Milpa Music Festival

The Ecology Center Presents the 2nd Annual Milpa Music Festival July 29-30, 2023

Live music, farm-fresh food, craft beverages, and artistic workshops celebrate the ancient practice of intercropping corn, beans, and squash

The Ecology Center, San Juan Capistrano’s 28-acre Regenerative Organic Certified™farm and education center, is hosting its second annual Milpa Music Festival from 3–9 p.m. on Saturday, July 29 and 2–8 p.m. on Sunday, July 30, 2023. The family-friendly event will pay homage to the legacy of the land on which the farm is located while highlighting the unique flavors, colors, textures and scents of “milpa” crops: corn, beans and squash. These crops, grown together on the farm encompass a practice perfected by Indigenous farmers and land stewards over thousands of years, and advances The Ecology Center’s ethos to care for the planet through not just organic, but regenerative organic agriculture by utilizing farming practices that give more than they take from the land by focusing on soil health, animal welfare and social fairness.

RONNIE MARMO IN “I’M NOT A COMEDIAN… I’M LENNY BRUCE”

Groundbreaking Theatrical Experience to Run Limited Engagement August 17-19

at the Laguna Playhouse!

Critically-acclaimed actor Ronnie Marmo, with the blessings of Kitty Bruce (daughter of the late Lenny Bruce), along with the Lenny Bruce Foundation, are thrilled to present “I’M NOT A COMEDIAN… I’M LENNY BRUCE” – Directed by Joe Mantegna, the theatrical event starring Ronnie Marmo as Lenny Bruce makes its premiere at the Laguna Playhouse for a limited engagement run August 17 – 19 only!  Tickets are on sale now at LennyBruceOnStage.com and at lagunaplayhouse.com.

“I believe Lenny’s is the voice this country needs right now,” says playwright and star Ronnie Marmo. “In the 1960s, he exposed many of the ‘untouchable’ subjects that are in the news again now: religion, racism, immigration, xenophobia, gender inequality, sexual identity, the criminal justice system, capital punishment, bail reform, government aid, police brutality, corrupt capitalism, the opiate epidemic, marijuana legalization, censorship, I could go on and on. So here we are, over 56 years later, all the issues Lenny was fighting for are still so relevant and even radical. In certain ways, we’ve progressed since Lenny was with us, and in many, we have regressed.”

I’M NOT A COMEDIAN… I’M LENNY BRUCE chronicles the life and death of the most controversial comedian and undisputed legend of all time…Lenny Bruce. His personal pain, sharply funny social commentary and completely original, freestyle comedy left a lasting impact on today’s poetry, politics, music, film – and of course – comedy. His unwavering commitment to, and passion for, free speech led to numerous obscenity charges and arrests. Bruce fought for freedom of speech all the way to the Supreme Court, and died of an accidental overdose in 1966 while out on appeal. Lauded by fans and former friends of Bruce, Marmo’s crowd-shocking portrayal brings the notorious funnyman to life with all the electrifying, insightful and comedic brilliance as the one and only Lenny Bruce himself.

“This perfectly inflected performance is expertly directed by actor Mantegna.”- Los Angeles Times (Critics Choice)

“We are actually watching Bruce resurrected. “- Theater Mania

“…even the most devoted Bruce fan will leave impressed with Marmo.” – Chicago Tribune

WHAT THE CELEBRITIES ARE SAYING:

“The best portrayal of my father I have ever seen”. – Kitty Bruce (Daughter of Lenny)

“Funny, fierce, tragic…beautifully directed by Joe Mantegna with a strong performance by Ronnie Marmo vividly brings to life the comedian we so miss today.” – Billy Crystal

“A terrific show about a true genius who was ahead of his time.  Go see I’m Not A Comedian…I’m Lenny Bruce.”  – Tony Bennett

“Actor Ronnie Marmo, is a force of volcanic proportions. I was riveted by Ronnie… It had such an impact on me.” – Patti LuPone

“Ronnie Marmo delights as he channels Lenny Bruce. A thoughtful authenticity in performance, direction and script.” – Bonnie Hunt, Actor

“The performance is — to my eye — flawless, by a Brooklynite named Ronnie Marmo.” –  Teller, Performer (Penn and Teller)

“’I’m Not A Comedian… I’m Lenny Bruce’ is superlative in all departments…it’s the tour de force by actor Ronnie Marmo that for me is historic. Lenny’s life pours out of him.” – Richard Lewis, Comedian

I’M NOT A COMEDIAN… I’M LENNY BRUCE makes its Laguna Beach theatrical premiere at the Laguna Playhouse on August 17 – 19. The Laguna Playhouse is located at 606 Laguna Canyon Road in Laguna Beach.

