OC PARKS REOPENS INTERPRETIVE CENTER

Fun for all ages at the Interpretive Center at Clark Regional Park.

After temporary closure in April 2022, the Interpretive Center at Ralph B. Clark Regional Park in Buena Park has once again reopened to the public.

The Interpretive Center has offered visitors of all ages the chance to enjoy local history since its original opening in 1988. Since then, the center has displayed an array of fossils recovered within Clark Regional Park, northern Orange County’s Coyote Hills and other surrounding areas, as well as an exhibit about the archaeology and cultural traditions of the people who have called Orange County home for more than 10,000 years.

The Interpretive Center also contains a fishbowl lab where visitors can view how fossils and artifacts are prepared for research and display.

Over the past year, the facility underwent extensive renovations including roof repair, beam replacement and new window installation to preserve and improve the center for future generations.

“Clark Regional Park’s Interpretive Center is loved by both children and adults and provides visitors with an educational view of prehistoric Orange County,” said Supervisor Doug Chaffee, Orange County Board of Supervisors. “With the completed renovations and upcoming additions, the center will welcome future generations to enjoy fossils and artifacts found right here in Orange County.”

The California Natural Resources Agency has recently awarded Clark Regional Park’s Interpretive Center with the California Museums Grant. This three-year grant-funded project will be used to upgrade exhibits that have been in place for more than 15 years and improve the overall guest experience by providing new content for all learners. Additions will include expanding exhibits of the County’s archaeology collection developed in collaboration with local Native American tribes to highlight the intricate link between Indigenous communities and the land.

The Interpretive Center is open Wednesdays from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. and Thursday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. School and group tours are available with advance reservation. Please call 714-973-3170 for more information.

Located within the 105-acre Ralph B. Clark Regional Park, the interpretive center tells the prehistoric tale of the area with its extensive fossil collection. Much of the collection dates from over 1 million years ago with some fossils as “young” as 10,000 years old. Most of the collection was acquired during excavations for sand and gravel from the area for construction of the Santa Ana and Riverside Freeways from 1956-1973.

Local Actress Spreads Anti-Drug Message

Young actress’ anti-drugs speech is being used as a lesson for middle school students

Kayden Brenna Tokarski, a 14-time award-winning actress who plays a young Julia Roberts’ character in the Critics’ Choice-nominated series “Gaslit,” is serving as a lesson for middle school students.

Kayden served as keynote speaker for the 34th annual Walk Against Drugs in Orange County in 2021 – spreading the message to tweens and teens to say NO to drugs, alcohol, tobacco, and vaping – and was also a “celebrity” speaker for the 2021 Red Cross LA fundraiser that also featured Mario Lopez. This month, Kayden’s speech from the Walk Against Drugs is being used as a lesson for 7th graders at a South Orange County, California school.

“I am incredibly honored and grateful that my speech is being used as a lesson in middle school,” Kayden said. “Especially with all the issues facing teens today, it’s so important to reiterate that using drugs, alcohol, tobacco or vaping are not choices any teen should make.”

In addition to giving back (Kayden was also part of the Joyful Child Foundation’s “Be Brave, Be Safe” pilot aimed at empowering kids against predators), the 13-year-old actress plays a mean girl in the upcoming sci-fi movie “Roswell Delirium” starring Anthony Michael Hall. The film, which premieres this summer, is written and directed by Richard Bakewell and also stars 1980s icons Dee Wallace, known for her motherly roles in 1980s hits like E.T. and Cujo; The Facts of Life’s Lisa Whelchel; Die Hard’s Reggie VelJohnson; and Flash Gordan’s Sam Jones.

Most recently, Kayden filmed a TV movie in April in Kentucky and was cast in the 2024 thriller “Redland.”

SEGERSTROM CENTER FOR THE ARTS
APPLAUDS ORANGE COUNTY COMMUNITY PARTNERS THROUGHOUT THE
2022-2023 BROADWAY SEASON!

Partners include Grandma’s House of Hope, One Warm Coat, Orange County Food Bank, Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) and Share Our Selves.

Segerstrom Center for the Arts continuously strives to involve Orange County in one harmonious effort to cultivate community and spread goodwill across the area. Inspired to bring the Orange County community together for the 2022-2023 Broadway season, the Center has teamed up with several local nonprofits including Grandma’s House of Hope, One Warm Coat, Orange County Food Bank, Families Forward, Share Our Shelves and Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) by holding collection drives in the lobby of Segerstrom Hall throughout a Broadway show’s run.

This community initiative encourages both theatergoers and Center staff to show their support by donating a small item and it all started with the success of the Hadestown in August 2022.

The Center helped the Orange County charity, Grandma’s House of Hope, to stock the near-empty shelves at their food bank. All patrons were encouraged to donate canned goods to help the nearly twenty percent of children in Orange County living in “food insecure” households. Center staff also participated by having an internal contest to see which department could collect the most canned goods. Collectively, over 2,000 pounds of canned goods were collected.

