Paul Williams At Soka

The performance with Paul Williams at Soka Performing Arts Center will be rescheduled to Sunday, April 30th.

Williams is quoted as saying: “While I am most excited about my forthcoming engagement at SokaPAC, unforeseen circumstances make a performance this weekend impossible. Happily, the concert has been moved to April 30th. I look forward to seeing you all then. Blessings and thanks, Paul Williams.”

Paul Williams is one of the most beloved and respected music creators in the world today. Williams is a lyricist and composer who has won an Oscar Award, three Grammy Awards, two Golden Globe Awards, an Ivor Novello International Award and earned induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, Williams’ timeless classics range from “We’ve Only Just Begun”, “You and Me Against the World” and “The Rainbow Connection” to “Touch” and “Beyond” on Daft Punk’s chart-topping Album of the Year, Random Access Memories on which he also performed, receiving a Grammy as Featured Artist.

Williams says of his upcoming performance: “I’m looking forward to returning to Soka. My homebase is behind the Orange curtain … And my music and movie dreams were born just over the county line in Long Beach. This feels like family and that makes it really special for me.”

Paul Williams is set to perform the rescheduled performance at Soka Performing Arts Center for a 3pm show on Sunday, April 30, 2023. The venue address is 1 University Drive, Aliso Viejo, CA 92656. Tickets: https://www.soka.edu/soka-performing-arts-center/calendar-events/music-movies-mayhem-miracles-recovered-life-paul

As President and Chairman of the Board of the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP), Paul Williams is also a leading spokesman for music creators in the digital age. In addition to music creators’ rights, Paul is also passionate about recovery, and works tirelessly to destigmatize alcoholism and addiction. Sober 32 years, his humorous observations of life, love, and creativity, augmented by the education and knowledge he gained through his studies and certification from UCLA as a Certified Drug Rehabilitation Counselor, has been shared in a best-selling book co-written by Tracey Jackson, entitled Gratitude and Trust: Six Affirmations That Will Change Your Life which was featured on Oprah’s Super Soul Sunday.

While publicly lauded for his work as a songwriter, author and actor, most recently for his role with Billy Bob Thornton in Goliath, Paul predicts he’ll be remembered for playing Little Enos in the Smokey and the Bandit trilogy and for his lyrics to “The Love Boat” theme. However, it is the lyrics from Bugsy Malone that aptly sum up his philosophy: “You give a little love and it all comes back to you; You’re gonna’ be remembered for the things that you say and do”. As a devoted husband to writer Mariana Williams and proud father, Paul considers his son Cole, and daughter Sarah, to be his best work.

MV City Council Updates

The City Council on Tuesday approved a cost-sharing plan for much-needed facilities as well as a plan that will ultimately bring sports tourism and revenue from around the globe to Mission Viejo.

As previously reported by the City on January 26 and March 9, the plans and costs that Assistant City Manager Keith Rattay discussed in detail at the January 24 City Council meeting regarding Santa Margarita Water District’s Oso Creek Water Treatment Plant and City Administrative/Storage Building were presented to the Council for consideration of an agreement. In a 4-1 vote, the Council approved the plan that dates to 2021. The City’s original corporate yard was part of the Santa Margarita Water District’s former water treatment plant, which was one of the original plants in Orange County. In 2020, the water district informed the City it would tear down the outdated plant to replace it with a new facility that will treat a higher capacity of water more efficiently with a smaller footprint. Like other municipalities, the corporate yard had been part of the City for decades. Essential to City operations, it’s the base for the City fleet; emergency response purposes; maintenance; and other needs. The agreement the Council approved on Tuesday will cover the construction of the new Corp Yard Administration/Storage building for the City, and the project will include the Administration and Storage Building, a new access road, parking lot and recreational open space easement to support future expansion of the Oso Creek Trail System within the Core of the City.

In addition, the Council unanimously approved Mayor Brian Goodell’s upcoming representation at the Oceania National Olympic Committee’s General Assembly in Brisbane, Australia.  Rick Blas, Executive Director of the Oceania National Committee, which represents 17 countries, was impressed with the City’s Olympic tradition and state-of-the-art facilities for hosting international athletes while visiting Mission Viejo last month and invited the Mayor to take part in committee’s General Assembly. Having delegations of athletes from other countries live and train in Mission Viejo in the years leading up to the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles would result in a boost to the local economy and other numerous benefits, which could make Mission Viejo an even more attractive place to live, visit, and conduct business.

In other Council news, 97-year-old World War II veteran William Simonoff was recognized for his vast efforts by the Council, U.S. Representative Young Kim and Supervisor Don Wagner. The highly decorated U.S. Army Sergeant was honored with the “Medal of Chevalier dans l’Ordre National de la Légion d’Honneur” at the French Consulat.

The City Council normally meets on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month. Residents are encouraged to attend City Council meetings, which are streamed live on the City’s website and air on Cox Channel 30 and AT&T U-Verse Channel 99.  Stay tuned to the City’s social media sites for up-to-date news and information.

OCCF Hosts Online Giving Day

ORANGE COUNTY COMMUNITY FOUNDATION HOSTS

“THE FUTURE IS WORKING” GIVING DAY TO DEVELOP

A STRONGER WORKFORCE FOR ORANGE COUNTY

24-hour fundraiser seeks to raise $300K for nonprofits committed to

retaining a robust economy and vibrant community

On March 23, 2023, the Orange County Community Foundation (OCCF) is hosting The Future is Working, a 24-hour collaborative online giving day to support 17 nonprofits that offer programs and services to remove barriers to employment, create pathways to success for vulnerable communities, and build a flexible and resilient workforce.

