Spiritual Life Center

The days are beginning to lengthen, and while winter still keeps the morning air crisp, there is an atmosphere of new beginnings alive all around us. Unity Spiritual Life Center is offering a number of ways to get the New Year off to a positive start. In today’s economic climate, it is more important than ever to surround ourselves with positive people and ideas.

On January 11, Rev. Diane Harmony will present the lesson “5 Gifts for an Abundant Life” at the 10:00 AM service. Then from 1:00 until 3:00 PM she will be teaching a workshop “Give and Grow Rich.” On Thursday evening at 7:00 PM beginning January 15, Rev. Margaret Melanie will teach the 8-week Course on “5 Gifts to an Abundant Life.” These events are filled with positive ideas and spiritual principles that are timeless.

Unity is a worldwide educational movement that embraces authors like Eckhart Tolle and important works like “A New Earth,” “The Power of Now,” and “The Secret.” Unity will never tell you what to think, but rather offers helpful ideas on how to think. Unity honors all people and all paths to God. We believe that there are many names for God, but that there is only one God, and that God loves each of us equally.

Unity offers a positive approach to life, seeking to accent the good in people and all of life. God is seen as having many attributes, but most important that God is LOVE. Unity stresses that God is not a physical being in the sky, for that limits God. God’s Spirit is everywhere present, the one and only power behind, in and through all things. That power is infinite Good, and expresses through each one of us.

Unity is non-denominational and welcomes in dignity and love, people of all races, colors, religions, sexual orientations, social and economic backgrounds.

Unity emphasizes the divine potential within every child of God and teaches that through a practical understanding and application of universal spiritual truths, every person can realize and express their divine potential for a happier, fuller and more successful life.

You are warmly invited to discover this way of living on Sundays at 10:00 AM and Wednesdays at 7:30 PM.

Remembering A Christmas During The Korean War – Arnie Silverman

Harmony in Hell

At this time of the year with its overwhelming religious references, I am reminded of an event that occurred in 1952, one of the “buried” stories that the old memory seems to be churning up recently (is the old bod telling me something?). It confirmed for me, in spite of any secular leanings I personally might have, that we were and are essentially a nation of religious convictions.

We had been on the line at the Punchbowl in Korea for quite a few months. Constantly under artillery shelling day after day, month after month with sporadic attacks by Chinese and North Korean troops trying to gain new territory prior to an armistice, our unit had a significant number of casualties. Imagine the relief we felt when word came that our regiment was going to be relieved.

The day arrived, and having indoctrinated our replacements, we gathered our weapons and meager possessions and joyfully left that position. At a gathering point well behind the lines, we were placed on trucks and driven for an hour or so to what appeared to be a city of tents. As far as the eye could see, khaki colored canvas neatly lined well-policed, dirt streets.

We were assigned to a tent, and wearily spread ourselves out on the first available bunk. What luxury that was. To top it off we were issued clean clothes, directed to hot showers (my first in 2-months), and served what seemed to me then one of the finest meals I have ever had, hot (and I emphasize that word for I had not had a cooked meal for some time), breaded, fried Spam with baked beans, cornbread and real, steaming coffee. This was Heaven.

Left alone that first day with no duty assignments, I wandered through the maze of tent streets, noisily crowded with celebrating soldiers. Strangers greeted and hugged each other as if they were family. Reflected in the boisterous laughter and bantering, there was an air of joy and humor and thankfulness for just being alive and there. As I leisurely walked, I thought I heard music and songs being sung, and soon became aware that I was hearing group harmony from all directions.

Numerous, small groups of men from every unit and all denominations – white, black and mixed – with common, traditional hymnal experience had joined in gleeful harmony singing their favorite hymns. Most of them had never met before, but they seemed to have had a common religious experience and background. I heard tuneful, Christian melodies that I had not heard before. They sang as if they had been singing together for years. I actually heard a group asking each other if they knew that song or that hymn, and within 10 minutes they were blending in beautiful harmony.

Every group sang with an almost zealous fervor. The glowing eyes of each expressed sheer happiness and comfort and inner peace as they sang their old favorites. Others played guitars and banjos with surprising skill, and there was one particular private who played a harmonica as well I thought that night as Larry Adler. There were other songs being sung, but they were old country tunes that did not seem to produce the same passion (though I do remember something called “My Buckets Got a Hole in It”).

I have to confess that probably intensifying my sensitivity and emotion were several jolts of a 5th of Johnny Walker Black that I had swapped for 3 packs of Camels. Feeling pretty good, anything that anybody played would have been appreciated. That said, however, what I remember most is the intense passion of each of those singers. All seemed to express a profound and moving love and devotion to their God as they joyfully sang his praises.