With the massive success from Hadestown, it inspired the Center to have a second canned food drive hosted for our run of Moulin Rouge! The Musical from November 9 to 27, 2022, this time teaming up with the Orange County Food Bank to stock its shelves with canned food goods for those in-need. The musical’s four values of Truth, Beauty, Freedom, and Love went into practice as staff and patrons donated 3,000 pounds of canned goods surpassing our previous total by 1,000 pounds!

The Center was thrilled to partner with CHOC (Children’s Hospital of Orange County) Foundation to hold a book drive for their Family Resource Center. In the spirit of celebrating one of the great American novels, Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, patrons were encouraged to donate books throughout the run of the play from December 27, 2022 – January 8, 2023. Together we helped CHOC provide 1000 reading and coloring books to patients, parents and siblings knowing how important reading is to children’s well-being and creativity. Rose Ovalle, Patient and Family Experience Program Manager at CHOC shares “We are grateful to Segerstrom Center for the Arts for their donation of 1,000 books. They are a pleasure to work with and their generosity supports our efforts to promote early literacy, making an important impact on young patients at CHOC. We look forward to ongoing collaborations that further enhance the health and well-being of children.”

During our run of Disney’s Frozen from February 1 to 19, 2023, the Center teamed up with One Warm Coat as well as local beneficiary agencies Lighthouse Outreach and Clothing the Homeless charities in OC to host a coat drive. Together we collected 1,350 coats to provide to those in need. For nearly 30 years, One Warm Coat has given the gift of warmth to over 6.6 million children and adults. They believe in the basic right to protection from the cold, for everyone. Mitchell Raff, CEO of Clothing the Homeless shares “I would like to sincerely thank Segerstrom and the staff for the large donation of jackets and coats that were collected during the performance run of Frozen. Your donation of coats to Clothingthehomeless.org helped the homeless we serve in Orange County stay warm through this cold and wet winter.  Your collaboration and staff’s dedication are greatly appreciated and we are honored to be one of the chosen charity’s Segerstrom donated to.  I look forward to working with Segerstrom in the coming years and am grateful for your generosity and compassion for those in need.”

For the performance of Mean Girls from March 7-19, the Center did a school supplies drive with Families Forward. “The entire team at Families Forward thoroughly enjoyed partnering with Segerstrom Center For the Arts to gather essential supplies for the upcoming school year,” said Madelynn Hirneise, CEO of Families Forward. “Receiving six full barrels of classroom basics in just over two weeks was beyond what we expected and we’re confident these necessary items will help alleviate the financial strain a new school year can bring for families in need. We also extend our gratitude for not only the supplies they donated, but the in-kind tickets they gave to our staff and volunteers to see the recent Mean Girls production live – it was an experience they won’t soon forget!”

Throughout the run of Hairspray, April 18-30, the Center had a toiletries drive in support of Share Our Selves, a nationally recognized Heath Center providing high quality, safety net services to the Orange County community and designated as a Healthcare provider for the Homeless.

Lisa Middleton, Vice President of Marketing and Communications for Segerstrom Center for the Arts shares “The Center is delighted to support each and every one of these wonderful local Orange County community organizations and will continue to support local nonprofits throughout the Broadway season. It’s a great way of bringing people together including staff, patrons, and the Orange County community for a common good and the love of the performing arts.”

The Center is ecstatic about the impact made in our community and aims to continue these efforts throughout the rest of the 2022-2023 Broadway season. The upcoming shows SIX and TINA: The Tina Turner Musical also plan to include community partnerships.

Segerstrom Center for the Arts is an innovative, nonprofit arts organization committed to supporting artistic excellence, creating impactful educational programs, and dedicated to engaging a culturally connected, inclusive and vital Orange County community for all, through the power of live performance.
As the leading cultural arts hub, the Center presents a variety of programming with performances by international dance companies, Broadway national tours, jazz and cabaret musicians, chamber orchestras and ensembles, comedy, and speaker series. Through the Education and Community Engagement departments, the Center also delivers family-friendly programming and performances on the Julianne and George Argyros Plaza; these events include outdoor movie screenings, concerts, dance classes, diverse festivals and more.

With six venues on a beautiful multi-disciplinary campus, Segerstrom Center for the Arts proudly serves as the artistic home to three of the region’s major performing arts organizations: Pacific SymphonyPhilharmonic Society of Orange County and Pacific Chorale as well as two independently acclaimed organizations: Tony Award®-winning South Coast Repertory and the Orange County Museum of Art. Segerstrom Center is also home to the American Ballet Theatre William J. Gillespie School and Studio D, Arts School for All Abilities.

Immersive Disney Animation

Following celebrated premieres in 13 cities and rave reviews from critics and audiences across North America, Lighthouse Immersive Studios and Walt Disney Animation Studios have announced that Los Angeles will be the next city to premiere Immersive Disney Animation on June 23, 2023. The Los Angeles iteration of Immersive Disney Animation will be housed in Lighthouse ArtSpace Los Angeles – the same venue that was home to the popular Original Immersive Van Gogh – in the iconic former Amoeba Music Building at 6400 Sunset Blvd.

