 BEAUTIFUL: THE CAROLE KING MUSICAL

0

LA MIRADA THEATRE FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS & McCOY RIGBY ENTERTAINMENT announce the second show of its 2023-2024 “Soundtrack of Your Life” season, the Southern California regional theatre premiere of the Tony Award-winning, BEAUTIFUL: THE CAROLE KING MUSICAL.

Book by Douglas McGrath; words & music by Gerry Goffin & Carole King, Barry Mann & Cynthia Weil; music by arrangement with Sony/ATV Music Publishing; orchestrations, vocal, and music arrangements by Steve Sidwell; musical direction by Ryan O’Connell; choreography & associate direction by Joyce Chittick; and direction by David Ruttura (based on the original Broadway direction by Marc Bruni and original Broadway choreography by Josh Prince).

BEAUTIFUL: THE CAROLE KING MUSICAL will preview on Friday, November 10 at 8 pm & Saturday, November 11 at 2 pm (with a press opening on Saturday, November 11 at 8 pm) and will run through Sunday, December 3, 2023 at La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts, 14900 La Mirada Blvd in La Mirada.

Follow the inspiring true story of Carole King’s remarkable rise to stardom – from being part of a hit songwriting team with her husband Gerry Goffin to becoming one of the most successful solo acts in popular music history.  Along the way, she wrote the soundtrack to a generation, with countless classics like “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman,” “Take Good Care of My Baby,” “You’ve Got a Friend,” “So Far Away,” “It Might as Well Rain Until September,” “Up on the Roof,” and “The Loco-motion.”  Don’t miss this smash Broadway hit that ran for 6 years!

CAROLE KING (Words and Music) Pop music would be very different without the contributions of Carole King, who at age 17 wrote her first #1 hit with Gerry Goffin, “Will You Love Me Tomorrow” for The Shirelles.  The dozens of chart hits Goffin and King wrote during this period became legendary, but it was 1971’s Tapestry which took King to the pinnacle, speaking personally to her contemporaries and providing a spiritual musical backdrop to the decade.  More than 400 of her compositions have been recorded by over 1,000 artists, resulting in 100 hit singles and six Grammys.

BARRY MANN (Words and Music) has written the melodies of some of the most influential pop songs in musical history.  In addition to “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling,” the most-played song of the last century, and the songs heard in Beautiful, he composed later standards like “Somewhere Out There” (winner of two Grammys), “Here You Come Again,” “Sometimes When We Touch,” “Just Once,” and “Don’t Know Much.”  Together he and Cynthia Weil have amassed an incredible 112 pop, country, and R&B awards from Broadcast Music Inc. for significant radio air play.  He has been inducted into both the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

CYNTHIA WEIL (Words and Music) was the acclaimed lyricist of classic songs such as “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling,” the most-played song of the 20th century.  In addition to the songs heard in Beautiful, she set the words to later standards including “Somewhere Out There,” “Here You Come Again,” “He’s So Shy,” “Just Once,” and “Don’t Know Much,” to name just a few.  Weil was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, honored with multiple Grammy nominations, and two Grammy awards for “Somewhere Out There” as the Motion Picture Song of the Year and Song of the Year.  Weil passed away on June 1, 2023.

The Design Team for BEAUTIFUL: THE CAROLE KING MUSICAL is as follows: Set, Props and Costumes provided by Ogunquit Playhouse (Scenic Design by Derek McLane & Costume Design by Alejo Vietti); Lighting Design by Ethan Steimel; Sound Design by Josh Bessom; Costume Coordinator, Adam Ramirez; Hair/Wig/Make-up Design by Kaitlin Yagen; Properties Supervisor Kevin Williams.  The Casting Director is Julia Flores.  The Production Stage Manager is Monica Dickhens.

Casting for BEAUTIFUL: THE CAROLE KING MUSICAL will be announced shortly.

ON YOUR FEET! LA MIRADA THEATRE

LA MIRADA THEATRE FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS & McCOY RIGBY ENTERTAINMENT announce full casting for the Southern California regional premiere of a brand-new production of the smash-hit musical, ON YOUR FEET! THE STORY OF EMILIO & GLORIA ESTEFAN, with music, lyrics & orchestrations by Emilio and Gloria Estefan, musical direction by Daniel Alejandro Gutierrez, and direction & choreography by Luis Salgado.

ON YOUR FEET! THE STORY OF EMILIO & GLORIA ESTEFAN will run through Sunday, October 29, 2023 at La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts, 14900 La Mirada Blvd in La Mirada.

