Mission Viejo-Saddleback Valley Elks Lodge #2444 Newest Members

0

The Mission Viejo-Saddleback Valley Elks Lodge #2444 is proud to welcome its newest members who have taken the oath during a ritual the Organization has been celebrating since its inception in 1868.

Elks Lodges bring so much more to their communities than just a building, golf course or pool. They are places where neighbors come together, families share meals, and children grow up.

Elks invest in their communities through programs that help children grow up healthy and drug-free, by undertaking projects that address their immediate needs, and by honoring the service and sacrifice of our veterans.

Elks are volunteers looking forward to giving back to people less fortunate and lending a helping hand where needed.   Americanism at its finest, every lodge observes June 14th as Flag Day, a tradition which the Elks began in 1907 and was later adopted by Congress as an official observance.

The Mission Viejo-Saddleback Valley Elks Lodge #2444 is celebrating over 52 years of service to Saddleback Valley Communities. It is one of 8 lodges in the Orange Coast District of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks (BPOE) whose headquarters are in Chicago, Illinois. The BPOE is a charitable organization with a 152-year history of giving.  For information regarding Elks programs or Elks membership, call 949 830-3557

Internet Safety isn’t Just for Kids – Why Older Adults Need Safe Surfing Practices Too

By the numbers: The FBI announced that during 2024, there were 147,127 complaints of internet fraud for people 60 years and older, totaling $4.8 billion in losses.

  • In our digital-first world, it’s crucial that Baby Boomers (born between 1946 and 1964) and the Silent generation (born between 1925 and 1945) – which are not digital natives – practice safe habits while online.
  • Inherently, Baby Boomer and Silent generations tend to be more skeptical of online platforms tracking their data.

May is National Older Americans Month, so it’s a good time to revisit helpful tips.

Preventing password breaches

A crucial first step to protecting valuable information online is to password protect your accounts.

  • The equally crucial second step is to ensure that your password is strong enough.
  • Use passwords with seven or more characters that include a number and symbol, like an exclamation point or asterisk.
  • It’s important to vary your passwords across accounts, too.
  • Otherwise, a hacker will have a one-and-done job after they breach a single password.

Use Two-factor authentication

To take the extra step, consider using two-factor authentication when creating your online accounts, which generates a one-time code that is sent to your mobile device or email to confirm your identity.

Don’t take the phishing bait

Another tactic that online hackers use to access your information is to send emails or text messages pretending to be someone else.

  • These messages may look like they are from your boss, a family member, or even someone claiming you have won a contest.
  • They will typically convey a sense of urgency to get their victims to act quickly and respond with personal information like their social security number (SSN) or bank account numbers.
  • If you know how to be cautious of these types of messages, you can prevent you or others from falling for phishing schemes and losing information privacy or money.

Let’s talk about social media.

  • It’s fun to scroll through your feed and post photos or statuses, but you may be giving out more information than you realize.
  • However, do not overshare on social media, which can occur through posting photos or statuses that contain information like your home address or place of work.
  • Fun online quizzes, which are common on Facebook, also pose a potential danger because they may ask you to share your name, gender, birth year, etc.
  • Tap into the online security features available through your internet and technology providers.
  • At Cox Communications, we offer tools to detect and prevent cyber-attacks, blocking unknown connections and scanning for any other network threats before you ever know about them.

The internet is a great place to research, keep up with friends and family, and stay up to date on current events.

  • It’s important to stay safe while surfing the web and to ensure that our loved ones know how to protect themselves, too.
  • And with affordable internet options like ConnectAssist for $30 a month, the power of connectivity is available to those on fixed incomes and/or whom receive at least one government assistance program such as SNAP, Medicaid or a Veterans Pension.

St. Margaret’s Infant Pantry

St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church began our journey by asking ourselves, what needs are not being met in our community and what can we do about it? We connected with other local non-profits and discovered there are multiple systems, such as food banks, in place assisting with food insecurity in our local area.  However, families with infants have other essential needs, specifically formula and diapers, that were not being met. And thus, the Infant Pantry began.

Starting in September 2021, once a month we distribute formula, wipes, diapers and nursing pads. The church relies on local partnerships. Family Assistance Ministries, an Orange County faith-based nonprofit organization, donates diapers each month. Members of Padres Unidos, a St. Margaret’s partner since 2013,  keeps the local Hispanic community informed of the pantry distribution days. And the San Clemente Military Family Outreach, publicizes our schedule on the Camp Pendleton Mom’s Facebook page.

Each month families begin arriving around 8:30 to get in line for our drive through distribution that begins at 9:30. We have 3 stations: Welcome, Formula, and Diapers. Our guests stop at each station to be greeted by one of our volunteers and provided the requested items. Occasionally we have a special item stop as well.  For example, during our December distribution, each family received a Christmas stocking stuffed with various fun items.  190 stocking were stuffed by parishioners, our Sunday school children, and a local Girl Scout Troop.

76% of our families are returning, demonstrating their reliance on our pantry to feed their infants and help make ends meet.  With new families each month, the number of infants served has continued to grow. In the 41 consecutive months of operation, we have provided for 5,747 families with 9,306 infants, averaging 262 infants per month in 2024.  About 30% of our families are from Camp Pendleton, the balance largely from the local Hispanic communities.  Diapers are graciously donated by Family Assistance Ministries.  All other products are purchased from monetary contributions to our Infant Pantry.  100% of all contributions are used to purchase products.

Each month 20 volunteers enjoy several hours together distributing items to our guests.  As one volunteer said, Caring about other people and getting to serve people is a good thing for your heart.”  More importantly, here are some comments from our moms.  “The cost of everything has gone up astronomically; this takes the burden off,” said a Camp Pendleton mom, a regular visitor since the pantry opened. “Being able to come here prevents us from having to choose between groceries and diapers.”  Another mom told us, “I have a ten-month-old baby, and this has been helpful for us. You know, everyone needs extra help at some point in time, so just to have this community is really so nice.”

We welcome all who would like to join us on a distribution Saturday.  Check out the St. Margaret’s website for the Infant Pantry schedule https://stmarg.org/infant-pantry/.