Tickets for the Los Angeles presentation of Immersive Disney Animation start at $29.99 and go on sale May 12 at 10 a.m. PT at lighthouseimmersive.com/Disney.

The creative team behind Immersive Disney Animation is led by Oscar®-winning producer J. Miles Dale (Best Picture 2018 –The Shape of Water), Special Projects Producer Dorothy McKim (Oscar®-nominated, Get A Horse!), who is spearheading the project for Disney Animation, Lighthouse Immersive’s Global Creative Director David Korins (Tony Award®-nominee for Hamilton, Emmy Award® winner for Grease Live), and Mexico City-based Cocolab.

Immersive Disney Animation was called “jaw-dropping” by Axios, “a peek behind the curtain that you would just never otherwise get” by the Boston Globe, with Elite Daily remarking, “you really feel like you’ve stepped inside your fave film.”

Immersive Disney Animation saw its celebrated world premiere in Toronto in December of 2022. The exhibition is now open in 13 North American cities, including Atlanta, Boston, Cleveland, Columbus, Dallas, Denver, Detroit, Las Vegas, Minneapolis, Nashville and San Antonio and its first intercontinental presentation in Tokyo, with additional cities soon to be announced.

“The rollout of Immersive Disney Animation has been met with overwhelming positivity and tremendous acclaim in the 13 cities we’ve debuted the show so far,” said Disney Animation Special Projects Producer Dorothy McKim. “And we are proud to announce that we will be presenting this spectacular exhibition in the birthplace of Disney Animation, where our studio’s first creations took shape. We can’t imagine a more fitting locale for this celebration of Disney animation, and the incredible artists and animators that bring these worlds to life.”

“Lighthouse ArtSpace Los Angeles has housed one of the most impressive stagings of Immersive Van Gogh for the better part of two years,” said Corey Ross, producer and founder at Lighthouse Immersive Studios. “It is one of the most popular, best-selling venues of the 20+ other Lighthouse ArtSpaces we’ve opened across North America, and Immersive Disney Animation is going to take it to a whole new level.”

Lighthouse ArtSpace Los Angeles is hosting a final slate of showings for Immersive Van Gogh from June 1 – 11 before Immersive Disney Animation takes over as the standalone experience. Tickets are on sale now at vangoghla.com.

Creating iconic animated stories for all ages for nearly a century, Walt Disney Animation Studios has joined forces with North America’s top creator of experiential projection exhibitions (including The Original Immersive Van Gogh) to present the music and artistry within Disney Animation’s canon of films—from hits of today like Encanto, Zootopia and Frozen, to all of the classics including The Lion King, Peter Pan and Pinocchio. Audiences will feel like they’ve entered the incredible worlds of beloved Disney characters and become one with them.

The creative team for the Immersive Disney Animation is led by Oscar®-winning producer J. Miles Dale who said, “As a filmmaker, I am always seeking out ideas that can engage an audience in new and interesting ways, and to show them something that they have never seen before. Using the new technology that the immersive experience offers is exciting, but it’s important that it not interfere with the emotional investment that Disney fans have in the characters and storylines that audiences have come to cherish. This groundbreaking approach that Lighthouse Immersive Studios has created does exactly that by giving the viewer the sensation that they are actively sharing the space with the characters they most love from the Disney Animation library. Most of our guests have seen these films multiple times, but they tell me that they feel as though they are seeing them in an entirely new way, and that was always our goal.”

Mexico City-based Cocolab worked with Dale and the Creative Legacy team at Walt Disney Animation Studios to develop the program for Lighthouse Immersive Studios. Special Projects Producer Dorothy McKim is spearheading the project for Disney Animation. “Having been a part of Disney Animation for over 40 years, I truly consider this one of the great joys within my career, partnering with Lighthouse Immersive to bring our characters, stories and films to audiences in thrilling and new ways,” said McKim. “Watching the joy and delight the show brings to audiences is what dreams are made of.”

Beyond the unparalleled projection design that Lighthouse Immersive is known for, Immersive Disney Animation is further enhanced by expansive environmental design by Lighthouse Immersive’s Global Creative Director David Korins.

Additional interactive features within the projection show include responsive floor projection design that moves with the audience and custom bracelets that light up in sync with the projections and based on the audiences’ movements through the galleries. In a particularly show-stopping moment, the Gazillion Bubbles special effects team fills the 500,000 cubic feet of galleries with bubbles.

Ross captures the excitement both Disney and Lighthouse Immersive feel for the project as he describes how it begins: “Just imagine journeying through Zootopia with Judy Hopps, diving to the ocean floor with Ariel, flying on a magic carpet with Aladdin, and stepping into Casita with Mirabel and the family Madrigal. This is where the Immersive Disney Animation takes you.”

Collaborating with Lighthouse Immersive is the Creative Legacy team of Walt Disney Animation Studios, helping bring their library of films to audiences in a manner never before experienced.