While Orange County saw employment return to 98.5% of pre-pandemic levels, jobs in June 2022 were still 25,800 below what they were in Feb. 2020, and the hiring pace in the County still lagged as employment continued to rebound. In California, pandemic job losses fully recovered, but an unstable economy remains amid layoffs and inflation that continues to weigh heavily on residents. Because of economic uncertainty, nonprofits that invest time and resources in the workforce remain crucial to the health and well-being of the community.

The 17 Future is Working nonprofits – focused on vocational training, economic self-sufficiency, entrepreneurship, and mentorship – share the joint mission of helping make the Orange County workforce more adaptable and resilient. These nonprofits continue to ensure that all residents have the opportunity to secure living-wage jobs and withstand the adversity that surrounds the backbone of Orange County’s economy.

“Building pathways to economic opportunity for all our residents is one of the most effective ways to ensure that Orange County continues to thrive,” said Shelley Hoss, president and CEO of the Orange County Community Foundation. “The Future Is Working supports nonprofits working on the frontlines to nurture these opportunities where they are needed most.”

Participating nonprofits include Bracken’s Kitchen Inc.; Chrysalis; CIELO; Goodwill of Orange County; Hart Community Homes, Inc.; High School Inc. Academies Foundation; Hope Builders; Hub for Integration, Reentry & Employment (H.I.R.E.); i-5 Freedom Network; Kherut; Orange County Academy of Sciences and Arts; Oscar & Ma; PROJECT SELF-SUFFICIENCY; Step Forward Academy; Vital Link Education-Business Consortium; Working Wardrobes and Youth Employment Service of the Harbor Area, Inc. (YES) – all leaders in workforce development.

The Future Is Working remains part of OCCF’s iheartOC Collaborative Giving Days, an annual initiative that designates cause-specific giving days focused on critical community issues. The online giving model matches local nonprofits with shared missions – from homelessness and workforce development to preserving ecosystems and supporting youth – to create momentum on one shared day and leverage a combined outreach effort for collective success. Since its start in 2015, OCCF Giving Days have raised over $20 million for 1,254 Orange County nonprofits.

OCCF is recognized as the center of gravity for Orange County philanthropy, acting as an unparalleled resource for local philanthropists and their families for over 30 years. In addition to the organization’s cause-specific giving days, it offers unique insights, deep knowledge, and a diverse array of tools to support both lifetime and legacy giving – making OCCF home to more than 600 charitable funds benefiting a wide range of causes.

Founded in 1989, the Orange County Community Foundation (OCCF) works with donors, strengthens the local nonprofit sector and works to find solutions to community needs. Since its inception, OCCF has awarded more than $930 million in grants and scholarships, placing the organization in the top two percent in grantmaking among U.S. community foundations. LA Theatre Week March 13 to 26

LA Theatre Week Promotes

Affordable Access to Over 75 Productions

New annual event makes the performing arts more accessible in the Los Angeles, Orange County, and Inland Empire areas with tickets as low as $20

March 13 to 26 | visit theatreweek.com/los-angeles

LA Theatre Week, a two-week-long celebration of the performing arts, happens from March 13 to 26. With tickets to more than 75 productions starting at just $20, audiences will be able to experience high-caliber shows at prices that democratize access to the best of LA culture.  For a full list of productions and tickets please visit theatreweek.com/los-angeles.

With the performing arts and live events still struggling to secure pre-pandemic audience attendance, this initiative supports cultivating the next generation of theatregoers by making the arts more accessible. According to a recent survey by ticketing provider Goldstar, only 25% of respondents in the greater Los Angeles area who attended a live event in the past year saw a theatrical performance; 62% cited tickets being too expensive as a reason they might not attend live events. Many consumers don’t realize that a trip to the theatre can cost the same as a trip to the movies, and with over 45 productions priced at $20 and under, there’s truly a dynamic show for everyone, ranging from comedies, to dramas, to musicals, and more.

“Theatre and the performing arts add meaning, purpose, and connection to our lives,” said Katie Junod, General Manager of presenting company Goldstar. “As many of us live more of our lives digitally, we shouldn’t lose sight of the importance of live performing arts as a way to gather with our community.  While Los Angeles is known for its contribution to film, Theatre Week is the perfect vehicle to remind both new and established audiences of what exceptional stage performances exist locally.”

Behind cost, 49% of respondents in the Goldstar survey pointed to commute time as the reason they might not purchase tickets to live events. During LA Theatre Week, no one is far from a great live performance — throughout the campaign, there will be unprecedented access to shows all over Greater Los Angeles. Participating shows and performing arts organizations include musicals such as 1776 (Ahmanson Theatre), Hairspray (Dolby Theatre c/o Broadway in Hollywood, Segerstrom), Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (La Mirada Theatre), Chicago (Segerstrom), the new production of The Secret Garden (Ahmanson Theatre), Spring Awakening (East West Players), and the World Premiere of A Transparent Musical (Mark Taper Forum). A wide variety of plays — both classic and new — are on offer, including Manuel Puig’s Kiss of the Spider Woman (A Noise Within), Anna Deavere Smith’s Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992 (Mark Taper Forum), Coleman ’72 (South Coast Rep), and Stew (Pasadena Playhouse).