SYMPHONY IN THE CITIES 2023

CITY OF HOPE ORANGE COUNTY, CORPORATE SPONSOR OF SYMPHONY IN THE CITIES 2023, JOINS PACIFIC SYMPHONY
IN PRESENTING GREAT MUSIC IN THE GREAT OUTDOORS

Free Outdoor Summer Concerts in Irvine, Mission Viejo, and Orange

Each summer, a grateful Pacific Symphony says thank you to its community by throwing a big (free!) musical party with some of its Orange County neighbors. For this year’s “Symphony in the Cities,” made possible by Corporate Sponsor City of Hope Orange County, the orchestra makes appearances in the cities of Irvine, Mission Viejo, and Orange, where Music Director Carl St.Clair has designed an evening of people-pleasing favorites: a delightful mix of classical and popular music and patriotic tunes. From classical masterpieces by Johann Strauss, Jr. and Sr. and Bizet’s Carmen Fantasy and rousing tunes by John Philip Sousa to songs from John Williams, plus, activities for children and families—it’s a perfect way to spend a balmy summer evening. Families are encouraged to bring picnics, blankets, and chairs and arrive early for the Symphony’s Musical Playground and city festivities, prior to kicking back for a little music under the magnificent O.C. sky. For more information, call (714) 755-5799 or visit www.PacificSymphony.org/SITC.

“I think I can safely speak for all of us at Pacific Symphony when I say that there is no time of year we enjoy more than summer!” says Maestro St.Clair. “Living in beautiful Orange County, we are so fortunate to have the opportunity to head outdoors for our ‘Symphony in the Cities’ concert series and spend time with people we might not otherwise have the chance to meet. We’re grateful to this year’s wonderful host cities of Mission Viejo and Irvine and to the Musco Center for the Arts at Chapman University, as well as all the fantastic individuals who work so hard to make these concerts an enjoyable experience for all.”

This summer’s “Symphony in the Cities” concerts take place on: Sat., Jul. 29 in Irvine at the Mike Ward Community Park Woodbridge; Sat., Aug. 5 in Mission Viejo on “The Village Green” at Oso Viejo Community Park; and Sun., Aug. 6, at the Aitken Arts Plaza at Musco Center for the Arts at Chapman University.

In addition to the concerts, which all start at 7 p.m., the City of Mission Viejo hosts its “Prelude in the Park” at 4 p.m. Other pre-concert entertainment, including the Symphony’s Musical Playground—featuring hands-on activities including a drum circle and creating a musical craft—begins at 4 p.m. in Mission Viejo and 5:30 p.m. in Irvine and at the Musco Center for the Arts at Chapman University. Plus, children and their parents won’t want to miss the always-popular conducting clinic led by the Maestro himself. All children who participate in the clinic are invited to join St.Clair in front of the stage during the concert to help him conduct Sousa’s Hands Across the Sea.

“One of my greatest passions is sharing my love of music with others, so every summer I am excited to bring Pacific Symphony out into the community, where it can touch the hearts of more people than ever,” says Maestro St.Clair. “This year’s program truly has something for everyone. And I most especially look forward to the children who help me conduct during the concert!”

“Pacific Symphony is thankful to the cities of Mission Viejo and Irvine, as well as the Musco Center for the Arts at Chapman University, who have provided extra support and ensured that Symphony in the Cities remains a part of their communities this year,” says Pacific Symphony President John Forsyte. “Because of them, we are able to offer high-quality music in outdoor settings to people who might not otherwise have the opportunity to hear this great music and orchestra.”

MV Hometown Hero Award

Council recognizes Mission Viejo’s Michael Block with Hometown Hero Award

The City Council on Tuesday recognized resident Michael Block with the City’s Hometown Hero Award and passed items designed to benefit this community.