This inspiring true story about heart, heritage, and two people who believed in their talent -and each other – has already won the hearts of audiences and critics alike.  ON YOUR FEET! THE STORY OF EMILIO & GLORIA ESTEFAN is the exhilarating original musical based on the extraordinary life of 26-time Grammy Award-winning husband-and-wife team Gloria and Emilio Estefan, featuring a book by Academy Award and Golden Globe winner Alexander Dinelaris and a score made up of some of the most loved and iconic songs of the past quarter-century including “Rhythm is Gonna Get You,” “Conga,” “Get On Your Feet,” “Don’t Want To Lose You Now,” “1-2-3,” and “Coming Out of the Dark.”

“We are absolutely thrilled that our musical will once again be shared with audiences across the United States in this brand-new production of ON YOUR FEET! THE STORY OF EMILIO & GLORIA ESTEFAN led by Luis Salgado,” Gloria and Emilio Estefan said about today’s announcement. “We’ve had tremendous fun sharing our story on the stage since our show first hit Broadway in 2015, and it is our hope that we can continue to inspire and uplift people with its celebratory message, especially at a time when we all need it so much.”

Salgado said, “This story exemplifies the American Dream through the eyes and work ethic of Cuban immigrants. The Estefans have given us permission to dare to dream bigger.  They allowed their truth to resonate through their music, penetrating all of us, whether you’re Latine or not. This joy is a gift we want to give to our audiences.  We are passionate about opening the door of representation on this tour and nurturing a diverse family both backstage and on stage, with creative team members who are joining us from around the world,” he added.  Several creative team members from the Washington D.C. production will join the national tour.

GLORIA ESTEFAN (Music, Lyrics & Orchestrations) With seven Grammy Awards and more than 100 million albums sold worldwide, Gloria Estefan is the most successful Latin crossover performer in the history of pop music.  In addition to her 38 #1 hits across the Billboard charts, Gloria recorded the Oscar-nominated song “Music of My Heart,” and has received numerous honors and awards over the course of her illustrious career.  She has been presented with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, inducted into the Latin Songwriters Hall of Fame, named BMI Songwriter of the Year, received an American Music Award for Lifetime Achievement, and won an MTV Video Music Award, two ACE Awards and multiple Billboard Awards for her many chart-topping hits.  Gloria has also been honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, The Kennedy Center Honors, the Ellis Island Congressional Medal of Honor, and the Hispanic Heritage Award.

EMILIO ESTEFAN (Music, Lyrics & Orchestrations) is a world-renowned music, television and film producer, who has been instrumental in shaping, developing, and directing the careers of his superstar wife, Gloria, as well as Shakira, Ricky Martin, Jennifer Lopez, Marc Anthony, and Jon Secada, among many others.  With a resume which includes 19 Grammy Awards, Emilio is one of the most successful producers in the music business, blending Latin, pop, and world rhythms, creating his own unique style and world-wide hits.  It is this vision that transcends the music field and spills over into film, television, hotels, and restaurants, among other business endeavors, including becoming the first Cuban-born minority stakeholder in an NFL franchise, the Miami Dolphins. Emilio and Gloria were the 2015 recipients of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the first time the honor has been bestowed on a married couple.

This breathtaking and highly anticipated performance will take Segerstrom Hall stage on Saturday, November 4, 2023 at 7:30 PM, and Sunday, November 5, 2023 at 2 PM. With her personal touches on every aspect of this performance, Peck has assembled some of today’s most exciting dance artists for a virtuosic and innovative program.

After a sold-out world premiere in New York City and a European debut in London, award-winning American ballerina Tiler Peck, will bring her critically acclaimed show, Turn It Out with Tiler Peck and Friends, to her home state of California this fall.

As dancer, choreographer, and making her directorial debut, New York City Ballet’s award-winning principal dancer has gone above and beyond to craft an exquisite evening of exceptional performances, with pieces that blend styles and invite imaginative musical collaboration. Described by The New York Times as “the ballerina who can stop time (and restart it, too),” Peck’s integration of disciplines is part of what makes this innovative program so entertaining and accessible.

Though Peck’s storied career was already studded with pinnacle moments, Tiler’s audience has expanded exponentially over the past few years due to her viral “Turn It Out with Tiler” classes. The class, which Peck started on her Instagram to provide community during the pandemic, reached up to 15,000 daily participants on Instagram Live and served in part as an inspiration for the Turn It Out with Tiler Peck and Friends tour. The opportunity to collaborate with fellow top-tier artists, celebrate the joy of live performance and continue to showcase the wide tapestry of art through dance has informed the electric production.

The show opens with Thousandth Orange, choreographed by Peck, set to music by Pulitzer-prize winner Caroline Shaw, and is followed by Alonzo King’s Swift Arrow with music by Jason Moran; Time Spell, choreographed by tap dancer Michelle Dorrance, Jillian Meyers, and Tiler Peck with music by Aaron Marcellus and Penelope Wendtlandt, and closes with William Forsythe’s The Barre Project, Blake Works II with music by James Blake.