That religiosity, that devotion so embedded, so important in the lives of those good men is as prevalent in a significant segment of our society today as it was then, and as it has been since the founding of the country. Religion and religious practice has always played a significant role in the lives of Americans. There was a time, however, when most of us carried our individual religious beliefs silently and personally. Those days seem gone for now.

Writer Kathryn O’Brien Also Teaches At Stoneybrooke

Stoneybrooke Christian Schools has a ‘real live’ author on our staff!! Kathryn O’Brien, a second grade teacher at the Ladera Ranch campus, has written and had two children’s books published over the last few years. After feeling the Lord’s calling to write her first book, she began the process while at home raising her children. She felt as though this was one of the ways she could fulfill her creative side. With no outside assistance, Mrs. O’Brien had to learn how to publish her first story on her own. It was a tough process and she had a few setbacks, but then the Lord began to open a few doors and through a lot of prayer and hard work she soon had her first book out, “I’d Be Your Princess”. This book is about a little girl being loved and cherished by her daddy.
Mrs. O’ Brien’s publisher soon asked her to author another book which produced her second book, “I’d Be Your Hero”, a story about the relationship between a boy and his mom. Both books have scripture throughout the story as Mrs. O’Brien teaches about godly relationships between fathers and daughters, and also mothers and sons. She has really enjoyed creating these books and hopes to start work on another book this summer. Stoneybrooke is blessed to have such a talented author and teacher on staff!!

DJAMS NEWS

DON JUAN AVILA MIDDLE SCHOOL
DJAMS NEWS
Principal: Chris Carter
December 2008
_______________________________________________________________________

Dear Parents,

I hope this message finds our DJAMS’ families in good spirits. Our students, led by our PAL class, have done a tremendous job this holiday season supporting our community and those families who are less fortunate. It is wonderful to see how giving our students are when it comes to supporting their fellow citizens. Starting in November, our school collected over 2,500 food items for the South County Outreach. In December, we teamed up with the United States Marine Corps for our Annual Toys for Tots Drive. Thank you to everyone who participated in both of these efforts. Great job PAL and Mrs. Berndt! I would like to wish everyone a restful and safe winter break and a Happy New Year. Please remember that students return to school on Monday, January 5, 2009.

TRAFFIC SITUATION

Beginning Monday, January 5, when we return from Winter Break, our south end exit side will be coned off in the mornings only. This is being done to prevent cars from making an illegal turn into the lot by going around cars waiting in line to drop off their students. Please be aware of this situation as we return to school after the holidays. Thank you.

STUDENT PHOTOS WANTED FOR YEARBOOK

Yearbook is looking for some fun photos of our DJAMS students to use in this year’s yearbook. If you have any special pictures of your child that have been taken over weekends and summertime, please submit them to our Yearbook Advisor, Mrs. Stacy Olson, by Wednesday, January 14. Thank you.

Orchestra and Band students who are trying out for the CUSD Honor groups should practice your audition sheets over the break! Auditions are held in mid-January.

BRONCO PRIDE AWARDS

Don Juan Avila is pleased to announce it will be distributing “Bronco Pride” awards to outstanding students at DJAMS. The awards will recognize both academic accomplishments as well as school and community service efforts. This is an excellent opportunity for your sons and daughters’ achievements to be recognized. We would hope that all parents encourage their sons/daughters to get involved in the “Bronco Pride” awards. Please read through the packet explaining the process and deadline. Details and forms are available in the School Information folder. The awards will be distributed during the 4th quarter. If you have any questions or comments about the awards, please contact Mrs. Burdette, the Assistant Principal at Don Juan Avila Middle School or Mrs.Balogh. Winter Break would be a great time to build points towards Bronco Pride.

AMERICAN MATH COMPETION RESULTS

Don Juan Avila Middle School participates in an annual math worldwide competition every fall. We invite our top students to practice and take a test of 25 challenging word and critical thinking problems. After hard work, time and making the commitment to practice for the contest, our preliminary results gave Don Juan Avila the great honor of being in the top 5% in the world of schools participating in the American Math Competition this past November. Congratulations to all the students who helped our school score so high. Individual results of students will be released early next year.