Established in 1996, the Hometown Hero Award identifies and recognizes folks whose noble qualities and personal achievements make them heroes worthy of our admiration. Michael Block has certainly garnered the admiration of many throughout the nation when he made history at the May 2023 PGA Championship with a hole-in-one during the final round. Michael, who is a PGA club pro and instructor at Arroyo Trabuco Golf Club, became the first PGA club pro to make a hole-in-one at the PGA Championship since George Bowman in 1996. He went on to finish the tournament in a tie for 15th place at 1-over par. Michael has made the cut five times while competing in 25 PGA events dating back 16 years.  Along with the City award, Michael received a congressional recognition from Congresswoman Young Kim and an American flag that has flown over the United States Capitol.

In addition to the Hometown Hero Award, Council Members honored the volunteers who are the lifeblood of the Mission Viejo Animal Services Center. These amazing volunteers are essential to the center’s operations, and the City appreciates their vast contributions.

In other news, the Council unanimously passed the Objective Design Standards Phase 1, which will provide a set of clear, objective, and measurable design standards to potential developers of multi-family residential and mixed-use projects to ensure that structures feature high-quality designs that maintain the architectural character of the City.

The Council also passed items regarding feasibility studies to research private and public financing sources for possible construction of a parking structure to serve the Marguerite Recreation Center, Oso Creek Golf Course, Oso Creek Trailhead as well as a performing arts theater.

Council meetings are traditionally dark for a portion of every summer, so the next meeting takes place on Tuesday, August 22. Meetings are streamed live on the City’s website and air on Cox Channel 30 and AT&T U-Verse Channel 99. Residents are encouraged to sign up for the City’s eNewsletter and follow the City’s official social media sites for the most accurate, up-to-date information.

What could be better than coming together to heal a community?

This question echoed throughout the recent annual meeting of my denomination, the Church of Christ, Scientist (Christian Science). Though members from around the world gathered in Boston, the meeting’s theme, “The discovery today – where hearts catch fire,” resonated with me as I considered, with renewed freshness, the role of my local house of worship within the community.

There’s something transformative about joining with others in worship, not for personal gain, but in the spirit of humble service with a sincere desire to bless. It’s here worship comes alive and serves its spiritual purpose. I’ve witnessed how our faith communities help us feel the touch of the Divine that lifts off mental darkness through the flame of spiritual inspiration rooted in love for God and love for one another. This highest ideal of praise by expressing unselfed love helps us rise above the temptation to either deify or demonize another. Instead, we have the opportunity to see a little more of the value and goodness in everyone as children of God, and at the same time, celebrate God’s care and blessings for all.

The founder of the Christian Science church, Mary Baker Eddy, certainly encouraged this active expression of worship. “I make strong demands on love,” she wrote, “call for active witnesses to prove it, and noble sacrifices and grand achievements as its results.” A friend of mine shared during the church meeting, “Love takes our thought away from ourselves – narrow, limited thinking – and out into the world, to ‘the sustaining infinite’ where ‘today is big with blessings.’” This leads to profound changes in our lives and view of the world.

Like Daniel in the well-loved Bible story, we too can experience that practical prayer — so much more than mere wishful thinking —, which helps us see that even in the midst of the frightening lions of the world, the God of all the earth protects and delivers us. Here is the promise that instills within us more of this flame of inspiration and hope. It’s this power of coming together in worship of an all-loving Supreme Being that can dissolve fear and hate and remind us we aren’t alone.

No, it’s not always easy. And too many times we may find ourselves disappointed in our own actions or those of others. But doesn’t the Bible unveil the restorative promise of God’s love for humanity? Even when we falter, or perhaps especially so, the living presence of God, found in moments of quiet communion or songs of praise, is the spark that helps us recognize the comforting, redeeming presence of divine grace in our lives.

I was deeply touched by the example in the meeting of a young man who found this redeeming power at a time when he most needed it – in jail. While incarcerated, he enjoyed the visits with the Christian Science chaplain volunteers and what he learned about God as a result. After his release, he found purpose and fellowship in his community’s local Christian Science church. Not only did the church’s members embrace this individual, but he embraced them with a singular devotion to nurture their congregation and surrounding community. As he expressed it, “I felt so compelled to come into this church, and I met a God who is present in my life right now.”

That’s what church is all about! In fact, this young man said it himself, “What could be better than coming to church and trying to heal a community?”

Indeed, what could be better?