The cast of dancers also includes India Bradley, Chun Wai Chan, Michelle Dorrance, Jovani Furlan, Christopher Grant, Lex Ishimoto, Brooklyn Mack, Roman Mejia, Jillian Meyers, Mira Nadon, Quinn Starner, and Byron Tittle.

Turn It Out with Tiler Peck and Friends California tour includes UCSB Arts & Lectures at the Granada Theatre in Santa Barbara on Wednesday, October 25th at 8:00pm; The Soraya in Los Angeles on Saturday, October 28th at 8:00pm and Sunday, October 29th at 3:00pm; San Diego Civic Theatre on Wednesday, November 1st at 7:30pm; and Segerstrom Hall at Segerstrom Center for the Arts on Saturday, November 4th at 7:30pm and Sunday, November 5th at 2:00pm.

Lyndsey Winship in The Guardian said of this program, “Tiler Peck is a stupendous mover. In her London debut, the New York City Ballet principal shows off the effervescent speed and musicality she’s known for, along with an eagerness for collaboration built around the joy of music, rhythm, athleticism and pure dance.  There’s a great sense of artistic exchange and shared pleasure that’s a delight to be part of.”

Siobhan Murphy said in The Stage, “There’s something utterly exhilarating about watching Tiler Peck in full flight. Many know her as the ballerina the world tuned into for her live-streamed ballet classes during lockdown. Live on stage, rather than in her mum’s kitchen, the award-winning New York City Ballet principal is commanding, her laser-like precision matched with an extraordinary sense of corporeal power. And for this collection of four works, which she has curated, she surrounds herself with dancers who share that power.”

Tiler Peck shared, “This program is a love letter to my craft as a dancer and the manifestation of my total freedom as an artist. I grew up doing all styles of dance and am grateful that I get to incorporate all of them alongside best-in-class multidisciplinary dancers in a show that will undeniably be more than what people are used to seeing at the ballet with tutus and tiaras!”

MV News and Updates on Facilities

The City Council on Tuesday, September 26 will recognize some outstanding athletes who won the 2023 USA Diving Junior Nationals at the Marguerite Aquatics Center as well as consider agreements with the Nadadores and a youth-oriented musical theatre program, among other business.

The business portion of the meeting starts at 6 pm in the City Hall Council Chamber at 200 Civic Center.

The Council will recognize the Mission Viejo Nadadores who won the Team Championship this summer at the 2023 USA Diving Junior Nationals at the Marguerite Aquatics Center. Divers from across the country, who stayed in local hotels and patronized Mission Viejo establishments, competed in this prestigious event, and the Council will present Certificates of Commendation to the Mission Viejo teammates who earned the distinction.

The Council will consider an amendment to the longtime Facilities Use Agreement between the City and Mission Viejo Nadadores Foundation for use of the Marguerite Aquatics Center. Compared to other aquatics agencies in the area, Mission Viejo’s facility serves the most users and at a fraction of the cost. This proposed amendment was drafted to redistribute and clarify the responsibilities of both parties to better align to the strengths of each.

As plans are being developed and reviewed for the future of the MART building at 25280 Marguerite over the next 15 months, the Council will consider awarding an agreement to the theater group Bravo Players Guild for the temporary use of a portion of the building. Bravo Players Guild is a youth-oriented musical theatre program for children aged 7-17.

To help bring awareness to the importance of children’s emotional well-being and mitigate mental health challenges later in life. The Council will issue a proclamation recognizing September as Children’s Emotional Wellness Month.

Council meetings are streamed live on the City’s website and air on Cox Channel 30 and AT&T U-Verse Channel 99. Residents are encouraged to sign up for the City’s eNewsletter and follow the City’s official social media sites for the most accurate, up-to-date information.

Destroy sensitive documents for free Oct. 7

Mission Viejo residents and businesses can destroy their sensitive documents during the free drive-through Document Shredding event on Saturday, October 7.

Hosted by Waste Management and the City of Mission Viejo, the event is from 9 to 11 am (or until truck capacity is reached) in the City Hall parking lot at 200 Civic Center.

Identity theft is one of the fastest-growing crimes in the nation, and shredding documents with personal or financial information can be an effective measure of prevention.

Residents and businesses can bring up to five banker-size file boxes (24” x 12″ x 10”) worth of paper records for immediate shredding. Proof of residency is required. Documents and boxes should be free of binders, paper clips, plastic sleeves and metal butterfly clips.

Items not accepted include CDs, credit cards, three-ring binders, wire dividers, newspapers, magazines and spiral notebooks. For safety reasons, remain in your vehicle until you are serviced. No walk-ups will be allowed.