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, Calif., December 18, 2008 – Mission San Juan Capistrano will extend its appreciation to California classroom educators for their dedication to their students throughout 2009. Beginning Saturday, January 10, 2009, and continuing on 2nd Saturdays through December 12, 2009, teachers with valid ID can enjoy free admission with each paid admission. Teacher Appreciation Days offer elementary and secondary teachers both an enjoyable experience, and provides them with useful information for their classrooms.
“Teacher Appreciation Days are a gift we offer teachers to thank them for their service,” remarked Mechelle Lawrence-Adams, the Mission’s Executive Director. “We also want to introduce them to or remind them of all the Mission has to offer, in hopes that they’ll return with their students.”
Audio Tour – Teachers can experience the new, self-guided digital “Voices of the Mission” audio tour, available in English, Spanish, French and German. A hand-held audio player is given to each visitor, and offers a 45-minute tour with history, interviews, music, and sound effects interpreting Mission San Juan Capistrano. The audio tour may also be downloaded for free at www.missionsjc.com.
The Mission also offers Saved by the Mission Bell: A Child’s Journey through California History, an audio tour designed for students. It features the story of Mission bell ringer Acu, a misplaced man in California’s history, who seeks the help of two modern-day 4th graders, Megan and Tommy, to return to his time in 1915. Along the way, the trio meets characters from the Mission’s past who open the children’s eyes to the change and challenges of the Mission.
Living History Days – Second Saturdays are also Living History Days at the Mission. Visitors have the opportunity to meet people from the Mission’s history portrayed by members of the Living History Society. Each member carefully studies the background of his/her character and creates an authentic costume.
Additionally, visitors may receive a free trading card featuring a Living History character. Characters featured on the cards include Fr. Junipero Serra, Don Juan Bandini, Jessie Benton Fremont, Christopher “Kit” Carson and many more.
“It’s our goal to provide our young people with an authentic place for inspired learning about California history,” continued Lawrence-Adams. “We hope that a visit to the Mission will help teachers see all of the ways in which Orange County’s only mission provides an inspired learning experience.”
Proof of being a current California teacher required; additional members of the teacher’s party must pay the regular admission rate. For additional information about the Mission, visit www.missionsjc.com or call (949) 234-1300.

Warren To Give Invocation – Lake Forest Saddleback Church

Obama defends choice of inauguration pastor

CHICAGO (AFP) — Barack Obama on Thursday defended his choice of a conservative evangelical pastor to deliver a religious invocation at his January 20 presidential inauguration.

Pastor Rick Warren is a popular preacher who attracts some 20,000 people to his weekly sermons at his giant Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, California.

The author of the best seller “The Purpose Driven Life,” a wildly successful religious advice book, Warren is also known for his strong views against gay marriage and abortion.

“It is no secret that I am a fierce advocate for equality for gay and lesbian Americans,” Obama said at a press conference in Chicago.

But he argued: “It’s important for America to come together, even though we may have disagreements on certain social issues.”

Obama noted that Warren invited him to speak at Saddleback a few years ago “despite his awareness that I held views that were entirely contrary to his” on gay rights and abortion.

Obama said pastor Joseph Lowery, a civil rights icon “who has deeply contrasting views to Rick Warren on a whole host of issues,” will also speak at the inauguration.

“There will be a wide range of viewpoints that are presented. And that’s how it should be, because that’s what America’s about … we are diverse and noisy and opinionated.”

He added: “That’s hopefully going to be a spirit that carries over into my administration.”

Two leading liberal groups expressed shock over Obama’s choice of Warren, who is on record as saying that gay marriage “is morally equivalent to allowing brothers and sisters to marry,” and describing abortion as a “holocaust.”

Warren also supported California’s controversial Proposition 8, which voters approved in November. The measure changes the state constitution to define marriage as a union between a man and a woman, therefore banning gay marriage.

In a letter to Obama, the gay rights organization Human Rights Campaign bitterly complained about the choice.

“By inviting Rick Warren to your inauguration, you have tarnished the view that gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) Americans have a place at your table,” read a statement signed by group president Joe Solmonese.

The approval of Proposition 8 in California, “which stripped loving, committed same-sex couples of their given legal right to marry is the greatest loss our community has faced in 40 years,” Solmonese wrote.

He described Warren’s invitation as “a genuine blow to LGBT Americans.”

The liberal advocacy group People for the American Way expressed its “grave disappointment” over the invitation.

Warren “gets plenty of attention through his books and media appearances. He doesn’t need or deserve this position of honor,” group president Kathryn Kolbert said in a statement.

During the presidential campaign Obama set out to convince religious voters — especially evangelicals and Catholics that often choose Republican candidates — to cast ballots for him.

In mid-August Warren hosted an event at Saddleback in which Obama and his then-Republican presidential rival John McCain spoke about religion.

Warren quizzed each candidate separately for an hour on issues that included their views on same-sex marriage, abortion, their personal views of faith, sin, and their definition of evil.
